Far Cry 3

Dear Ubisoft,

I hear you are in the middle of producing Far Cry 3, well, that's good and all, but I hope you will address the many shortcomings of  the previous iteration. Mainly the repetitiveness and lifelessness of the gameplay and game world respectively. Please keep in mind that you need to impress to get gamers to fork over those $60 bucks again. Just my 2 cents.

They're going to introduce Far Cry 3 soon? Never noticed such information. Either way I'm looking forward to seeing how they're planning this one. Far Cry 1 and 2 both have some significant differences to warrant the 3rd to be unpredictable.

I agree Abyssfull. Rumor has it it will remain in Africa (as opposed to Antarctica or another  snowy locale) which could be why it will be out earlier than excpected. FC2 was just too plain jane and devoid of any real excitement. Plus the Map and other navigation tools sucked at best. I don't understand why they would not allow you to map a route to and from a mission. Oh well. I hope things will improve.

P.S:  Gamers have been asking for more realism for a while now, but having my weapon jam and then passing out from Malaria..... not on my wishlist.

I reported this to Ubisoft AND the Cyber Police.

But on topic, I always wanted to try Far Cry 2 but heard so many mixed reviews so I ended up letting it go by. Hopefully Far Cry 3, if it does come out, fixed the problems it had.

@mortiferus: I heard it was going to take place in Africa again...SIGH!! I would give them anothrer chance if the aiming was fixed (there's like a second delay when looking left and right) and the enemies would not attack me every second and at every checkpoint. Also how do you feel about having feral powers like in Instincts?

This and the borked saves! There was a save bug on the 360, (is it still there?) that even though you saved, and it said you did, even showed up, when you reloaded the game it would be there. I lost 7 hours of progress because of this and never went back. Tempted to try it on the PC now though, as it was actually pretty fun.

As for FC3, I wouldn't mind a similar setting to FC2. It delved into African conflicts that while fictional in the game, shit like that is really going on over there. Was rather interesting.

I really hope Ubisoft make the improvements that they need to. I'm one of the people who loves Far Cry 2 but parts of that game were ridiculous. How that game got through testing without someone complaining that you were under attack the entire time i will never know.

I thought Far Cry 2 was brilliant.  A lot of people didn't like it, but the problems they had with it seem like they would be easily fixable.  Assassin's Creed 2 wasn't a radically different game to AC1, but it enjoyed a far more positive reaction overall.  No reason to believe they can't do the same with Far Cry 3.  As I've said before on here:  it's a fine line between a mediocre game and a great game.

No problem with them going back to Africa either.  It's a pretty big and varied place, and it's not like Africa is an overused video game setting by any standard.  It's not like a whole bunch of people are making open-world FPS either.

@Maxszy:

They did fix the bug 6 fucking months after they acknowledged it existed!

I really liked parts of Far Cry 2 but overall it was not a good game. My biggest complaints was the weapons feeling very weak and shit multiplayer.

Still got all the singleplayer achievements for the game though.

Goodbye Malaria, who is it helping really?
Across the map shots, you guys are untrained tribesmen with dodgy AKs, yet you can shoot the eyebrows off a fly at a hundred paces, c'mon sort it out.
More bus terminals for quicker transportation, I know it increases game longevity but it also bores me to death.
And please, give me a chance to go back and get the diamonds or something, I spend ages searching and getting and found at the end of the game -- 99/100%.
Also don't have the dude die at the end, or at least have a way that you can continue -- games like Just Cause and GTA 4 are massive but you can still while away the hours not doing anything in particular.

It's kind of a bummer that it's set in Africa again, I would have liked it to be set in Amazon or something with lush jungle. Africa was a good setting but it's going to be hard to make FC3 look different and not just a clone of FC2 in terms of environment since FC2 covered a few different environments like the savannah, rivers, mountains and jungle. Perhaps also to have a bit more of a central story that isn't brushed away by missions that have you running errands for warlords.

I respectfully disagree with the negative statements made against Far Cry 2 in this thread.

At first, I felt the same way about the game - it was repetitive and boring, held little interest with me, and I think a lot of it was because I didn't really understand the layout of the world at all.  I didn't play it for a few months, then later went back to pick it up.  Not only was I surprised to see that the 360 version still had an online community, but I understood the game much better and the story and objectives started flying by much quicker!  That game is only repetitive if you ALLOW it to be repetitive, and in all honesty, there's more freedom in that game than many that I've played of its kind.

I also thoroughly enjoyed the single player, especially the objective-based games.  There was a very specific feel to the way that game handled.  Some will say the characters were stiff and the general feel wasn't as smooth as other games.  However, it wasn't trying to be other games.  I should also point out that Far Cry 2 offered one of the most in-depth map creators out there, and the community around the game is a very dedicated bunch.  My only real problem with the multiplayer was the way that they handled gun upgrades with that whole "handbook" system.  That was something that would take FOR-EH-VER to unlock everything on.

