PS4 Test

This isn't going to be a very exciting list, alas, unless you all feel like participating with recommendations (see below).

See, I'm getting to the point now where purchasing a new console is an inevitability. Yet, with my limited funds and moderate PS3/360 backlog, I've been hoping to put this off as long as possible. The rave reviews of both Bloodborne and Witcher 3 are telling me that, just maybe, the time has come to bite the bullet.

So I'm going to create a list of "must-haves" and update it over the next few months. If I hit 10 items before October, I'm going to buy myself the console for my birthday. If not, I'll let it ride until the following October and keep on updating it (I'll be adding Just Cause 3 and FFXV at some point next year if that happens, most likely).

I'm counting any:

  • Current-gen game released on the PS4, regardless of whether they're exclusive or not (I imagine most won't be).
  • Games that have horribly crippled/compromised PS3/360 ports, like Shadow of Mordor.
  • Games that are out or will be out before October.

Not including:

  • PSN games if they're available for PC (or will be) and don't seem too resource-intensive, like Axiom Verge.

(I haven't completely written off the idea of getting an Xbox One either. It's entirely which is cheapest that matters for me right now; everything else seems too close to call unless the exclusives push me over the line. D4, for instance.)

POST-E3 UPDATE: I'm now strongly considering the XB1 with the news that it has backwards compatibility. I think it surprised everyone, since Sony didn't present anything with which to respond to it (too busy dropping dream project bombs). I'll wait to see if Sony comes out with a similar feature, but now my considerations are evenly split between the two.

List items

  • [PS4] Strikes me as kind of inevitable, since I've played all the other Souls games. There's also like five or six concurrent LPs happening from all the LP people I used to watch, so it'll be nice to stop ignoring them all.

  • GB's GOTY seems like a safe bet if I want some open-world shenanigans.

  • I actually liked Witcher 2 quite a bit, and if this one is winning over those who didn't care much for 2 then I'm fairly sure I'm going to enjoy it.

  • I do like the Rocksteady-produced Arkhams. Here's hoping there's even more Riddler trophies in this one (said me and no-one else).

  • The enhanced edition is due for an October console release. I figure I'd have better luck getting it to run on a PS4 than this PC.

  • Fine. FINE. I'll play your stupid sneaky box game. I am intrigued by all this base-building business (though I doubt it'll be all Kirby's Epic Yarn flower couches) and the open world exploration. Plus, if this is going to be the last MGS game that doesn't involving "hitting the lever" for pachi-slot payouts I guess I should see it off.

  • [XBONE] I'm going to make a concurrent list of XBOne games I'm interested in as well. Here's the deal: If I hit a total of ten items comprised of both XBOne-exclusive and multiplatform games, I'll buy one of those instead. I love half the games in this compilation, so this is an easy purchase for me. Or would be if I owned the console.

  • [XBONE] PC version's either out soon or out already, but I think I'd have better luck getting it to run on its native system.

  • [XBONE] It tries a little too hard, but it looks enjoyable enough to play at least. I'd no doubt have fun with that character generation business too.
