When you already know what you're getting....

So... yesterday the husband kinda told me what he's getting me, though not really.  He's just really proud of himself because usually each year he wants me to tell him exactly what he should get me for Christmas.  That's not much fun.  So this year he thought of something on his own and he's quite proud.  Only he says he has to order it online because no stores in the area currently have it.  I was disappointed.  He's seriously running out of time to be ordering me something.  Then he says that he probably has to order it from Gamestop or Best Buy.  I realize that this is a gaming website, and what I'm about to say is blasphemous... but I was disappointed!  I don't really want game-related or electronics stuff for Christmas.  I mean sure it's possible that whatever it is will be something really cool... but right now I'm kinda like... great, I'm gonna have to fake enthusiasm when I open it.

Then on top of that, today he goes Christmas shopping with my best friend.  So he knows I had planned on getting my best friend some stuff from Bath & Body Works.  I find out while checking our bank account online that he was there today.  UGH.  And he says she said she shopped there yesterday.  So now I can't get her B&BW stuff because she probably got me some, and that's just not cool.  PLUS apparently the hubby bought stuff while he was there, which is most likely for me... great.  I already have a ton of stuff from there.  I could use a new candle and that's about it.  I still have plenty of everything else.

UGH.  I hate to sound ungrateful.  I think a lot of it is that each year I put so much effort into coming up with the right gifts for everyone, and honestly very rarely do I get much for the holidays.  Sometimes I just want people to really think like I do, think "what does this person really want or need?"  Why is that so hard?

I do wish I had no clue at  all what he was getting me or where he was shopping.  That probably would have helped.

Truth. We really do need to be beaten over the head with what gifts women want.

Back when I was younger, and the relationship was fresh I bought my girlfriend some extraordinarily meaningful and price Gifts. One was an expensive Italian chess set she had been wanting for about a year and the next year I got her a poster autographed by Tool (her favorite band of all time) and got it framed with museum glass. Once life became more uh “domestic” this drive to hunt down the perfect gifts sort of faded (and my creativity was burned on those two amazing gifts). It doesn’t mean I love her any less, it’s just we’ve settled down and more or less won each other over. I’ve found it makes the gift giving process go over much much better if I tell her to just make a nice long Amazon wish list of things she’d want.

Sometimes us men just need some not so subtle hints.

You'll open the box and it will be a Desktop Wiistation 360 Slim 1TB.

And nothing else will matter.

Either your husband is really kinda slow concerning the presents or you're not doing a good job of showing what you really like/want.
Maybe you should try and give him subtle hints throughout the year, see if that helps...
"Oh honey, I really pity women who get video games as presents from their husbands. Don't you?"
Also, if you want to be surprised why check the credit card bill after he was apparently christmas shopping?

Take it from a guy who's fucking terrible at choosing gifts: guys are fucking terrible at giving gifts. I generally just write stories for people, because apparently I'm creative, or just give them gift cards, because apparently I have no creativity outside of writing.

My wife started telling me what she wanted years ago. When she could walk better, she even bought the gifts herself and said, honey, look what you got me for Christmas. I just grin and bear it now. Getting gifts is hard, real hard.

Why is that people who always want to be surprised are the most disappointed that what they got wasn't exactly what they wanted?

he probably went there for that reason thinking you like the store...

For certain people that can be HUGELY difficult...we never know what to get our Dad...EVER! Not because he doesn't want anything but hes the type of guy who seems to like only simple things...

And while I feel yo are being a little "oh whoa is me", if he gets you Wii fit, kick his ass

It does. I'm currently kind of stressing over what to get my girlfriend for Christmas. I got her awesome gifts for our anniversary and birthday... I set the expectations too high now. :(

Hahahaha that made me laugh a lot.

On topic: Yeah I agree with all the guys here - we really do have no idea what women want as gifts. Thank god my girlfriend's mum gave me some hints!

This cracked me up.

Also, yes he normally does just have me either go with him or tell him specifically "honey, get me exactly this thing, here's the model number and everything."  One would just hope that after twelve years he'd have a clue.  If us women can do it for you guys, why is it so hard for you guys to do the same?  :P   I do drop hints, and actually he's had several epiphanies over the last month on what to get, or so he tells me... but promptly forgets them.  I also do make specific lists, but ah well.

@guthwulf: I actually didn't know he was out shopping.  He was supposed to do it yesterday, said he might today, but I'd never heard anything about it.  I checked before my lunch break to find out how much I had to go Christmas shopping with.

I buy my sister gift cards to her preferred clothing store that year, that way she doesn't end up getting something she hates.

Sorry, it seems you are having a bad shopping season. My wife and I don't exchange cuz of  a tight budget. Anything I see that I want her to have costs $100-200US anyways. We buy for the kids and mutually 'stiff' each other. Not fun, but economical......

Agreed. Doing this would make Christmas shopping a lot less stressful, for everyone involved.

Well Im a dude and I know how to give great gifts .... my sister in law , I was having such a hard time finding something for her , but then it hit me , she is a writer , Ive seen her grab a notebook and write , she loves that so "eureka" I got her a Diechtrich limited edition MontBlanc Pen .... It was expensive but I think Im covered for at lest 10 years in gift giving , she loved it too :) she was bragging about it when she called her folks during Christmas .... So what Im trying to say we men can give awesome gifts , but its kinda hard doing it on a yearly basis .... Usualy tho , when its about me I rarely get the present I wish for , so now unless asked in advance , I will save whatever money I can and get that present for myself ... yep it works wonders
