E3 2010!

With the Natal event this evening, E3 is already upon us.  I'm sure we're all excited to find out more about the games we're interested in, so I figured I'd make a list of which games I'm most looking forward to and why:

  • Fallout: New Vegas (360/PS3/PC):  I still need to get around to fixing my computer and finishing the DLC for Fallout 3, but that doesn't stop me from being interested in New Vegas.  I'm a bit worried however, that it's being developed by the same people as the not-so-loved Alpha Protocol.
  • Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (360/PS3):  Why am I looking forward to this game?  Cause IT'S MAHVEL BAYBEE!!  I'm a fan of fighting games, whether they're technical or ridiculous.
  • Fable III (360/PC):  Molyneux always gets me hook, line and sinker.  When I got around to playing Fable II last year, it was once of my favorite games in a long, long time.  Molyneux delivered on most of his promises last time around, and I'm excited to see what's next.  I remain skeptical of the inclusion of motion control ( Natal) support in Fable III.
  • SOCOM 4 (PS3):  One of my favorite PS2 franchises.  I was disappointed in Confrontation, but it was made by different people.  Again, not sold on the motion control ( Move) support.
  • Red Faction Armageddon (360/PS3/PC):  I barely know anything about this game so far, but I'm excited to see how they increase the level of destruction from Guerrilla.  I'm a little worried that a lot of the game (80%) will take place underground, since it will make for a drastically different game than the previous one and return to its roots of the first Red Faction.
  • Monday Night Combat (XBLA):  Sadly, the only new IP on my list.  I got to play a round of this at PAX East in March and it was pretty fun.  I'm mostly looking forward to a release date than any other info.  I'm pretty sure this will be included as part of the "Summer of Arcade."

Other notable mentions:

I'm also looking forward to the unveiling of the 3DS since it's reportedly more powerful than the Wii.  Hopefully we'll also see the announcement of PS2 games on PSN and more Dreamcast games on XBL and PSN including ChuChu Rocket!, Jet Grind Radio and Skies of Arcadia?

Weekend Gaming! 06.11.10

Short one this week!  I've got an all-day party to go to on Saturday so I won't be playing much then.  It is suppose to rain most of Sunday, so here's what I'll be playing then:

  • Saints Row 2 (360):  I think I'm just about done with the story.  I plan on finishing it this weekend.  I'm kinda stuck at a part and keep dying, but I'll consider sucking less and beating it.  I forgot how fun these games are.  I really enjoy messing around in Stilwater and giving waves upon waves of opposing gang members the business with a shotgun or an uzi.  Also, crashing into someone only to have them or myself be ejected from the car is still hilarious to me.
  • Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii):  I'm 14 stars in so far and once I finish Saints Row 2 I'm really going to focus on this game, I promise!  I'm liking the level design, but the pace of the game is ruined by the fact that I'm returned to the face-ship after every star I collect.  I really don't need to ever walk around the face-ship, please stop putting me there!  Ruined is an overstatement, but it's really my only gripe with the game, so it sticks out to me.
  • New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Wii):  I'm playing through this pretty slowly with the girlfriend.  We're at World 2-1 now, we'll probably play through the second world this weekend.
  • MGS: Peace Walker (PSP):  I got this from Amazon today and I can't wait to play this.  It's been getting some pretty good reviews and as you can probably tell from my username, I'm a pretty big MGS fan.

I'll be posting again (maybe Sunday?) about E3 predictions and what I'm looking forward to hearing about.

Check out these sales if you're in the market for some games:

I did it!!  I finally earned a gold medal in all 200 events in Forza 3!!
I did it!!  I finally earned a gold medal in all 200 events in Forza 3!!

Number of races in Forza 3?  1,060.  Hours it took to get 49/50 achievements?  42 hours.  Time it took to finish all events in Forza 3?  118.5 hours.  Getting my 5th S-Rank?  Priceless.

I have very few plans this weekend, so I'll probably do a lot of gaming.  Here's what I'll be playing:

  • Saints Row 2 (360):  I picked this up at Best Buy with a giftcard on Wednesday.  I loved the first one, and I'm sure I'll enjoy my return to Stilwater in the second one.  I love the variety of hilarious activities you can do in Saints Row and I love the robust character creation tool.  The fact that you can go to a plastic surgeon at any point in the game and change your appearance is amazing to me.  I often get sick of looking at the same character design for 15 hours.  Sidenote: I totally chose the British accent for my character.
  • Red Dead Redemption (360):  After finishing the campaign a few days ago, I think I'll jump back into the multiplayer.  If you want to "posse-up" send me a message on XBL at JMoney156.  It's definitely the best story Rockstar has created, one that truly feels epic.  Not 100% sure that it's my favorite Rockstar game to date.  Give me a week or so to mull it over.
  • Bad Company 2 (360):  I might get around to this, but I'm not sure.  I played a lot earlier this week, so I might take a break.  I'll be working on my assault class to finishing my expert class achievements if I end up playing.
  • Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii):  I'm only 7 stars in, so I've barely scratched the surface of this one.  I'll probably spend most of my weekend playing this.
  • Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (Wii):  I bought this through Gamefly, because I was playing through it so slowly that it was cheaper than renting it for a month.  I'm not really digging the aiming controls, but I think I just might need some more time with it.  Why is the A button shoot and the B button jump?  The B button is a trigger on the Wii remote ... that should ALWAYS be the shoot button.

