" Oh man. loving this thread. All the non-english people just cant seem to fathom that in England (with alot of the working class atleast), you can say pretty much anything you want, no matter how racist or crude it is, aslong as you are just joking about and not taking it seriously (and as long as your boss dosnt overhear, because even though he would laugh if he heard it out of work, rules in the workplace means hes not allowed to :/ ). Alot of the european people i work with have adjusted to this way of life over here aswell, they dont care if we rip into their country and people. What they said is nothing compared to the kind of conversations ive been in with friends, when i was in college and now in work, it just usually isnt on TV because the middle classes get touchy. But getting on the nerves of the touchy people is exactly what Clarkson and alot of other comedians/satirists like to do. Its funny to watch them squirm. "
So what you're saying is that it's okay to be racist in England? Cause I have never gotten that impression, I thought the majority of people over there were thoughtful and understanding of why certain words can be construed as more than 'just for the lulz'.
" what!?! people making fun of another race? o my god no!!!! dude isnt this what comedians of all races do all the time. so you get pissed when black people make fun of white people or any other combo of race right? I laughed at that video so that means i hate mexicans right?? "
No, the difference between these racists and comedians is vast. This was an unprovoked diatribe on how lazy and smelly mexicans are. It's not funny and it's offensive. Comedians carefully craft a routine in order to get audience reactions, if a comedian said 'Mexican cars would be lazy and smell bad!' they'd be booed off stage.
" Its just a joke. You can't make fun of anything unless its about a white person I guess. If we continue to supress ourselves its only going to explode and cause much more trouble. For example they had an episode where they went up agaisnt the German Top Gear in Belgium which they quote as being "a country that exists so that Germany and Britain can work out their differences". The whole episode was just friendly very unserious competition between the two teams. Its far from being a hateful racist show. Top gear is hilarious, informative, and realizes that if we can all just have a laugh at ourselves things would be much better. "
It can be hilarious and informative while still being completely racist. They aren't having a laugh at themselves, they're having a laugh at the expense of a nation of hardworking people who probably don't appreciate the latent racism that seems to lurk in not only the hosts but the studio audience.
" If you're not willing to walk your dog every day, you shouldn't get a dog. Personally I've always wanted an Irish Wolfhound though. That's what I would get, although I'm allergic to dogs, so that's a no-go. They're quite low-maintenance too. "
