This is definitely Kessen (PS2) for me. I never had a gaming PC until my late twenties, so being able to zoom in and see individual soldiers fighting (poorly) was so cool for me.
There was also this really neat customization system wherein you could choose from many commanders before each battle, each with their own number of troops, weapons, and special maneuvers.
Finally, it has my favorite feature from any RTS I've ever played: every time you issue an order to a unit, they cut to the commanding officer, who would then choose to either follow the order or refuse it. It was very theatrical and so fun.
I miss that game.
