Best of 2012

I found I played less games this year and haven't gotten around to playing some of the later releases. Had a bit of a struggle filling out the lower half of the list. Maybe a few older games also... It's my list, I will do what I want!

List items

  • It was the ride not the destination. It came out early in 2012 and I remember really liking it while playing. I had mixed feelings throughout and near the end but revisiting it recently made me realize that the majority of it was great. Not perfect, arguably I enjoyed ME 2 more, but it delivered enough great moments that it's my top 2012 game.

  • I had told myself I would check this game out one day, even with all the buzz around it I just didn't have the desire to check it out immediately. Then one day PSN Plus was giving away the first two episodes for free, so I thought, eh why not? I experienced those two in one sitting and immediately bought the third! Like a good TV series I was hooked, and more to the point, invested in the characters. At the time I remember thinking this is the beginning of the future of video games. Even when the choices don't make a huge difference if you seek out the mechanics they sure as hell make it feel like they do. That's what all stories in video games should strive to achieve.

  • I never played the original, and turn bass strategy games have never managed to hold my attention for long, so I'm happy I gave this one a chance. A perfect balance between squad missions and base building, giving you hard choices and giving you the feeling of always making it by the skin of your teeth. I may have scum saved more then a few times but I think what really stands out is the biggest loss I took I lived with. It just felt right, like that's how it had to happen. Started a Classic Ironman run after I beat it on normal, have yet to get past the alien base. It is fantastic.

  • I like fighting games and I like the Persona series. So yeah, no surprise I like P4A. What's more of a surprise is I never liked the BB series but Arc managed to make a fighting system I obsessed over for awhile. I wondered if it was the Persona license that was keeping me around and I do think that had a lot to do with it. However a friend of mine who was really into BB told me P4A had converted him, so I should give Arc more credit where it is due. I have to give Atlus proper respect for making a story that takes place in the context of a fighting game that is believable and merges the P3 and P4 cast in interesting ways. I still play it casually with a friend and will probably do so for a long time.

  • Had no desire to play this game at release but thanks to a steam sale I'm happy I did. I can see why Vinny enjoyed it so much, it's a riot to play. All it's mechanics feel great and even though it doesn't change much from the GTA formula it does manage to present some new refreshing ideas in the open world crime genre.

  • I enjoyed the first but it never held my attention for long enough to complete it. They did an outstanding job refining all the mechanics and this time it hooked me until completion. Well, maybe even after completion for a little while.

  • I am a huge fan of the Hitman Franchise, so I had high expectations going in. It contained a lot of things I didn't enjoy but it still managed to pull off enough great moments to make it a memorable experience.

  • Don't look at me like that! I haven't played an RE game since Code Veronica and recently got the urge o check out RE 5. I had heard enough about it that I knew it wasn't going to be like the older games, so I set my expectations accordingly. It still looks great and it's a blast to play. Taking on mobs of enemies feels hectic, strategic and fun. Why can't all AI co op partners be as useful as Sheva? I now kind of want to check out RE 6... Maybe when I can get it for cheap... Maybe a patch will fix it's issues? Check back for my top ten 2013 list to find out!

  • Had a fun couple weeks playing this on and off.

  • Had a brief but fun loot filled time.
