It's THAN, not THEN!

When I'm on the internet, I usually try not to be a "grammar Nazi," as the kids like to call them. But there's one thing, that no matter how many times I see, it ALWAYS makes me angry. And what is this, you ask?

Well, it's when people use the word "then" when they really mean "than." For example:

Incorrect: I like this game more then that other game.
Correct: I like this game more than that other game.

Incorrect: There are more dogs then cats.
Correct: There are more dogs than cats.

Then is used in the context of time. I went to the park, and then I saw some dogs. You turn the car on, then you drive.

Than is used when comparing things. Pizza is better than broccoli. I'd rather eat broccoli (which I hate) than read people miss use the word then.

So, my question is, WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?! Did you not pay ANY attention during English class in school? Do you just not care? Just typing fast, push the wrong button, and you don't take the time to make sure you used the correct word?

And I CAN'T take it. All it does is make the writer look like an idiot for not knowing the proper grammar, or for not caring.

Now, I'm not going try and say that I use proper grammar all the time, but I don't do anything as glaringly wrong as that (at least I don't think I do).

Anyway, does anyone else get this angry over stupid little things on the internet like this?

It's funny how I'm in an honors English class, yet people still manage to mix these things up. This deserves nothing less than a facepalm.

That's one of the worst.

From what I've seen, complaining about grammar on the internet is one of the most hopeless things you can do...
The results are nowhere to be seen in this dark hole, no matter how many layers of nightvision goggles you have equipped.

I wasn't sure about that, I typed misuse at first, but I wasn't sure if maybe that was some weird/obscure word that meant something else. Whatever.

Hate to break it to you, man, but the Internet is where English goes to die. The kids these days with their dangling participles, misplaced modifiers and apostrophes everywhere they're not needed (and let's not mention sentence fragments and run-on sentences). Public forums have led to the needless suicides of more English teachers than I can count.

@MooseyMcMan:
Oh God, yes. Finally someone has brought this up! It annoys me almost more than anything.

The single thing I find most annoying is should of instead of should have.

But yes, then instead of than is very annoying. It makes me wonder if anyone goes to school anymore. I've often thought it is because, when listening to people talk, than can often sound like then. I've noticed that when Ryan speaks. I'm just glad you've raised awareness of this, well done.

A favourite quote of mine is: "What did the English language drop after you killed it?"

People screwing up "your" and "you're" or "were" and "we're" drives me absolutely nuts.

Your first example may be misidentified somewhat through local dialect error. When I say 'than' it sounds like 'then'. I'm in Cleveland. It's regional sloppiness of speech. I hate it when sportscasters say "  the score  is now 21-14, and that brings the rallying squad WITHIN seven'. No, WITHIN seven would be a 20-14 score , - namely -  SIX behind.
Also, when people say "I'll try AND correct the mistake" It should be  " I'll try TO correct the mistake". I hear that a lot.
