Watched up until midnight my time (GMT 0). Jeff and Ryan are excellent hosts and carried their sections off well. The Tested.com stuff was at least entertaining if for the wrong reasons, but still pretty great overall. The Comic Vine stuff was just really, really awkward throughout. Not sure how to address this as Ryan is the only outsider with a passing interest in Comics who could have really driven those sections harder.
I've made no secret of my thoughts on holding the Bombcast "hostage" a bit of a trojan horse in the "we'll never deny non-subscribers content" (check my post history for full disclosure). I think its a pretty horrible way to do things, and I think subscriptions would have been no worse were the case that things remained business as usual.
I'm also incredibly impressed with how the community has handled itself as a result, everything I have read has been incredibly respectful and tactfully put.
" Is that for real or is that just a flippant troll (sorry, can't think of a better word for it, I know it's not correct) in response to the gnashing teeth of the listeners? I have zero metrics on audience numbers or users here, so I dunno if 5k is even remotely achievable. If some of the Quest stuff is any indication I kinda worry. "
I'm not trolling. I think I'm one of the minority that is trying to think a little bit more straight in my thread than endlessly bashing on what everyone else has said before, except mine is longer. :3 "
I wasn't accusing anyone here of trolling, least of all yourself. I was referring to the tweet stating that 5000 subscribers "frees" the Podcast for everyone. Everyone who I've read in this thread has been very civil in tone (not read the whole thing addmitedly) and I'm actually very impressed with the userbase's response to this business model. Sorry if that caused any confusion. "
Nope, that was an actual tweet by the Whiskey Media account. Basically hostage and ransom. I think it's a cheap move by them to do this. I can see the thought process behind it, but they didn't think it through all the way. Hearing the full podcast isn't going to be a pull for subscribers as it's still being reconstructed where some parts are rushed, and the random banter that happens gets either removed, or forced.
That's not the part that bugs me though, it's that they said on many occasions that nothing, nothing, would be removed and content would only be added. Yet here we are with a split community. And it's not a question of not affording, or not wanting to subscribe either. I literally cannot get a 'membership' on Giant Bomb due to my bank not letting me buy things online, being under 18 and all. Where does that put me? I don't know. I also do not like the fact that people outside the US actually have to pay more than people in the US. $10 might not be much, but it's still not fair. Add conversion rates from X currency to USD, and the price rises even more. I was okay with this idea all the way, the features sounded neat, albeit a little underwhelming. I just assumed that they'd add cooler shit as time passed, but alas, how wrong I was. I'm not infuriated like a lot of other people, nor do I hate the staff or anything like that, I just feel slightly let down by how they decided to do this. Sorry, Whiskey Media, but you lost a great deal of respect from me with this. I understand the need for money very well, but come on. There are better ways to do this. "
Dude, I agree with everything you are saying bar the currency exchange thing, that's a world issue, nothing to do with Whiskey Media. The World Economy is what it is.
Even as a subscriber I am disappointed that the Bombcast is being chopped up whereas (as far as I am aware) no other content from other sites is affected. And you're right, holding the Bombcast as a faux hostage is just... well, weird. I am sure most, if not ALL, subscribers would be more than delighted to simply contribute to the wellbeing of the amazing resource of entertainment Giant Bomb is. The T-Shirt is more than thanks enough, in my opinion.

" Hey guys, Trying to get round to subscribing and I'm getting knocked back. Is this signup Visa credit only? I have absolutely no intention of getting a credit card any time soon. Also, has there been word on paypal support? "
I had my visa debit rejected too, had to use my credit card, which is kinda a bummer. I feel for you dude.