I'll also be finishing season two of Californication for the second time (first time for the gf).  Great show.

Weekend Gaming! 05.28.10

Since I got my Wii and Red Dead Redemption, I've been way too busy playing games to blog about them, but I finally found a few minutes.  Last weekend my college roommate Joe came to visit.  We played a little bit of Super Smash Bros. Brawl and a little bit of Boom Blox Bash Party, but we mostly just did a lot of drinking, so that's why I didn't end up blogging last weekend.  I started playing Super Mario Galaxy (I know, that's so 2007) in prep for Super Mario Galaxy 2 (slowly on its way to my house via Amazon) and I beat it in about 3 days.  I only have 61 stars so I'll get back to it eventually, but I need to take a little break.

Tonight I'm headed to the Red Sox game at Fenway Park, but it's a three day weekend, so that still leaves plenty of time to play the following games:

  • Red Dead Redemption (360):  I'm in love with this game.  I've been wanting to play a western for so long now, and after getting a taste of Redemption at PAX East, I've been waiting for its release.  I'm about 13 hours in so far and I'm really enjoying the western landscape and everything thing that fills it.  I was surprised at how quickly the game opens up at the beginning.  I feel like it kind of pushes you out into the wilderness before you're ready.  And yes, my horse was killed by a mountain lion more than once (those things are like ninjas).  Also, the multiplayer is pretty fun, but a little janky.  Better than GTAIV though.
  • Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (Wii):  Got this in the mail from Gamefly a few days ago, but I haven't touched it yet.  I'll probably put in a few hours this weekend.
  • Forza 3 (360):  Alright, I think I'll be able to wrap up the rest of the events this weekend.  It'll take some determination, but I think I've got it.  I've sunk 109+ hours into this game and I'm so close to that S-rank.
  • Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (360):  I'll be working on my Assault and Recon classes this weekend.  Hit me up if you want to play (GT: JMoney156).
  • Super Street Fighter IV (360):  I really need to break out my fight stick and get in some matches.  JomegaTheGreat, are you ready for a challenge?

I'm officially taking a break from Final Fantasy XIII.  I let Joe borrow it and he's lying to me and telling me he enjoys it.

Weekend Gaming! 05.14.10

I've got the place to myself this weekend, good time to get some gaming done.  I'm looking at 65-75 weather for Saturday and Sunday, so I'll be bringing my La-Z-Boy, monitor and 360 out onto the back porch to enjoy the nice weather and the following games:

  • Super Street Fighter IV (360):  I'll be playing some Ranked matches this weekend, maybe a little bit of the endless mode too.  Hopefully Joe can find some time to jump online and put up a challenge too.
  • Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (360):  I'm really getting sucked into this game.  I've wrapped up my medic class and I've made some decent progress on the rest of the classes.  Also, Tyler Barber of Rebel FM posted a twitter update linking me to some sweet helicopter takedowns.
  • Forza 3 (360):  I'm 80+ hours in and 67.3% done with the races.  This is taking forever!  Luckily, I'm loving every minute of it.
  • Final Fantasy XIII (PS3):  I'm about 9 hours in and it's safe to say that the level designers should be fired and never allowed to work in the industry again.  The style-over-function aesthetic of the environments reminds me a lot of the first Mass Effect.  Intricately detailed environments (in some spots) which are completely void of NPCs drive me nuts in video games.  I'm still digging the battle system a lot, I just wish it didn't take so long for the game to roll out all of its features.

Celtics move onto the Eastern Conference Finals with their win over the Cavs last night.  Hopefully the Bruins move onto the Eastern Conference Finals with a win over the Flyers tonight!  I'm incredibly excited for Red Dead Redemption ( 9.75/10 in Game Informer, 10/10 in OPM UK) next week.  I think I might have to Gamefly Alan Wake, as well.  Watch Bright Falls if you have some time to kill, it's the live action prequel to Alan Wake.  Also, I'll be getting my Wii next week.  Exciting times!

LTTP: I got a Wii

While watching coverage of E3 2006, I remember being skeptical of the Wii.  I also thought a black one would look better than the white one they were showing off then.  I thought I'd eventually pick one up and I honestly didn't think it would take this long.  Fast forward nearly four years later, and Sunday they finally released the black Wii with not only Wii Sports, but Wii Sports Resort, and Wii Motion Plus for $200.  I figured I'd give myself a week to think about it, but yesterday I found a deal that made me jump the gun.  Target was offering 15% off any order, in effect making the Wii $170, so I finally bought one and it should arrive some around May 19th.

