marchismo: Best of 2010

List items

  • More silly than sexy, Bayonetta takes all the craziest elements of video games, puts them on a motorcycle, sends that motorcycle straight up the side of a space rocket, and then launches it into the sun. If that's not worth a million gigatons, I don't know what is.

  • I was initially skeptical that there would be enough to improve upon over 2007's stellar CE. Not only was I happy to be proven wrong, I can't really see myself going back to CE after playing CEDX. Pac-Man's still got it-- even in 2010.

  • More like GotY 2005, amirite? Seriously though, I bought this game at the suggestion of a friend thinking it was going to be totally awful and good for a laugh or two. Well, not only did it deliver more than a few laughs, it ended up being way better than anything I expected it to be. I was totally blown away by how good the story, setting, and characters were-- I just wish I could say the same about the actual game bits. Granted, I didn't think the gameplay was completely terrible-- it felt like a serviceable Resident Evil clone-- but it was weighed down by a lot of gimmicks and sections that were either twice as long as they needed to be or should've been omitted completely (the forest trail, the stair chase, and anything involving Willie just to name a few). And of course, the map that felt like it was designed by the same people who made the SNES game Brandish. Fun fact: if you look closely enough, you can see a functioning GPS inside York's car. Maybe Zach doesn't trust it for some reason?

  • Sure, it's barely a game and the plot has holes big enough to hide bodies. But I'd be lying if I said I wasn't engrossed during the two bedridden days I spent playing this game.

  • What do you get when you fuse modern game design with concepts from old Shin Megami Tensei games? Hint: it's not a totally sweet Morax that can reflect everything.

  • I came for the hilarious glitches, and stayed for the well-realized western setting and characters.

  • No, I didn't make this #7 just to be funny. While the game suffers a bit from a by-the-numbers JRPG story and a somewhat mediocre soundtrack (by Ys standards), it more than makes up for it with really tight controls and challenging (but fair) boss encounters.

  • While it inevitably fails to make the same impact as its immediate predecessor, MM10 brings enough variety and increased accessability to prevent it from falling into the same trap as the later NES installments.

  • I had a blast playing this, and so would anyone else who doesn't hate Yoshi or gets creeped out by fat talking purple things. Just make sure you find all the coins for Mr. Chimp or he will totally murder you.

  • Clever level design and just the right amount of challenge, provided you don't try to blow through the game in one day. This game would've been a few spots higher on the list if you could use the 1 button to roll instead of shaking the damn Wii remote.

You only have three Western-developed games on this list. What did yo momma make you eat that made your taste so bad?