I would highly suggest that everyone go back and play the game to experience it again.

I was gonna flip a bitch on everyone in this thread for hatin' on my game, but he summed it up well.  Far Cry 2 encourages you to switch things up mission to mission; take a flamethrower and SMG one mission, pick off people with a sniper rifle from afar the next.  The game was not without it's faults but the only thing that cannot be excused about it is the hours of driving you have to do.  The open-ended missions are by design, and if someone is dumb enough to let them get repetitive, they are playing the wrong game.

The problem I had with the game was the malaria, because as I was trying to scout out enemy bases to find the best way to take them out, I always had the malaria in the back of my head, propelling me to screw tactical advantage and just run and gun because in 40 minutes I would be needing more pills. Get rid of that and I'm game for a new one.

My main gripes with Far Cry 2 were the poor story and the endless travelling in cars which can only travel at about 40mph. Also why was it called Far Cry 2? I suppose a cynic would say it was a cheap marketing trick but I doubt that that many people were familiar with the Far Cry name. Hey at least the fire was good.

blacklabeldomm I'm not so sure the original's feral powers would fit in FC3 if they kept the semi-realistic world feel of part two. Maybe some malaria induced madness or maybe something heat related, but it would likely be to gimmicky.

@ jakob187 I am actually playing it now, and while I will say it's not as terrible as a lot of the critics say, it is not as enjoyable nor innovative as the first. I am willing to give Ubi a break since sophmore games are always tricky to produce, except AC2 that is.

kmdrkul Its not that people are dumb enough to let the game become repetitive, it's that there are only so many different ways to take out a target, be it a convoy or an assassination. No one on this thread has said the game is terrible, just that it is boring and tedious at times. I happen to think FC2 is a great game though it's clearly flawed and hope Ubi listened tot he public like they did in the case of Assassin's Creed 2.

  1. @mortiferus:
FC2 was one of my favorite games of 2009.  I played it mostly on the 360, though I own a Steam copy as well.  The gun play was great.  I loved the safe house mechanic; having my own personal space within the game, in this case, a room full of guns.  The score, by Nimrod Studios, was haunting and is on my ipod to this day.  I disagree with your assessment that the environment was lifeless.  It was positively filled with flora and fauna.  I also thought that the systems for and the support of user generated content in multiplayer were the most advanced of any cross platform title that I have seen.  The mutliplayer had its issues but I saw some truly amazing stuff come out of the community in that game.

I played the shit out of Far Cry 2 and I loved it.

That being said, I will agree that the game had many weaknesses that I hope will be improved upon in the next version:

1. But I'm on your side!
So, you're a merc, doing odd jobs for two opposing factions in a civil war.  Unfortunately, it doesn't matter what mission you're on or what faction you happen to be serving.  If the soldiers from either faction see you, they start shooting, no questions asked.  What on first glance seems realistic reveals itself to be simplisitc from an engineering stand point; a narrative conceit that explains away the fact that they did not include any dynamic system of loyalty, ala Assasins Creed, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. , etc.
2. A beautiful world, devoid of people
Yes, they built a beautiful world.  I spent many a night wandering through that jungle with nothing but a silenced pistol tensely gripped in my hand, a machete in my teeth.  One thing missing though; the people.  For most of the game, you might as well be wandering through a nuclear wasteland.  Throughout the course of the FC2, the player has minimal contact with civilian NPCs.  There is a third faction in the game that is meant to stand in for 'the people' caught in the middle of the war.  But the missions and narrative of the 'underground' faction seem rushed and tacked on, a substitute for something else that could have been a lot more deep, frought with conflict and consequence.  What I want is Tears of the Sun type scenarios, where you come across villages being massacred and you have the choice to either stop it, join in the killin, or stay in the shadows and let nature take its course.  Also, include an alignment system based on those choices.
3.  The buddy system
The buddies in the game only show up after you've been shot and you're bleeding out.  They will pull you out of the fire and cover you long enough for you to heal and get back in the fight.  Other than eventually betray you, that's all they do.  Oh yeah, they also get shot and force you into the only moral choice of the game; save 'em, leave 'em, or give 'em a mercy kill.  Not bad, but I'd kinda like a buddy who will actually go on the mission with me, maybe help me take our a half dozen mercs Sam Fisher style cobefore the shit hits the fan.  The shortcomings of the buddy system really highlight the absence of any kind of cooperative mode.  Online coop would have been sweet.  Am I the only one who looked longingly at all of those technical trucks and wondered why I couldn't get a gunner or have someone drive me around?   Also, not a single moter vehicle in this game comes equiped with a rear view mirror.  The only time you know guys are chasing you is when you start to get shot.
4. Crank up the Creedance
What this game really needs is some helicopters, in both single and multiplayer.  I realize that the vast enironment might not seem as big from the air and that flying around could break the game in so many ways but you can't have modern jungle warfare without a little air support.  In the single player,    it would be fun just to be chased by helicopters and take them down with RPGs and Carl Gs.  Than hang gliders are fun but not good enough.
5. Support the community

