Best Buy is apparently now telling people that this is slated for 2026, and I remembered I posted this poll here so I'm gonna bring it back and see that tips things back the other way for anyone. It seems like Best Buy is also reaching out to anyone who pre-ordered to let them know they were "made aware" of the release date change.

For what it's worth, Amazon still has it listed as a December 2023 release, and Gamestop has it as a December 2024 release. The Nintendo shop still has it as TBD.

This whole event feels like a Ubisoft sidequest everyone would be dunking on for being too ridiculous and stereotypical. It's like how images during the peak of COVID lockdowns had people thinking that the silly environmental story telling bits we'd run into in games actually maybe aren't too far from reality.

My only hope is that the people who were introduced to pay issues still care about that stuff after this, though I suspect like Grubb said that the only thing people will remember from all this is Taylor's actions and the dramatic reactions they got from people. I love being online.

I dunno, the feeling I get just from reading the reviews is that this is one of those "epitome of a 7/10 game" games. Not necessarily terrible, but certainly doesn't stand out among the other big open world clusterfucks being released either.

I feel like pointing out that this game currently has a higher Metacritic score than Saint's Row, another uninspired open world game that borrows heavily from a successful predecessor while trying to do it's own thing. Granted, Saint's Row also had a huge amount of bugs to deal with, but Knights also sounds like it has it's own problems.

World of Warcraft really was a gaming addiction epidemic in it's early years. Didn't help that my entire family was addicted to it. Up until very recently, even after I had long since stopped playing, I would still get ambushed by family on holidays and have game time literally forced on me. I don't really remember specific instances of WoW ruining my life, but I'm sure they were there. I do recall how WoW addiction negatively affected the lives of my family very clearly, though.

There's small stuff like how as much as I love games like Civ or Harvest Moon, I can't play them very often because I become so hyper focused that I lose entire days to them. My biggest and most embarrassing story is skipping middle school for a week straight just to stay home and play Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. It obviously lead to me getting in deep trouble both at home and in school, but I ultimately worked through it and I like to think I learned a valuable lesson.

I agree with everything you wrote, and think it's a great writeup.

As you alluded to, I feel like the attempt to redeem Cyberpunk 2077 and CD Projeckt Red's place in Gaming Canon has been in the works since the beginning. Edgerunners is, basically, a brilliant marketing strategy timed with the re-release of the game on Playstation and the announcement of more content aiming people's attention at the successful redemption that had already happened. The faithful were rewarded with renewed interest, and those who were on the fence or simply unaware were drawn into a game that is probably at least Okay (and on sale!) at this point.

Why wouldn't people want to believe it? Tim Rogers has a whole bit in his massive Cyberpunk 2077 review dedicated to pointing out just how much people like talking about Cyberpunk 2077. If No Man's Sky can recover from massive controversy, why not the game that was supposed to be the next masterpiece from the studio that brought you Witcher 3?

I do still think about the reaction to and success of Cyberpunk 2077 sometimes. Did it ever really suffer? How many people who were initially turned off eventually grabbed it because they heard it was actually pretty good, or that the game breaking bugs had been mostly ironed out? Their twitter infamously once tweeted out something along the lines of "whole game will be a meme". I've been thinking about that a lot.

If Nintendo really is gearing up for a Switch successor, I do think it'll be closer to a 'Switch Pro' than a new console. I feel like if they were planning an all new thing we'd have gotten some sniff of whatever weird gimmick they want to focus on next. They strike me as a company that feels like they always have to do something new and weird with their products.

Instead I imagine whatever comes next will just kind of be a stronger Switch. Maybe they'll double down on games looking and running nice in handheld mode. I don't imagine much will change with the joycons aside from maybe ironing out the drift issues. I could see them introducing more stuff like the ringcon and the leg strap accessories and trying to incorporate those into more of their games.

I don't think Miiverse is ever coming back, aside from the echo of it that lives on in Splatoon 3. The NSO app they have might have some bigger presence or connectivity on the new UI. If it is a "New Switch", I can't see it not playing original Switch games but that also means it won't be the quantum leap some people are hoping for.

My extremely tepid expectation is that whatever it is will basically be a way to play Switch games like Hyrule Warriors or Rune Factory 5 without the framerate dropping to single digits.

@sethmode: I dunno, I feel like the main takeaways I'm seeing after the trailer were "why can't the games look like this" and "Chris Pratt sucks as Mario". It's definitely happening.

My opinion is very much that if it was anyone other than Chris Pratt voicing Mario, nobody would care as much about it as they seem to now. Hell, if Charlie Day was playing both Mario Bros people might even love it.

I'm not going to defend Pratt or the choice to put him here, but I do feel like the level of obsession over having him in it at all and the tiny sliver of his performance we got is at least a little bit silly. People really want to hate on it for a variety of reasons, and so they will.

Looks fine. It did get me to laugh a bit with the dramatic penguin battle bit and the classic BWAAARM sound effects.

But I am intensely curious if we'll see the "real world" and if it'll be CGI since the trailer confirms that Mario is just now discovering the Mushroom Kingdom.

Of course the staff is going to have to stay positive regardless, and maybe this changes nothing. But when RV swooped in the reaction was very much "Who the heck is Red Ventures". With this, there's a lot more "Oh god not Fandom".

The pessimism and hand wringing can be obnoxious, but I do feel like there's more behind it this time beyond the anxiety of seeing a website change hands.

My gut reaction is to keep an eye on the wiki. I haven't heard great things about Fandom, but we've got enough evidence that RV isn't any better now so whatever. That's capitalism baby, love a good consolidation. Hope things work out in the long run for everyone involved.
