IGN Says I Should Play These!

So, IGN is crazy. Like, really crazy. That, or they're corporate. Really corporate. But they also subject themselves to worldwide derision on a regular basis by releasing "Top" lists all the time, so they must be a little crazy. Their lists are always a perfectly acceptable collection of intellectual property, just seriously misplaced in terms of the order. The two possible exceptions are the "Top 25 Sci-Fi TV Series" and the "Top 100 Comic Book Villains," but that's also not really what they're known for, which is even crazier.

Still, even if the orders are completely crazy, the games they recommend are generally good. Here's a list of the ones I still haven't played off their Top 100 Modern Games list and their Top 25 Wii Games list. (I wonder what VGK and Claude think of the Wii games?)

List items

  • #98 on their Top 100 Modern Games list is a completely absurd sounding game. I only remember what it is by name because it has the incredibly strange-looking Mount Caravella. It certainly looks interesting, and I had never realized it was an IOS game till writing this, so I'll probably pick it up.

UPDATE: I've played my first two sessions and enjoyed them quite a bit. There's obviously far more to play, but I'm enjoying it so far. Aesthetically very charming.

  • #97 on their Top 100 Modern Games list. I hated Resistance 1, unfortunately, so there's not even a chance I'm going to play this game unless I'm going to literally play every other game first.

  • #95 on their Top 100 Modern Games list, and #21 on their Top 25 Wii Games list. I actually have tried it on a rental, and I really enjoyed it. I'd love to beat it on another rental sometime.

  • #94 on their Top 100 Modern Games list. I think Crysis 2 is kind of okay? I'll probably pick this up during a Steam sale at some point, assuming Crysis hasn't been made an Origin exclusive.

  • #92 on their Top 100 Modern Games list. Far too tactical for my taste, as I'm absolutely terrible at tactics and strategy games.

  • #91 on their Top 100 Modern Games list, and man do I wish this could be in a Steam sale. Unfortunately, I feel little drive to play this when I got sick of The Sims and The Sims 2 the moment I actually tried to play them as real games. I feel like Animal Crossing just does it better.

  • #90 on their Top 100 Modern Games list. No chance I won't play this before Far Cry 3 releases.

UPDATE: I didn't finish Far Cry 2, but I played enough to get the idea. I enjoyed my time with it! But it's a bit too aimless, a problem that Far Cry 3 definitely attempted to solve.

  • #88 on their Top 100 Modern Games list. Man, I hate the PSP. I really hate the PSP. Here's hoping this gets a PS3 HD rerelease MGS Peace Walker-style.

  • #87 on their Top 100 Modern Games list, and I've actually tried this one! Only about twenty minutes, and that is a beautiful and fun shooter. No multiplayer, though, and I won't feel shame in playing KZ3 multiplayer instead.

  • #86 on their Top 100 Modern Games list, and I'll wait until I actually finish Symphony of the Night before I even consider it.

  • #85 on their Top 100 Modern Games list, and I've played the demo enough times to know I don't especially like this game. The co-op levels might get better later on, but the demo did NOT sell me.

  • #81 on their Top 100 Modern Games list, and I totally have the XBLA version and will start that up soon!

  • #79 on their Top 100 Modern Games list, and I totally have the Steam version! I'll try it out sooner rather than later, but there's no rush for me.

  • #77 on their Top 100 Modern Games list, and I have it on Steam. First play is imminent.

UPDATE: I'm too bad at strategy games to play this one right now.

  • #75 on their Top 100 Modern Games list, and I've totally started this game on Steam. I'm about twenty minutes to a half hour in, and I love it, but I just haven't sat down to play since booting it up to look at the graphics.

UPDATE: I played through the first act and have many strong feelings about this game. It's excellent, but I hate it.

  • #74 on their Top 100 Modern Games list, and I find it disgusting this game is higher than The Witcher 2, Tiny Wings, Angry Birds, Kirby, 'Splosion Man, and many, many more, but I've never owned it myself so I can't say I've really given it a fair shake.

  • #73 on their Top 100 Modern Games list.

Damn me for not playing Flower. I wanted to play it from its release, but I never did. Damn me to hell.

  • #72 on their Top 100 Modern Games list. I used to be pretty derisive about this game. Now I'm addicted to the Persona games. MUST PLAY.

  • #70 on their Top 100 Modern Games list, and I have to ask, is this game better if you're playing with a fully-populated friends leaderboard? If so, I need to beef up my PSN friends list first, as I think maybe 3 people are on it. (I don't play PS3 games online.)

  • #69 on their Top 100 Modern Games list. I get that this is just a better version of the previous one, but I own a copy of the first game to go with my Banjo Kazooie N&B, so I think I'll just play that.

  • #67 on their Top 100 Modern Games list, and #5(!) on their Top 25 Wii Games list. I played a bit of it in the same rental as Kirby. My brother is a poor co-op partner, and I may pick this up as a roommate co-op experience. I love the art in this game, though. LOVE IT.

  • #66 on their Top 100 Modern Games list. I'm imagining Jeff is right and Picross 3D is even better, right?

  • #65 on their Top 100 Modern Games list. Won't be coming here until I at least beat Megaman 1 and 2, and nothing in their post on the game says I should do otherwise.

  • #60 on their Top 100 Modern Games list, and it felt good to skip four games! My roommate has a copy on Steam, so I'll play it there.

  • #59 on their Top 100 Modern Games list, and I think I'll pick it up on iOS as that seems optimal.

