Old Games I played in 2019

2019 for gaming for me was actually fairly active. I got a new PC from Christmas last year and its been powerful enough to play some games that I couldn't play on the Switch. Its been a pretty decent machine for gaming but I've used it mostly for social media through twitter as well as important life stuff that I won't get into. Its been a fun year for me to try some of 2019's games as well as play through some older games that I haven't played before until this year.

But this list I'm making is solely for all the old games I got to play this year. Usually what I've done in the past is have my Best Games of 2019 blogs have a section with old games I played in past years. This time I'm gonna dedicate that blog for the 2019 games I played only and give the old games a separate list and briefly talk about my thoughts on those games. I've beaten some of these games while I haven't finished others. But without further ado, here are the old games I got tp play in 2019:

List items

  • Firewatch was my first game that I beat in 2019. I also played this on the Switch and LET ME TELL YOU, the Switch is NOT, AND I MEAN NOT the version of this game you want to play. I found Firewatch on the Switch to be poorly optimized as there were moments where the 30 FPS slowed down below 30, the screen was freezing while I was walking, and many moments where texture loading was taking place. It wasn't the best looking Switch game by far but having said that, I was still engaged with the story and wanted to see this game through. This game is simultaneously one of the most relaxing games I played as well as one of the most tense ones too. It was pretty relaxing exploring the park you were watching over and enjoying the outdoor atmosphere, but the story itself made me worry something was gonna go bad any moment and the game would shift to horror. The chemistry between Henry and Delilah had me hooked as I loved the comedic banter of the two characters and learning more about them as to why both have this job looking after this park. Its a really nice narrative experience in a video game and I certainly recommend playing Firewatch...just not on the Switch.

  • I should get back into this one at some point. Its this strange miss mash of 80's references with The Real Ghostbusters stylized animated cutscenes and a Stranger Things styled plot (the story in some ways actually predates Stranger Things Season 3). Gameplay wise it kind of felt like an overhead version of Mystical Ninja swapping out characters who are ideal for solving certain situations. Actually, the main character's hair reminds me of Goemon's. I just got stuck one level where it demanded really tight dodges from one character and the game bugged out where once I got hit, it spawned me into a poisonous pit of death and I instantly died. I probably need to get and the game isn't that long, but I remember getting really annoyed at that portion.

  • NOW HERE"S A GAME I HAVE TO GET TO! XCOM Enemy Unknown is one of my favorite games of all time and I might dare say its between that or Celeste that is my favorite game of the decade. XCOM 2 is a freaking good strategy game too. It introduces some great new gaddgets that your soldiers can use ranging from Freeze Grenades (which are a Godsend against mind controlling sectoids) and hacking devices. The new narrative of you losing the war from XCOM EU and you creating this Resistance to expose the Extra-Terrestrials that they aren't as peaceful and uniting as they make themselves out to being is also very gripping. The new classes they introduce are also lots of fun as using a Ranger to either run up and Sword or Axe an enemy to death feels nice! I've just been busy some other old or new games and honestly, I really need to see this game through. When Phoenix Point came out and I heard about that game's reception, I thought "You know, why should I get a less polished XCOM when I still have XCOM 2 waiting to be booted again." Oh and for a game that's notorious for giving PC gamers issues, it ran incredibly well on my PC. Which I can't say for certain PC games I tried to play that came out in 2019.

  • Splatoon 2 is great y'all. I finally got to play the game after it was on sale late last year and I beat the story mode shortly after I beat Firewatch. The Story is a fun little distraction, but of course the online is where its at. I found myself maining with bucket weapons for satisfying short range shots and its appropriate since my user name has Bucket in its title. I only got to play 2 splatfests ever. I was on team Pancake for Pancakes vs. Waffles, which was BS Waffles won because Pancakes had better Splat Ammo that looked just like pancake batter. But I was able to help Team Narwhal bring home a rightful win for team Unicorn vs. Team Narwhal. So I'm 1-1 all time in Splatfests.

  • Cuphead is gonna join the likes of XCOM EU and Celeste as one of the hardest games I beat. I bought this game on Switch and it ran incredibly well on my little portable handheld. The game itself is fairly frustrating but that's the point as you need to use trial and Error to figure out how to defeat this 1930's style boss fights who are doing everything in their power to not will over their contracts to the Devil (who you are trying to make up as your own debt to him as it tells a precautionary tale to not Excessively Gamble or you'll see yourself in a bad state). And what's not been said about the game's presentation already? Visually its an artistic achievement dedicating its animation to 1920-1930's style animation and the music fantastic and appropriate for the setting.

I even got to play Co-Op with my Brother who hasn't beaten Cuphead, yet whenever we play Co-Op he's always the last man standing and taking the contracts. Go figure.

  • So I've only played the first game of the recent Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney Trilogy that was released on Switch. I've yet to beat the 1st game but I'm willing to go back to it. I'm on the fourth case and I'm enjoying it as a neat take on the adventure game genre trying to lawyer your way to winning court cases defending your defendant. Of course you di this by visiting the scenes of the crime and find essential evidence and statements from witnesses to use in your defense to prove the innocence of your defendant. Its also appropriately whacky in a fun and enjoyable manner. THese were games I always saw my brother play when I was young and haven't played them myself until this year. I should get back to finishing the 4th case. Oh and it got me to watch some episodes of the Ace Attorney anime last year and...let's say the original source is better but the anime has a few bright spots (Edgeworth's English VA is perfect).

  • I've put 10 hours into the vanilla game and I've really enjoyed what the game is like so far. Its a very competently made tactical strategy game and with the RPG like progression, you could argue its one of the best Mario RPG's in years. I didn't get tired of the game by any means, but I played it while waiting one Wargroove and that eventually became my go to strategy Switch game for a time. I should at least play through this game to at least get to that Opera Boss fight, which has one of Grant Kirkhope's best songs he's worked on. Sorry DK64 Rap.

  • I've played some Smash again mainly for checking out the Season pass characters. I haven't played as Terry yet (what's wrong with me) but I checked out Joker, DQ Hero and Banjo-Kazooie. Banjo-Kazooie are my favorite DLC characters so far. They're pretty accessible compared to the other characters and their stage and music is the best. Can't stop listening to the cover of Mad Monster Mansion.

  • Also known as Thunder Force 4, and this has to be the oldest game I played this year. I got this one Switch as I was on a hankering to play an SMHUP and I noticed this SEGA AGES re-release was only 8 bucks. Took it there and I've really enjoyed playing it, but man its hard. It feels so good to get a powerful weapon and have lay waste to swarms of enemies coming towards you. But the game will gut punch you as when you die while using that powerful weapon, the weapon either degrades to its weaker base self or the strong weapon goes away entirely when you respawn. I've reached the final level but I don't think I can beat it on its base difficulty. Thankfully the Sega Ages version has an easy mode where you can keep your weapons and get a shield after you lose a life. Also apparently this is the hardest Thunder Force game as the 3 previous ones were actually pretty freaking easy?
