Extremely surprised that Dan, of all people, is ranking Outer Wilds at 1. I’m a sucker for that sort of experience and even I have really struggled to get to grips with it (I need to give it more of a shot though). Glad you enjoyed it Dan, and good list!
It’s really nice to hear Jeff speak about this vulnerable and amazing time in his life. Congratulations to you both, Jeff, and all the best. You’ll do great!
Jesus, it was a mistake to look at these comments.
Look, is it my list? No, not really. I think PUBG is grossly overrated and Dream Daddy didn't hit me like I wanted it to. However, it was pretty clear from the opinion of the staff this year, not to mention the constant "we need to have a discussion about PUBG being eligible" that it was going to win.
As for Dream Daddy, this is just another example in a very long list of examples where someone who brings empassioned arguments for games they truly loved and want recognised get that recognition. Abby's arguments may not have been as fully-formed as Austin's for Invisible Inc. (loved the "that dude did a lot of school" comment) but she demonstrated clearly that she had a passion for that game that the others just didn't have for games like AC:O. While AC:O would've won that fight by committee, if you have four people saying "it's good I like it" and one person saying "This game is important, I am passionate about it", then in my mind that wins that debate. I respect the gang for being honest enough to say "I'm not as passionate about X as you are about Y, so let's put Y on there".
I want to believe the community is better than simply having this issue because Dream Daddy is the sort of game it is, but I dunno, y'all. You can like another game better but maybe consider why it is you're so willing to write it off.
Zelda was the real GOTY.
Edit: Oh and Abby killed it. She did repeat herself a lot but with regards to Cuphead it's because no one said "that's not happening" sooner, I think. She could've read the room a bit better perhaps but she stopped once they shut it down for good. Don't forget there was a lot of pushing for Nier and Zelda to move up too. Y'all are suspiciouslly singularly focused.
Pretty surprised, I was sure Dan said that PUBG would end up being his GOTY this year when talking to Austin on a livestream. Excellent list though, hit a lot of the same games I've loved this year.