  • #58 on their Top 100 Modern Games list, and (bizarrely) #25 on their Top 25 Wii Games list. I wish they'd given us another good reason to get WiiMotion Plus, but at the same time, I wanna play Skyward Sword this holiday and I need new Wiimotes!

  • #53 on their Top 100 Modern Games list, but unfortunately I've already played Curious Village and have done literally one puzzle of Diabolical Box. It sounds like this one has a better story than the other two, but I love the puzzles, so I'm gonna play DBox first.

  • #51 on their Top 100 Modern Games list, and it seems bizarre this is allowed on the same list as Dawn of War II. Dunno if my roommate has this, but if he does, I'll play it.

  • #50 on their Top 100 Modern Games list, and I did not particularly enjoy the short time I spent with it. I couldn't get an online match to start last December, and the single player was DULL.

  • #49 on their Top 100 Modern Games list, and I've played the first one pretty extensively, but I'll grab the second game eventually.

What, you wanted to know if I enjoyed the first one or something? Are you brain dead?

  • #45 on their Top 100 Modern Games list, and #12 on their Top 25 Wii Games list, clearly illustrating that there's no correlation between the two. I played about a half hour with the kids I work with, and I don't find anything about it particularly "mind-blowing." I absolutely ADORE the original, though.

  • #42 on their Top 100 Modern Games list. I extremely dislike WoW. I think it's some of the sorriest gameplay I've ever seen. If Cataclysm were free to play, I'd try it, but I think WoW is just pure rubbish. Still, I respect Cataclysm for completely shaking up a world they'd established as super-profitable for six years.

  • #38 on their Top 100 Modern Games list, and I'm happy to regularly be skipping multiple games at this point on the list. I really love what I played of Child of Eden, so applying Mizuguchi's aesthetic stylings to a game with potentially infinite replay value sounds amazing.

  • #37 on their Top 100 Modern Games list, and I'm seriously looking forward to the PSN HD remake. Also, I hated MGS4, mostly because I took MGS3 very seriously and most of MGS4 was poop jokes and crazy Japanese weirdness ending with the expectation that I still somehow felt emotionally attached to the inhuman and grating characters.

  • #34 on their Top 100 Modern Games list, and I really enjoyed the previous game. Haven't picked up LBP2 yet, partially because I keep forgetting it's a game.

UPDATE: Played it, enjoyed it, but still can't get into the user-content side of LBP.

  • #33 on their Top 100 Modern Games list, and I've not played the 2K take on NBA. I've always enjoyed arcade-y basketball games, but I've never played a sim basketball game, so I can't say if I'd enjoy it or not. I'm sure I'll find out at college, though...

  • #28 on their Top 100 Modern Games list, and I'd like to play Forza 3 before Forza 4 releases. I've never played a sim racer, either, but I love me some arcade racer (NFS and Burnout especially.)

  • #22 on their Top 100 Modern Games list. I've played extensive amounts of the co-op and the multiplayer of Gears 2, and I've played a little of the Gears 1 multiplayer and co-op. The level design seems at least a little broken, so I'm not a huge fan of this first one. The inclusion of this game over the second one seems like an oversight.

  • #21 on their Top 100 Modern Games list, and to be fair, I've played a lot of the campaign, but I have yet to play a multiplayer match because I'M AWFUL AT STARCRAFT. No, seriously. I lost to the easiest setting computer. Twice. I'm AWFUL.

  • #18 on their Top 100 Modern Games list, and I understand why this is on here, but having played so much Fallout 3, I don't think I can ever really play Oblivion.

UPDATE: I spent some time in Oblivion! And, yeah, I definitely don't like it as much as Fallout 3 or Skyrim.

  • #16 on their Top 100 Modern Games list, and the moment I find a copy for less than $30, I'm snapping this up.

UPDATE: I've played it! Mostly awesome, but the ending is NONSENSE.

  • #11 on their Top 100 Modern Games list, and I find it crazy that I have a copy and have never put it in my Xbox. With that, I close out their Modern Games list, having played every game in their Top 10!

  • #23 on their Top 25 Wii Games list. Always been interested, but apparently a used copy at Gamestop still runs $20, so it'll be a long time before I play it.

  • #22 on their Top 25 Wii Games list, and my instant thoughts are both to be derisive and of Shin Megami Tensei.

  • #19 on their Top 25 Wii Games list. No, I haven't played the Wii version of Okami, but ports don't count. Also, fuck Okami.

  • #18 on their Top 25 Wii Games list. Just witnessed the in-game art in this game, and it's gorgeous! Now way more interested.

  • #17 on their Top 25 Wii Games list, and I think I'll play this out of an obligation to the fact that I've never played the NES game.

  • #16 on their Top 25 Wii Games list. I've played the DS version and it's a waste of money. The Wii version looks way more promising.

  • #15 on their Top 25 Wii Games list. The first game is classic trash, but the sequel looked cool. Too bad it requires Motion Plus...now I have to wait a lot longer to pick it up.

  • #13 on their Top 25 Wii Games list. Kind of disappointed I never tried this, though I've never been a huge "loot-hunter."

  • #11 on their Top 25 Wii Games list. I'm still two bosses into the first game two years later. I get an urge to play it once every nine months or so, and then I play through one boss and stop.

  • #9 on their Top 25 Wii Games list. Totally intend to pick this up sooner or later. And with that, I close out on their Top 25 Wii Games list! Sad that Fragile Dreams and Deadly Creatures aren't on this list.

(and no, I haven't played RE4 Wii, but it's no longer the definitive version with the Xbox 360 version coming out so soon.)
