When I received my first Playstation around 1998 it came with a Square Enix demo disc with Final Fantasy 7, Bushido Blade, Brave Fencer Musashi, and some other titles.
It was at that moment that I was able to behold the power of Playstation, and I became hooked on demo discs.
Did it look like this?
If so, Squaresoft originally made that for PlayStation Underground. It was the second disc of the second issue. It was the only time in the history of Underground that someone else made one of the discs included. A lot of retailers included the second issue of Underground as a pre-order bonus for FF7 since it had the demo and a lengthy interview with Sakaguchi on disc 1.
I didn't bring them this issue primarily because I didn't think a disc full of RPG stuff would go over too well with Dan and Drew. Also, I didn't want to bring them a huge stack of stuff at PAX, so I picked my 3 favorites.
I was kind of hoping to see 1996 era Maggle in this PS Underground disc, but the disc's intro, credits and cool boarders cutscene made up for more than that. So happy there's a new demo derby!
As the title indicates, this is the premiere issue of PlayStation Underground from April 1997. People generally got this in the mail only if they registered their PlayStation with Sony, which back then meant filling out a post card that came in the box and mailing it back. Why I felt compelled to do that in 1995, I'll never know. But, if I hadn't, I would not have got this, made a fan site about it, randomly met the producer in an AOL chat room, and been invited to E3 1997. It's kinda crazy to think about how different things may have been for me if I hadn't sent in that post card.
Anyway, Underground means a lot to me, so I'm glad I could contribute to Demo Derby in some small way.
