For your consideration: Monstress by Marjorie Liu, it's pretty amazing.

Thank you kindly for the recommendation and the comments :)

I think you’re right in how the term JRPG is somewhat problematic. I just wish many of the bigger Japanese franchises, such as Final Fantasy, Star Ocean, the Tales series etc. would improve their writing and be more unique in the stories they tell, as the gameplay is often pretty imaginative and a lot of fun. Even if you’re trying to appeal to a perceived young male audience, that audience still deserves better than the dross it currently gets. As it is, I do still hope that, as you say, someone comes along to put the cat among the pigeons and show how much better things can be, because at the moment it’s just not good enough.

I’m a big fan of adventure games largely due to how rich and diverse the genre is. The fact that a lot of them are aimed at a non-male, non-teen audience is partly the reason why I love the genre so much, and the Telltale stuff, aside from being generally excellent, has hopefully opened up the genre to more people. There have always been great adventure games, but it’s been really nice to see something of a renaissance in terms of their popularity and exposure.
