Had to look up that Genghis Khan one.  Seems that he actually only had 4 sons and because they had his name, his decendants would be more appealing so the lineage would spread.  Apparently it is true, .5% of the world's men are related to him though.  Just not sure about how many chicks he got with.    But he was so badass enough that having his name or being descended from him was enough to get you laid.
