MormonWarrior: Best of 2012

List items

  • GAME OF ALL YEARS OKAY HOLY CRAP

  • Creepy, foreboding, and filled with surprising writing, meaningful small decisions, and memorable characters. A really melancholy experience quite unlike anything I've ever played.

  • Apart from some minor structural problems (and an awful ending) Mass Effect 3 delivered on most of what made 2 so incredible and memorable. There's good closure for a lot of characters (maybe a little too clean) and top-notch action. The multiplayer hooked me for quite a while, surprisingly.

  • I was shocked by how much I liked this game. It tells a surprisingly emotional story, looks great, has smooth and rewarding gameplay, and offered a good level of challenge without being frustrating. I made sure to get all of the achievements too.

  • Despite the clunky interface and irritating puzzles, I really liked the story in 999, and VLR doesn't disappoint as a sequel. There's still interface issues and typos are fairly common, but it's still a great story done in a unique way. It's a lot like the mystery novels I love to read.

  • I didn't get why this game was praised at first, but after giving it (a lot of) time, it really sank its hooks into me. Spelunky offers such a rewarding experience that keeps you on your toes, and when I finally beat it I felt very satisfied.

  • Surprisingly enough, the core gameplay of this hooked me even more than Origins, upon which it is heavily based. This is my favorite game on the iPhone as it controls really well, is quick and challenging, and looks/sounds amazing. Can't wait for more!

  • It's a neat, quiet experience that offers a lot of transcendentally beautiful sights and sounds and has a lot of implied metaphors. It's a truly unique experience.

  • I have no frame of reference for Diablo-clone dungeon crawlers, but this is a fun, fairly mindless game to play with friends or alone. I've enjoyed what I've played.

  • I hate stealth in games, so me enjoying Mark of the Ninja really says something about its sharp design and crisp controls. I haven't gotten far into it at all but I can already tell it's something special.
