GOTY 2011

One of the greatest years in video games and certainly a great one for me. Hear is my top 10 games of the year. *please note that this list was created and completed in Nov. '14*

List items

  • Considering Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion is most likely my favorite game of all time its no surprise that the next installment in the series ranks as this years number 1. It improves in a lot of areas and creates a world that is vast and seems actually lived in. Pouring hundreds of hours into this game is extremely rewarding and overall just fun.

  • This games ability to be insane and fun at all times is why its so high on my list. There are so many moments that had me laughing out loud or thinking holy crap this is awesome. A must play in my opinion.

  • So Batman is a mainstay in my life and one of my favorite characters, worlds or things period. This game builds of the success of Arkham Asylum and delivers a great story and world that comic book fans can explore in awe. One of a few games on my list that could easily be number one had it come out in any other year.

  • Hey what do you know, a sequel. Portal 2, like many of Valve's releases, became one of my most anticipated games before its release. I can still remember how this game took over my brain while I was playing it. I got this game for my birthday in April. I remember being stuck of a puzzle before having to leave for my birthday dinner with family. I found myself running through the scenario in my head throughout the dinner and wanting nothing more than to go back home and try my new ideas. Sure enough the hour or so away from the puzzle was enough for me to work out what I was missing and I was able to solve it almost immediately. Oh and that ending!

  • Even though this game only ranks in at number 5 I have probably played this game more than any on the list outside of Skyrim. Its many updates after the fact are also a reason I am still playing it at the time of this list (late 2014).

  • The art style in this game is at times down right disgusting and disturbing which I find to fit very well and work unlike I would have expected or really have seen anyone else even attempt. Above its sometimes blasphemous story telling and weird poop imagery its fun and addicting. I found myself playing it through multiple times in a row hoping to unlock new items from a staggering long list and often fought the urge to have a FAQ open to try and figure out what everything did. This game is perfect amounts challenging and punishing while remaining fun and I found myself always wanting to explore and push on no matter how strong or weak my current character build was.

  • Earlier versions of Call of Duty have ranked higher on my personal list than this one and that is for one specific reason, the single player campaign. MW 3 to me seemed like set piece after set piece in a Michael Bay break neck speed with no real slowing down. For someone that makes sure to play the story to completion before jumping online or trying out any other modes I found myself disappointed by it. The online multiplayer is still fun and I even enjoyed the wave based mode quite a bit.

  • I have been a fan of the Forza series since the first installment. This game went way over the top with DLC which put me off quite a bit. I would like to think that preordering a game and paying my hard earned money would get me all of the content for at least the beginning time of the games release. Its my opinion that certain cars were held back as simple a greedy cash grab that would have simple either been included in a game that didn't have to option of offering content that wasn't "available" at launch. That being said this game looks and plays great.

  • The moment I heard about this game I was in. Having put countless hours and basically complete summers into the early SNES and arcade versions of NBA Jam I knew I would like this game. I was not disappointed. It adds a lot onto the classic game while still staying very true to its roots. I would gladly put money into a base JAM game with yearly roster updates but that doesn't seem to be much of a possibility.

  • I've always liked MK. Who would have thought that a story mode in a fighting game would matter but its that very fact that made me love this game. I've never been one to master combos or barely be able to pull off a fatality but I loved every moment I played of this game. The brutality, gore and absurdity were also positive marks in my book.

  • HONORABLE MENTION! This game came out at the perfect time. A charming little PC game that tells a cute and funny little story while poking fun at the DLC trend in the gaming world. Its a breeze to get through but still finds a way to be memorable and has something to say about some industry trends. Definitely worth a play through.
