You know what's cool? The x, circle, square and triangle buttons. Do you know what's cool about them? The fact that aside from some minor tweaks generation to generation they're essentially in the same position on the PS4 controller as they were on the PS1 controller.
I've come to realize that the biggest annoyance for me with Nintendo and their hardware is the lack of any sort of standardization. When I pick up a Playstation or Xbox controller, I don't think about the thing I'm holding at all. The thing I'm using to interact with the game is so comfortable and familiar that I get drawn into the game. Nintendo on the other hand has an awkward and massively different controller for every generation of its console. Starting with the N64s God awful controller, then the more standard but awkward GameCube with its little C-stick nub, to the gimmicky Wii to the giant ugly slab that was the Wii U tablet. None of these controllers were ever comfortable and I always had to think about the way I was holding them which drew me out of the experience. It also didn't help that the Xbox and Nintendo consoles use the same face buttons configured differently.
In fact the only Nintendo things I have always been a fan of is their handhelds. Even though the DS had its own control gimmick, the way the device felt in my hand was still essentially what all their handhelds felt like, and that familiarity made it a more pleasant experience.
I guess it also doesn't help that I have little to no love for Mario and all the games he's been a part of. The only one I didn't actively dislike was 3D World and even then some of the archaic choices in that games design still turned me off. I don't understand why the games still have timers for example, or lives. It's just a hold over from game design long past and makes the games significantly less enjoyable.
If it wasn't for the fact that I adore Zelda, Pokémon, and Professor Layton I probably would never even consider picking up any Nintendo Consoles. I mean I bought a Wii U day one and I've only purchased a grand total of 4 games for it and have maybe spent a total of 20 hours playing the thing... it's essentially my HD Zelda machine. So I guess I'm thankful BOTW is coming out on Wii U because I don't think Nintendo will really ever learn from their mistakes.
Sorry for the long post, but I kinda wanted to sort out my own thoughts on the Switch as well.
