Toshiba to Launch 2160p TV with Built-in BD and Cell Processor

Toshiba has confirmed that they are close to launching its flagship LED TV, which will uniquely include the 64-bit Cell processor used in Sony's PS3. The "Cell Regza" will have a panel resolution of 3840x2160 pixels. It will include a Blu-ray player and a 1TB recorder. Toshiba has confirmed that the Cell Regza will be on display at the CES show in January 2010.

Masaaki Oosumi, president of Toshiba's Digital Media Network Company, said that this new TV "brings together Toshiba imaging, storage and network technologies". He added, "it will be Toshiba's flagship model in the true sense. It is the ultimate entertainment machine that brings more excitement than a movie in a theatre. I would like to let users experience the same sensation as they felt by watching a color TV for the first time."

Toshiba will announce the specifications of the Cell TV within days, Oosumi said. It will be first available in Japan in December 2009. As for the pricing, he just said that it will be "fairly expensive".

Cool, sure. Major overkill? Definitely.

2160?  What the FUCK does anybody need with a 2160p TV?  Hell, what does anyone need with a 1080p?

Why do people always have to build some new piece of electronic gear to be a status symbol?  *sigh*

It's mostly for people who have huge projectors. The technology I mean. It's still overkill though.

Our games dont even fucking support 1080p in true form, its all 720 upscaled...BR movies do, but thats it, and I honestly dont care much about the difference. What is the need for something that fucking high? Nothing will support it for years. Everyone just thinks stepping it up constantly, even before there is the least bit of reason to is somehow relevant.

Well, maybe it will get the idiots who buy HDTVs and just think automatically everything is HD all of the sudden to buy it..but anyone else, what a huge waste.

Because the numbers are bigger then the ones we have now, and every body knows the length of their penis is proportionate to the number on their TV's.

BlueRay isn't 2160p...

So, either they re-release everything AGAIN, or people with this thing are shit-out-of-luck.

Whatever, just wait 5 years and this will be a few hundred dollars at Best Buy. Nothing stays cutting edge, ever.

I play on an HD projector, so 1080p is lovely. I can't imagine what 2160 looks like though. It will be interesting to see how this plays out!

Sounds great.  I'm fine with my LCD now.  But I like hearing about this progression.  Cool to think about where we will be in 10 years.

When my grandfather was a kid, seeing a car was a rare and big thing.  By the time he passed away, they were everywhere.  I wonder what sorts of things will be everywhere, by the time we get old.

It's kind of ironic how Toshiba created HD, too.

That's awesome! I was excited when I found out my screen on my Alienware laptop has a 1200p resolution. I didn't know they went past 1080p until then.

What? I'm just getting used to 1080p and they're already pushing it again? I don't want to buy a new TV...

Well, 1080p makes a big difference with blu-ray. 2160p is just stupid though, as don't have any technology that displays at that high of a resolution. I can see this as a prototype for the future, but this shouldn't really go on sale yet...

So, what's more vital to the future of general populace TV?  Television sets with 3D or 2160 p HD?  Chances are that there will be some sort of combination in out living rooms a decade from now.

So, what's the processor actually useful for in a tv like this? If it uses some funky technological shit to add post-processing AA/AF or whatever to SD content (and ED/HDcontent below what it supports I guess), it may be worthwhile. And lol @ all the raging, maybe some of you can now understand why other people aren't phased with the current "HD" craze.

If you have equitment (and the cash) you can run PC games up that high. Though I think it requires 2 Video Outputs on beefy card, though I havent really looked into it myself (im still on a 4:3 1280x1024 screen lol).

Well, nobody needs it.  In fact, your candyass doesnt really need to be on this site right now, replying to topics.  Its all relative.  You should look at it as yes, people will use it as a status symbol but a silly one because there is no 2160p content out there, for the masses anyway. If you can aford the TV, I sure you can have a special order of a movie made in 2160p.
So I say, calm the fuck down.  Just because you use glasses and cant appreciate the beauty of 1080p, that doesnt mean that others cant.  I wonder why you are on this site, if you are even a gamer, because being able to put visual limits is just one of the things we here at Giant Bomb appreciate.

Talk about future proofing. Things be crazy!

I cant imagine that a resolution much above 1080p will ever be much use...generally anyway.

It seems inconcievable that games developers would bother running a game at a much higher res. - simply because of the taxing nature it has on system resources.

Id rather play a game that looks 3 times as good as crysis (PS4, xbox720) at 1080p than play....well, crysis, at 2160p.

Just me though. And maybe it wont work like that. Who knows.

Whether useful or not.. I think this sets a good precedent for what we're going to see in the coming years.
