I just want to say I think the UI in this game feels very very bad at times - "oh no I didn't mean to do that" should NEVER be an issue in a turn-based strategy game, but it happened to me a few times, even after many hours of playing. I sympathize with Abby's frustrations and agree with the criticisms I've seen so far in the comments.

Yeah, this is by far the biggest issue with the modern XCOM games. (well, that and the glitchiness that crops up sometimes)

Mechanically they lock all but a tiny number of things to the grid system, but for some strange reason, they give circles and free-aim radius indicators for things that don't work that way. Perhaps the worst of it was the first time Abby tried using Punch a few episodes ago: Did exactly what she should have, scoped out the move's aiming options before trying and saw that it acted like a radial attack, and then was betrayed by the game UI hiding the fact that it only works on non-diagonal adjacency.

It's presumably done in the name of making the game look more open and approachable and non-technical to new strategy players? But ultimately it's just going to confuse people and create frustration until they dig deeper than they should need to and realize what is and isn't grid-based.

I love Mario Sunshine and have played through it multiple times, and Secret of the Underside is by far the most garbage annoying thing in the entire game by a million miles. Everything about being below that village is broken and completely sucks.

Also the cloaca is the all-in-one everything hole. It is to bodily bird holes as the xbox one wants to be to the home entertainment system.

Looking forward to Ben fighting for this on GOTY

I am waiting the the 5 hour blood bath that will be the GOTY podcast. this year is nuts.

2017 has been unbelievably good for games and honestly deserves a minimum of at least Top 20.

@corvidus@ripelivejam MHXX for switch has been expected for a while and is part of the mainline series, and it was confirmed pretty recently.

Unfortunately, even more recently (literally half an hour ago), there's this: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/e3-2017-capcom-not-bringing-switch-version-of-mons/1100-6450954/

The switch isn't region-locked, so fortunately it'll still be playable, especially for those of us with at least a little japanese understanding. But it feels like they're fucking over their actual fans in the west to avoid giving MH World any console competition. Bleh

@godmil: you don't understand what friendly fire means nor that their names were right above their heads?

I feel like Vinny is the obvious weak link in this team, even if he is entertaining. His lack of directional awareness and poor accuracy is annoying.

Still, fun stream!

When he got so close to his allies it looked to me like the names above their head become a bit less vibrant and even knowing they're there it's hard for me to make them out against the background watching the video. I can't imagine being the one under fire and trying to pick it out, and I'm not even colorblind.

And the friendly fire message doesn't seem to pop up until after he downs them so it ain't much help in the moment either.

Still it's hilarious that Vinny shoots everyone except the one actual enemy standing right next to him. I'd like to have seen that guy's reaction to what was happening.

The problem is that the friendly names appear pretty high above the character model and when the spot where the names are attached to isn't on screen, they appear on the top of the screen with an arrow pointing kinda towards the player, which can be kinda confusing and isn't always easy to notice right away.

Yeah, it's this. The names appearing well above the character and pointing when offscreen is fine when allies are far away, but the fact that it doesn't close in over their heads when they're at point blank can super, super easily make it look like that person doesn't have an ally label at all.

(Though admittedly Vinny's instincts weren't great either, especially since he saw Alex start to approach and should have known he would be coming up outside the building next to him)

They're definitely improving at the game, even if it's slowly. Learning why they need to shoot first if they have a shot, developing squad tactics slightly instead of just running in easily-murdered clusters... good job, guys!

....Aside from Vinny getting disoriented and shotgunning Alex fully in the head and chest before finishing him off, then downing Dan afterwords.

It was hilarious.

I think the challenge hump right now is the ability to figure out where shots are coming from and conveying it to the rest of the crew. Would some suppressive fire help?

In general it's just very, very hard to figure out where shots are coming from in Battlegrounds, unless you're already familiar with how gunshot noise works in arma-like games - the shots themselves and the bullet impact/ricochet can come from different directions and easily become overwhelming - and are also lucky. (Lots of users have also mentioned needing to make changes to their audio setup or drivers or headphones to get it to be properly directional, plus possible issues of it being legitimately inconsistent on the game's part. Hard to say if GB is getting any of these problems themselves.)

That said, it seems like most of the crew simply need to get more used to callouts in general, since they usually forget about compass headings until well after it matters, shouting stuff like "west" and "left" and "where I'm looking" when they see a guy and only giving a number many seconds later after they've cleared their heads.

Ultimately it's still hard to spot long-range shooters if you didn't already have a good idea of where they were, though, so a bigger help would probably just be if they got more used to moving as a group through shadows/cover and got used to acting on reflex. It's totally legit in PUBG to just try to immediately flee (or drop prone) when you're being shot from a genuinely unknown position, even if it will often not work. At the very least, it's usually better than just wiggling around in little circles until you die.

-Dan typically uses triangle on its own which leaves him open to counter attack and is not a very powerful move by itself. Triangle is typically used for finishing a combo started with square. Also, you get a different combo depending on where you finish the combo: square square triangle, square square square triangle, and so on. Each is worth knowing as they all have their uses.

It seems like this (and generally, everything related to how heat moves are used) is Dan's big problem with the combat. He wants to be using heat moves constantly - which is fair, since they're cool, even though it's often more useful to passively just get a big damage boost from stored heat - but he has to wait for their situational activation and return to neutral state, rather than something like a Batman combat system where hitting the counter/special move button instantly cancels whatever you're doing.

It actually makes me wonder if the top right corner of the screen is visible to Dan from wherever they're sitting in the studio, because the Blue Flame heat icon has been seemingly invisible to him throughout this playthrough. It looks very much like he mashes Triangle when he's trying to heat outside of grabs, because maybe he can't see the icon pop-up? Or he's just being impatient and hammering buttons... either way, not waiting for that icon results in him doing really ineffective shit constantly, either lame kicks or just the wasteful basic heats.

Why do some people have to be so douchey in chat? "Ha ha tell them to push the buttons to self-destruct". That's like some middle school telling your friend to hit Alt-F4 over AIM level immaturity. Do you honestly think you're being funny? Thanks for taking something that could be a positive medium for interacting with the Giant Bomb crew and turning it into something that they hardly ever look at anymore. Sorry for bringing negativity into the comments but, auugh, some things about the internet are just so frustrating. I'd expect premium members to be more mature than that.

Self-destruct does not kill the player. It's nothing at all like an alt-F4 troll.

I mean, come on, everyone knows that Krillin is actually by far the most useful and strongest human fighter.

That's absurd. It's like you've never even heard of the legendary Mr. Satan, Hercule, the savior of Earth and strongest fighter in history.