I added Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and LOZ: Twilight Princess to my Gamefly queue and started checking prices for some games I wanted, as well as a second Wii Remote/Motion Plus bundle and an additional nunchuk (for the girlfriend).  The best deal I found was at Gamestop (with a 25% off orders $100+):

  • Boom Blox Bash Party                        $22.49   (29.99 - 7.50)
  • No More Heroes 2                               $22.49   (29.99 - 7.50)
  • Wii Remote/Motion Plus bundle       $41.24   (54.99 - 13.75)
  • Wii nunchuk                                          $14.99   (19.99 - 5.00)
                                                                        --------------------------------
                                                                      $101.21   ($33.75 savings)

I'm waiting for my copy of Red Dead Redemption to ship so I can put the $20 gaming credit from that toward Super Mario Galaxy 2 (making that $29.99) and getting another $20 gaming credit from that.  Hmmm ... 6 new games in the next 2 weeks ... I might need some time off of work ...

Weekend Gaming! 05.07.10

I've got an all-day party to go to on Saturday, and Mother's Day is Sunday, so if I get around to gaming I'll just be playing more of what I played last weekend with one addition:

  • Super Street Fighter IV (360):  I've gotta jump online and play some more matches this weekend.  Find me in the Endless Battle mode!
  • Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (360):  Ten hours into the multiplayer so far and almost to level 10.  I've realized I'm enjoying this more than MW2, and I think it's the teamwork that really makes for better gameplay.  I also got the Dr. Pepper codes and unlocked the four addition weapons.  If I get some more codes I'll give them away here.
  • Forza 3 (360):  Over seventy hours in and roughly 58% done with all of the events.  Easily worth the $80 bucks for the special edition, haha.
  • Final Fantasy XIII (PS3):  The beginning is extremely linear so far (I'm about 4.5 hours in), but it's not really bothering me.  The battle system is pretty interesting and the environments look fantastic.  I'm also digging the upgrading system (similar to the sphere grid in FFX), but I do miss standard level-ups.

I probably won't play more Red Dead Revolver until next weekend.  Gotta get around to seeing Iron Man 2 as well.

Weekend Gaming! 05.01.10

Wrapped up Quest for Booty last Sunday and Heavy Rain the day before yesterday.  Amazing game, blog post about that coming soon.  Here's what I'll be playing this weekend:

  • Super Street Fighter IV (360):  Not sure if you know this but SSFIV TOTALLY CAME OUT THIS WEEK!!  I'll mainly be playing this online, as all 35 of the characters are unlocked from the start so there's not much point to playing the arcade mode.  I'll be working on my Ryu, as well as checking out some of the new characters.
  • Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (360):  I've been meaning to get back into this, but I haven't played in about two weeks.  Hoping to get in a few hours with the multiplayer this weekend.  I've started working on my Engineering class, so I'll keep switching between that and the medic class.
  • Forza 3 (360):  Still working toward those 200 gold medals ...
  • Red Dead Revolver (PS2):  I picked this up at FYE for $4 after preordering Red Dead Redemption.  I'm attempting to beat this game before RDR comes out.  I'm not enjoying it nearly as much as what I played of Redemption at PAX East, but that was to be expected.  The pacing of Revolver doesn't feel right, but I like the upgrade system for the weapons and I was surprised that it has a cover system, even if it's a bit janky.

Steam has been bankrupting me one dollar at a time.  In the past two weeks I've picked up the following in Steam deals (no longer available):

Weekend Gaming! 04.24.10

I finished up Red Faction Guerrilla a week and a half ago, so here's what I'll be playing this weekend:

  • Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (360):  I'm currently level 8 right now with a little more than 6 hours into the multiplayer.  I'm not getting to play this nearly as much as I want to, but I'll have to deal.
  • Forza 3 (360):  I'm still working toward 200 Gold medals in the game.  This will unlock the last achievement for me, making it my 5th game to S-rank.  I'm currently 43.8% done the game with 50+ hours of playtime, 5,100 miles driven, 442 victories, and 132 cars in the garage.
  • Quest for Booty (PSN/PS3):  Bought this on PSN during the Spring Fever sale.  I've been meaning to play Crack in Time, but I want to play through this first.  I think it's a bit too long to finish this weekend, but who knows?  I usually get sucked into the R&C games and can't stop playing them.
  • Heavy Rain (PS3):  Finally got Heavy Rain through Gamefly after a 6-day delivery.  I've put in an hour and a half so far, slow start, surprisingly relaxing.  I pressed x to Jason with unsuccessful results.  I'm going to try to squeeze in at least 3 hours of playtime this weekend.
