I am a student in game design researching sexual identity in the video gaming industry. Both in terms of game content, those who play and those who make video games. I would be very grateful if anyone on here would care to respond to some questions to further my research project. I am looking specifically at gender roles, the portrayal of sexual identity and how sexual definitions of characters are perceived and experienced as a player and by the player. I would like to use this space to facilitate a discussion on sexual identity and representation in video games in order to gain information regarding these questions.
It would be very helpful if you could indicate your age, ethnicity and sexual preference when posting, all research gathered will remain anonymous. (Should you not wish to give any of this information, that is completely fine and i respect your choice not to) Please give open and honest feedback. Feel free private message me if you want to talk about this topic but not post your views publicly.
I would also like to now more of your views on how you would like games to start representing GLBT content and how you think they should include such content.
For example. Games are often fantasy realties, it can be argued that video games dont need to represent real life cultures and sexuality's accurately. But then it can also be argued that fantasy is influenced by reality and because of the interactive nature of games and the amount of people that play them, accurate depiction's of todays society is necessary.
Others may argue that they dont want this, for example you may have parents who dont want there child playing a game that has gay people in it because they dont want there child to be exposed to something they feel is "wrong" in other cases it could be the gamer themselves that feels this way.
What are your views on this?
also it would be greatly appreciated if you could perhaps forward this research topic to other "gaymers" you may know. as i am finding it difficult to get responses.
So basically just write what you think about and how you feel Gay, Lesbian, Bi and Transgender is represented in games and the industry and we can get some discussions flowing .
Unfortunately i can not say whether i agree or not with any view given because for the sake of legitimate research, i can not risk steering opinions in any direction other than the ones given to me.
I would love to see some back and forth of different views, however please keep it respectable.
Thank you anything given will be of great help to my research.
