An unordered list of the best games I have played

List items

  • One of my favourite GBA games, still one of the best RPG battle systems.

  • and all associated episodes. It's still one of the best singleplayer first person shooters ever made.

  • The other reason I failed my audio engineering course in 2010.

  • I love the whole trilogy, including 3, but this will always stand out to me as the best entry in the series. Shame they never made a 4th game.

  • This is the game got me to stop dismissing turn-based RPGs. I grew to love them eventually, but giving me an element of direct control and skill during combat was the gateway to a whole genre for me.

  • Some of the best high fantasy storytelling in games.

  • My favourite of the Mario RPGs. With great writing and clever mechanics, its the Mario RPG I would recommend the most to anyone new to the series.

  • One of the reasons why I failed my audio engineering course in 2010.

  • It's Spelunky, come on.

  • Probably my actual favourite GBA game. To me, every subsequent entry in this series has been a disappointment.

  • This is the kind of storytelling that only a video game could manage, and its one of the few games to make me cry like a baby.

  • This game rekindled my love for open world games by focusing on what they do best: exploration. The dungeons are weak and the story remains bland, but I hadn't been as excited to discover the world of a game since Skyrim on launch weekend, but here I could actually see myself returning again.

  • I played this for the first time, along with the rest of the series, in 2018 and of all of them this was the only one I came away completely enraptured by. I know people take issue with the Survival Viewer and the regular upkeep to Snake's health, but playing carefully and patiently, these things never became a major problem. It's easily the best stealth game of the series with the best boss fights to boot. There really isn't a lot I don't like about this game, and I can't really say the same about the other games in the series.

  • Probably the game I most commonly call my all time favourite. The writing is sharp and funny, the platforming is imperfect but has a lot of really neat ideas, but the absolute best thing about this game is the multitude of incredible, inventive and uniquely themed levels. It's hard to pick my absolute favourite, probably The Milkman Conspiracy or Lungfishopolis, but all most all of them have something smart and interesting about them.

  • This game defined my gaming life in Highschool, and will always hold a special place in my heart.
