An 8th Generation Ordeal.

No Caption Provided

Today I went to a Jb Hifi with the intention of getting an Xbox One. I walked out with a better deal than I expected. The salesman threw in an extra game on top of what the bundle had in it already, and gave me a 3 month gold card for free too. I was pretty happy about all of this. I'd ended up spending less money than I'd anticipated.

I booted up the console, downloaded the update, set up my xbox profile and live account, and put in a game disc. Instead of it taking me into the install process it greeted me with a message requesting that I put in an Xbox one game disc, blu ray movie, dvd or music cd (0x80820002). So I tried ejecting and reinserting a few times with both game discs (the forza 5 was a download voucher), with no success. I tried a hard restart, and factory reset. Nothing worked. Though, the weird thing is that both blu ray movies and dvd discs worked. Just not any of the games I'd bought with the system. None of them had any marks or scratches on them (one of them was shrink wrapped due to a lot of stock so it was new and untampered with), but no. Nothing.

I took the machine back to the store and got a replacement and went through the exact same process with the same result. Really stressed out by this time I went back and ended up paying a little bit more for this:

I'm sure that there are probably plenty of working Xbox ones out there and I just got twice unlucky. But honestly, by that 2nd time I'd become quite poisoned against the idea of trying a third time. Still a bit disappointed because I was looking forward to sunset overdrive, and I really like the dead rising series... but it seems it wasn't to be. Hopefully this was an isolated incident and other people out there are having a great time with their xbox ones.

that's always something that gets me when people swear off a particular brand, especially with hard drive manufacturers. it just strikes me as sort of weird when someone swears off a brand and says it's the worst when they just get one fail with them; i.e. maxtor. but on the other hand, i can sort of see how one time is enough. i sort of feel for the manufacturers being kept up to such a high standard; even if they get one failure in a thousand or ten thousand, etc. it's still enough to mar their image.

Yeah. Please don't take this as me swearing off of the brand as such. I'd just had enough for the time being. Being temporarily soured by a frustrating experience is normal and human. I'm not going to suddenly bad mouth the xbox and say that its an unreliable system just because I had a bad experience. Because statistically that is ridiculous. Also that would be kinda childish of me.

Looking at the most recent video game console generations, there is a good chance that both your PS4 and Xbox One will die before their generation is over.

Maybe that store received a bad batch. Afaik there are no serious (widespread) technical issues with either console so far (e.g. RRoD for the Xbox 360 or YLoD for the PS3)

Two in a row is some really shitty luck. This generation of consoles seems a lot more stable than the previous. I doubt there's a single working, first-line production Xbox 360 in existence. I know some people who went through a half dozen of them.

its more understandable with 'parity products' when you can avoid Maxtor and get a Western Digital or Sandisk that performs the exact same function. Consoles are unique in that they are the only product you can buy, where nobody else can just make the same thing and sell it. Panasonic can't make something that plays PS4 games, for example.

Things like this worry me a bit, considering how it won't be long before 360 and PS3 production are discontinued. It's no surprise that it's gonna take years before working emulators for these platforms pop up. And that's not even accounting for how long it will be before the standard PC can run those emulators well as well as major emulation quirks that specific titles might have; hell, existing PS2 emulators still cannot emulate games 100% well without proper tweaks and plugins. And I'm not even aware if a working XBOX emulator exists (I want to play some goddamn Breakdown!). I worry that one day my 360 and PS3 will bite the dust and there will be no way to play any of the console exclusive games I own for them. Sure, HD remasters for some games are guaranteed for future platforms, but I don't see anyone remastering something like Nier or even Valkyria Chronicles.

@ripelivejam: My brother will never buy an HTC phone again regardless of new information due to his experience with the HTC Sensation during HTC's darker years. He's not technologically illiterate or anything and keeps up with tech news, but he was so soured that he doesn't care what they put out anymore.

Did you start to question yourself when the second one was broken too? For me, one being broken and I'd probably chalk it up to bad console luck, which I've definitely had before (hello 5 Xbox 360s), but twice in a row and I probably would've been really worried I was just being an idiot and doing something wrong. I completely understand the switch in platform at that point, too. Currently I plan on buying a PS4 before an Xbox One, but if I had two break on me in a row immediately out of the box, I'd be hopping the ship to the Xbox One and getting a PS4 at a hardware revision.
