Of course, it is the defining feeling for these games. It's funny you should make this thread, because I just found myself wanting to continue Downpour just to switch it off after a few minutes, realizing I just can't go there right now. I haven't had a moment quite like this since SH3, so this is a big compliment to Vatra and Climax.

Don't pay attention to reviews, though. Downpour in particular has been destroyed in the press for its various (and undeniable) technical issues.

For me - and it appears, for most people - these issues are more than forgivable in the face of clever interactive narrative and atmosphere, but you'll see. Homecoming is certainly the weakest entry in the series, but still quite atmospheric and a nice action adventure and survival horror game in it's own right.

Glad you're catching up on the series. Good luck out there!

It doesn’t make you feel happy or sad, it actually pulls at the various strings of your psyche to make you feel like something important and meaningful happened.

It goes without saying that it is, without a doubt, my favorite PS3 game. And not just that, but I truly believe it is a highlight of this generation.

Well put indeed! I am slightly rueful over two things, one, that I didn't complete it in one sitting and two, that my partner for the final chapter was kinda dickish and uncooperative, which ruined the experience somewhat. But that, again, is a strength of Journey as something that embraces the medium as expressive tool: That something like that is even possible.

Ah, phoenix. I remember the feeling this game would evoke whenever something story-related would give me a new summon. There was just something great, rewarding and immersive about those moments when the gap between the fighting screens and the story screens would blur just a little bit, whenever the story throws those shiny red orbs at you to pick up. This intradiegetic representation of abilities is another, although rather simple and stupid reason I love the materia system so, so much.

How punishing are the games? Is it RE-style where random exploring rather than following the optimal path typically means fighting too many enemies, which leads to using too much ammo/health/etc. and ending up forced to restart, or do you have a decent shot completing them in one go without a walkthrough?

Yes, absolutely. Enemies are very easy to avoid with the flashlight turned off, they stay dead once killed, and though you don't have nearly enough ammo to kill them all, you won't want or need to.

SH is not about killing or being good at killing. You can also adjust the combat difficulty and puzzle difficulty seperately.
