What I Learned at PAX East This Year

...from someone who watched almost the entire thing while moderating the chat. Man, they don't warn you about this when you become a mod. So stoked for E3...

Anyway, if you haven't yet seen the Giant Bomb panel, the Royal Rumble event earlier today or the 404ing It panel slightly less earlier today, go check them out first. This list might not make a lot of sense otherwise, and all of those things are more entertaining than this is. Have fun!

  1. Smite.
  2. The Black Dragon eats Ultimo Dragon for breakfast.
  3. We will never truly know the reason why Cornelius is sticky. Theories abound, however.
  4. If you gift John Drake a refreshing Diet Coke, for Smite's sake serve it in a can and not a glass bottle.
  5. Nothing makes Max Temkin laugh harder than horrific workplace injuries.
  6. Giant Bomb was the only panel I saw, throughout the entire three days of streams, where people discussed Indie games in-depth. At PAX. Titanfall, conversely, got approximately 7 hours of coverage, despite already being out.
  7. (Gearbox's very own) Dave Lang's real-life bat-tech is somewhat lacking. His ability to cut the angriest of promos, however, is beyond reproach.
  8. If you need a new SSD, computer case or one third of whatever stream you're watching completely obfuscated, Newegg's gotcha covered.
  9. We need more Vinny pins in the Giant Bomb gift shop. Repeat, we are all out of Vinny pins.
  10. SMITE.
  11. Eric Pope is a sick and deplorable human being.
  12. For that matter, babies should not be picked up that way.
  13. Never turn your back on Dr. Tracksuit.
  14. PAX Q&As are never not awkward and uncomfortable.
  15. Don't worry, the Benq lady does not think you're an "old person" and is very interested in your fighter game accuracy quality assurance responsibilities.
  16. Poor Maggie.
  17. Mac and cheese might be "a black thing".
  18. #NavarroWolfOrder
  19. Planetside 2 does not discriminate against women who are terrible drivers, though they certainly don't mind the stereotype either.
  20. SMITE!!
  21. Persona 4 Arena, which I played whenever I wasn't keeping an eye on the stream, is a lot better than I was expecting. These Arc System Works fighters utilize an effective "tier" system for players - it's very obvious when going through its tutorials that there's plenty of features and systems that may take a lifetime to master. At the same time, it moves pleasingly fast and will very happily accommodate any player who mashes buttons or is overly dependent on the hadouken maneuver, at least to an extent sufficient for its story mode. Speaking of which, the story mode is excellently written, smartly and subtly configured for each viewpoint character and adds some great, congruous (that it is to say, it's the sort of Engrishy rap that suits the series well) music to the franchise. It also meshes the P3 and P4 characters together well and sets up some interesting hooks for P4A2 that doesn't go so far to devalue the whole game with obnoxious cliffhangers. Questions are raised, a shadowy behind-the-scenes guy is briefly introduced, possible answers are forthcoming. I dig the attention to detail to Persona's universe; it isn't just some fighting game that borrowed the characters because they looked cool.

See you next expo! When the next one rolls around, come hang out in the chat, though try to be civil. I think MB came close to his personal record for chat bans this year, and he's always trying to break that thing.

22. Murdered: Soul Suspect sounds a lot more interesting once you hear about all the close scrutiny of murder/rape cases and victimology that went into its research. It's definitely not a goofy game about ghost detectives! Nuh-uh!

23. nVidia and Randy Pitcher care not for your dignity. Get this heat sensor pointed at your throat. For freebies.

I think we all learned a bit too much about Eric Pope today. Watching those russians toss around babies somehow made me more uncomfortable than the guy who dresses up as animals and is entirely silent while posing.

Of course not. You know my powers are:

  • Becoming any video game character at will so long as I wear my crown.
  • Coloring my posts with video game music.
  • Posting Katawa Shoujo screenshots to piss people off, apparently.

I know everyone is freaking out about the baby tossing (which was very disturbing) but over all the videos on 404ing it were more disturbing this year.

I've seen several of them, though. Because... you know. The internet. It's full of weird shit.

However, I learned how to cook squirrels. So, there's that.

And also... Ya, Max is ok with a women possibly getting her head smashed in by a falling light (which has perfect comedic timing) but that's where he draws a line everybody. (Just to be clear this comment is made in jest).

I also learned that to many people watched way to much PAX streams and so people are going to be advertising Smite way more than they really should (because I think that game looks terrible). I'm now part of that problem- shoot.

And... uh... if you run a popular website you can just leave your panel in the middle of it and Alex will handle it.

I didn't really learn all that much, but the squirrel was delicious.

Is Smite the WildStar of the internet streams? I missed the Smite thing cause I was there in person, but boy if WildStar didn't have a huge presence in the city. It was on cabs, the GuideBook app kept pimping it, etc.

I'm assuming that woman was alright afterwards. It's amazing what kinds of head injuries we can take and only be a tad dazed; I once saw a giant branch fall on my dad's head from two stories up and all he just bled a bit and looked cross-eyed for a while.

Yes, that's the perfect way to put it. Smite was the WildStar of the online streams this year...

Don't be too afraid to go up to internet peoples and ask to chat/for photos, because you'll regret it when you get home. Especially at a time when everyone was so nice and accommodating, and they're not doing things you hear about "famous people" doing and hating being bothered during, like eating meals with their families.

There were a couple of times during the weekend where I saw @drewbert and got nervous and walked away, which is weird, cause him and Vinny are like...my GB dudes. In a perfect world, we'd all have very similar jobs, as we all (presumably) studied similar things in school . There were other people/friends of GB who I literally started talking to with "Hey, I follow you on Twitter!" and that's how conversations started. I didn't even dare sit in the empty seat next to him at the PRODUCED panel because I was too scared to. Also, let's be real, I wasn't gonna sit up straight for an hour.

Also, buy a better camera, because your photos with Alex, Jeff, and/or Vinny will be sorta blurry and it'll bum you out, even though it shouldn't really cause you can totally tell it's you in the photos.

@omghisam: Besides the Giant Bomb panel (which will have a HD Drew version pretty soon) and the chaotic Royal Rumble event it sets up, there's nothing too essential. I would recommend the "404ing It" panel (I included a link) to get a glimpse into Jeff's Sega antipathy, Max Temkin's casual schadenfreude and the deep pit of existential despair that is the mind of Eric Pope. As well, look for the archive of the Square-Enix Presents: Murdered: Soul Suspect panel. Though the game itself sounds fairly mediocre, there's an extended talk with an actual FBI profiler/victimologist who was brought on as a consultant during the game's development that's sort of eye-opening - in the sense that it was terrifying and bizarre and incongruously dark, even for a game about ghosts and murder. Shit got really real on that panel.

The grand majority of the panels that got streamed were from Twitch and Youtube "celebrities", most of whom weren't particularly at ease with a room full of people and wouldn't have been all that entertaining to watch in the first place. Some, like the nVidia desperation freebie funtime panel, were downright revolting. There was about five different panels for Titanfall too, if that game was something you were eager to discover more about even after the five or so hours of footage on this site alone.

Is Randy Pitcher a real person? Granted, I missed a bunch of the panels/streams you're referencing so maybe I'm missing something. Meant to be Randy Pitchford perhaps? Or did someone say his name wrong, a la giantrobot.com?

@bisonhero: He was introduced as "Randy Pitcher". I distinctly remember when he was testing the infrared heat sensor on himself and got a low reading that I said he was a "tall, cold Pitcher" in chat.
