@tobyd81: After reading his page on a King of Fighters wiki, I have added him to the list!
@efesell: Good to know!
@cjduke: I would be very interested in your feelings on P4. I feel like you might enjoy the story stuff more, but I can't speak to what Golden did or didn't do to the game, so I do fear it might get slog-ish, even if it's not as long as game as 5 (I know it took Jeff and Vinny 99 hours, but a friend said Golden "only adds" about 30 hours).
On the flip side, P4 features anime staples like "a bathhouse scene," a school beauty pageant including a bikini part for the girls, and a "crossdressing pageant" for the boys, and I want to say Golden adds a beach sequence too. If I'm being honest, Royal was lower on the "I'd be embarrassed if people saw me playing it" scale than I expected, the worst of that were the couple full animated sequences with the boys in the group ogling Ann (which was bad).
Still, for $20 or less if there's a sale, I'd say at least give it a shot. For as much as parts of 4 have not aged well, there's still a lot of good in that game.
As for the writing chops of 5, I'm not going to sit here and say everything was perfect, the abusive gym teacher probably was the part of the game that felt the shakiest in terms of the game's handling of all its themes. On the other hand, a friend of mine made it sound like Royal got a complete overhaul in the localization. I haven't looked into the specific changes myself, but she made it sound like a lot of this game was basically re-written for Royal (in the west at least), so maybe that was part of it. So I definitely wouldn't say you're off base, I just don't know how comparable the versions of the game we played are, as it could honestly be anywhere from "very" to "not very."
And serious subjects like abuse, attempted suicide, etc, those are the sorts of things that any person's feelings of how well its handled could vary wildly from one person to another, just based on their own lived experiences (I'm going to hazard a guess and say neither of us are experts in those particular subjects). Which is also partly why I'd say the later targets, which deal in relatively less "heavy" subjects feel like they fare better. At least to me.
Still, let me know if you do try 4, I think it'd be a good game to play during the typical summer lull that's likely coming soon.
West Side Story is a classic! I was in a production of it once, in high school. (I didn't have a speaking role).
@colonel_pockets: I'd say thank the game for looking good rather than me! Wish it had a photo mode, but thank you!
@rorie: I had a feeling you'd like this write-up, haha.
Didn't watch the stream but I can only imagine the Vinny perspective is the one to watch.
This game's music sounds like WarioWare.
@cjduke: Yeah, I can't believe I forgot to mention the gambling side of loot boxes.
And Dragon's Dogma definitely has that kinda...weirdo game for weirdos vibe, in some ways. I still hope they do a sequel, with the right budget and everything it could be a big hit like Monster Hunter World.
And thank you!
I know it wasn't actually on your list, and it probably won't be on mine either...but I'm just thinking about that time Thor led us to victory to Apex Legends. What a great, if brief, time it was that we had with that game.
