I played and completed Gex and Grand Theft Auto for the first time this past year. Unfortunately as was highlighted here, they aren't particularly great. Also I've been very impressed by duckstation for PS1 emulation

@justin258: My most basic rule is that I try to get the credits to roll and I always watch the credits. I don't try 100% games or anything. I suppose this might sound weird, but a fighting game, I consider it beat if I beat it with one character, so for a game like say Street Fighter II, that would be fairly quick. But for an RTS game like Command & Conquer, I wouldn't consider it beat until I've finished every faction's campaign.

It's also worth noting there are certain genres of games where the games are usually quite short. I already mentioned fighting games, but side scrolling beat em ups and shoot em ups tend to only take about an hour to complete. Also plenty of the old games you may remember taking you years to complete when you were younger are probably not actually that long, and it's really only their difficulty padding them out. A lot of the NES, Genesis, and TG-16 games I played this year were all 1-2 hours. So I played more than my fair share of "easy wins" to achieve this feat. No real strict schedule, but I might crunch to finish a game if I'm getting close, so it's out of the way. It can be hard to pick a game back up, especially if it's frustrating or not so good, so I sometimes find it's best to just keep pushing forward and sacrifice a few hours sleep to get it done.

@ivdamke:I remember it well. I even thought about talking about it in the preamble, because of how upsetting that whole journalistic movement was to me. Glad you enjoyed it.

@gundato: Yeah, agreed on Vendrick. And that also might be part of why I found Nioh to be so inferior to the Souls games. I'll have to keep that in mind why I eventually play 2.

Artorias love is to be expected, but the amount of it has got me second guessing... No it's you guys who are wrong... In my defense, the top 25 of this series is really hard to rank!

@crisisturtle: It shouldn't surprise me to see some Sinh love, but it does. Glad I could oblige.

@sessh: Vendrick has some neat stuff working behind the scenes too, for every giant soul you hold in your inventory, his defense lowered drastically, and it's something you might not ever notice if you're not looking out for it. Ultimately though, I didn't feel the fight itself wasn't exciting enough to give him a spot though.

@theflamingo352: You might be right about Owl, especially if you're referring to the other fight. I made two promises to myself before making this list, that I would get it done by the time Demon's Souls on PS5 released and that I would defeat every boss before making it. Owl (Father) and Lady Emma are the only two bosses I have not faced in the series, and are my failure to keep that latter promise. Regarding the Allant thing, it's quite permanent.

@cyrusraven: Thanks, and I'm glad at least somebody out there is on the same page!

@sethmode: Thanks! Yeah it's definitely a tricky choice for that reason, but I stand by it as the series is connected to its online components in many ways. Besides, it's often said that lists are really all about #2 anyway

@noobsauce: Can't argue with those choices. I hope you get to play those games though, to me they're the best two!

The game that refused to just end.

My take away from the Joel/Ellie Flashback at the end of the game is that Ellie finally forgave Joel through "forgiving" Abby. Her revenge quest was less about vengeance and more about her being unable to cope with not having the chance to forgive Joel for what he did. So in the end I thought it really wrapped up nicely.

Finally after years of bringing up Bushido Blade in passing, it's finally been played so I can see it. Funny how similar it is to Deadliest Warrior, a game they really didn't like.

@divinekataroshie: It is, Gampeplay was worth .3, Tilt was worth .3, value and graphics were worth .15 (i believe they usually rounded down though, so games would get 8.1 instead of 8.15), and Sound was worth .1. Math checks out for 4.8 on the image. I spent way too much time rating games on Gamespot as a teen to forget.
