Going to wait for the next gen versions to release and then I'll see how things are at that time. I've got enough of a backlog that I'm not in a rush and if the overall game is of a higher quality at that time then all the better for me.

@undeadpool: As much as I'd love that I think one of Sakurai's only rules is not to use characters that don't originate from video games. Or that's what I've heard over the years at least.

@jagerxbomb: There have been multiple posts in this thread of people (including myself) saying that it was negligent but not maliciously intentional. But sure if you need to put up a strawman go ahead I guess.

@jagerxbomb: It's not the developers fault that the sequence they created was there? Huh?

I feel like this point kind of came and went years ago after Cloud came in and then again returned. Everything you say about Sephiroth representing an era when Sony won out over nintendo could be said for cloud. Nintendo doesn't seem to care about those limits anymore if they ever did. As you said they also have Joker who is from a hit game on the playstation who hasn't appeared on a Nintendo console outside of a spin-off Musou game that to my knowledge still hasn't released in the west.

In general it seems like they're more willing to reach across those gaps and shake hands which is a good thing for everyone involved in my opinion. I agree with you that there's no sanctity of Smash or anything that's being broken. At least for me there's not. I just like seeing popular or historic characters join the roster.

I guess it depends on what kind of hype you're talking about. There's always unreasonable levels of hype for major media. Like naming my child because I base my life around this one facet of media kind of thing right. That is almost guaranteed to eventually not payoff.

But reasonable hype of just being excited for a long running franchise that you typically enjoy can be okay. Like another comment has pointed out, stuff like Breath of the Wild, From software games (in most cases), Witcher 3, larians recent works with divinity (and their current effort with BG3 so far) all shape up pretty well compared to the general hype around them and could even be argued to have surpassed what was expected. I'd say Persona 5 not only lived up to the hype as a successor to 4 it also grew the fanbase as well. Obviously no franchise or creator is infallible though. And I think that's where the problem comes in. Eventually people get burned because they only care about the title and don't evaluate the games on a case by case basis.

If you look at Cyberpunk as the obvious current example, look at the number of people who swear to the moon and back that CDPR is gods greatest gift to the game industry just because they made the Witcher 3. I can't think of anything I'd look at and say, well you did great that one time so you'll never fail me again. That's just a bad idea really.

And as weird as it is to say it given how popular it is now, I think a good number of marvel movies would be good examples of movies that surpassed their hype and lived up to the hype as time went on (for people who are heavily invested and don't tire of it at least). They obviously exploded beyond what people expected. And I feel like it's safe to say that for most people the wrap up of the first chapter with thanos and sending off the OG roster lived up to most expectations. Or at least didn't massively disappoint most people.

Lord of the Rings also seems to have fairly good status as a trilogy to this day. Less so for the hobbit obviously.

@hatking: Not sure how cert works, but is it possible Sony and/or Microsoft failed them back in Sept/Oct and that forced the delay that happened after it went gold? Would make sense given the state of what we're seeing right now, assuming it was worse before that delay.

@efesell: Thats really what they should have done. They got too ambitious I think. Instead it was marketed for PC and the old gen consoles and next gen is firmly in the "we'll release a free upgrade later" camp. No reason for anyone to think that old gen shouldn't be at a baseline playable state when the only way to play it on next gen consoles is through backwards compatibility.

They really should have just been upfront and axed or delayed consoles but they tried to have their cake and eat it too. They didn't want to give up the larger share of the established console market even if it means releasing a game that doesn't quite run up to snuff on them.

@lilnatureboyx: Definitely one of the more ridiculous sentences I've seen from some people. I laughed when I saw people spreading it last night. The "why are you playing a next gen game on old gen" defenses would feel more valid if I could walk out and buy a next gen copy of the game to be honest. As it stands people are only going to see old gen copies of this "next gen" game on the shelf.

@xgreyfox357: I don't have the tweet, but the devs clarified that consoles preload with the patch I believe. You're likely playing the day 1 version already. You can always check the patch version if you want to be sure though.