As I said, FC2, even on xbox, had a very decent multiplayer community that converged around the map making tools.   This demonstrated a great untapped potential for user generated content on consoles.  It seems to me, this happended despite Ubisoft's disinterest and lack of support.  The main reason, I think, that developers and publishers have been so ambivalent on user generated content, is that they have not figured out a way to effectively monetize.  At this point in the console life cycle, the sales model that has been almost uniformly adopted is that of pushing $20-100 worh of canned DLC.  Instead of seeing custom content as a threat to this order, the developers should find a way to tap the user creativity and innovation, to somehow encourage that post-release supplemental income.

@Scotty_Gun: You nailed it on #2!!! That is what I was alluding to earlier when I said it was lifeless. I certainly agree some civilians hidden in the jungle or other remote parts of the game world would have been awesome, but I wanted some interactivity with the natives, be given the choice to help or round them up for profit for example. I would have also liked to have seen some missions along the lines of escorting people to the border ( in addition to the passport deliveries) or defending a village against a raid, etc...

In regards to the animals, yes there are some dear here and there but this is Africa. Where are the lions, crocs, rhinos, the exotic birds etc... not saying they need to have every animal but some nasty critters would have been nice. It would help keep you on your toes plus would have opened the door to money making  schemes, i.e capturing rare animals or pelts, etc...

I also think tree climbing would have been another great mechanic to have had for ambushes or just scouting the terrain.   And a bad ass long bow for silent or rambo-esque explosive kills, that was one of the biggest let downs to me.

I did not like the rigid save system. A nice "Camp" here option would have been great (as long as no enemies were around of course) the safe houses could have been expanded on to include civilian missions.

Like I have said before FC2 was a great game but it was flawed. Let's hope UBI is listening...

It would not be very hard to make Farcry 3 a much better game than 2, but to think that people play tested Farcry 2 and found no problems with the ninja jeeps, quickly respawning checkpoints , some what clunkly movement , empty world and poor attempts at trying to bring realism to the game is very strange.

I enjoyed Farcry 2 after playing it for a while but starting that game and getting used to the way it does things is quite frustrating and certain things remain frustrating.

I liked Farcry 2 but it was not without its flaws. Stealth was near impossible, the open world was to big and boring, and I am in freaking Africa why aren't there any dangerous animals to lure onto unsuspecting baddies.
Seriously how sweet would it of been to piss off a Rhinoceros and get it to charge an enemies campsite? Or how about getting a bunch of baddies to chase you across a river only to have them eaten by crocodile?

I really thought FC2 was brilliant.   The driving and malaria never bothered me. The weapon system was a little weird, but I got used to it. I liked the NPC stuff in towns and safehouses -- they just need some more non-enemies in the open world.

I had 3 complaints:
 - Checkpoint enemies are ALL immediately hostile and respawn far too often
 - No predatory animals

The only game I can even compare to it is STALKER and I really like them both. I'm interested in more open shooters like them. I understand why most FPS games are so linear, but I would love this kind of freedom in the Half-Life world.

Ubi did a great job of responding to the complaints about Assassin's Creed and I believe they will do the same here.

@MysteriousBob: No thanks, I don't speak French and I am not a big fan of the Canadian winter. I'll keep my brilliant insights in the US of A.

As long as they keep the AWESOME map maker, I will always be interested in another Far Cry.

The gameplay in Far Cry 2 however never felt right, and I found the campaign dreadfully boring.

That my friend would be very cool. Very cool indeed.

I really liked Far Cry on the PC. I got stuck on the X360 version. Just too hard for me.  I'd love a new FC that follows the 1st game.

I also really liked FarCry 2.
There was a certain immersion to it's more mundane aspects. It's lack of "epicness" and over-the-top characters put me "in the world" more than most games ever do.

I also had a legit "holy shit" moment in that game when I learned how beneficial it could be to utilize the waterways instead of the roads.

I loved everything about Far Cry 2 except for the part where I actually had to play the game. The game mechanics introduced, the health system, the day/night cycle, the villain who seems uncannily similar to Brad Pitt- all of those things were awesome. However I just did not enjoy the shooting at all, everything look a bullet or two too much to kill, and with the X360 version of the game I experienced a recurring glitch where enemies not even facing me were still hitting me which really marred my enjoyment of the game.

That is not to say i am not super hyped for the next Far Cry, regardless of how much of a disappointment the last one was.
