Having only just played SO recently, YES THIS. I've never been the biggest fan of Insomniacs games but SO is so much fun. It's actually so much fun that the general mission design is kind of a bummer. A lot of the missions are just frustrating mission defence. If they ever do a sequel, they need to remove that part. It just felt complicated but half baked.
Well this certainly came out of nowhere. 2018 also looks like it's shaping up to be another great year for games (if you ignore all the loot box stuff).
Sega have some of the greatest IP so I'm glad to see them finally follow up. Probably too much to ask for a new Skies of Arcadia though.
Lootboxes/microtransactions being shoehorned into full price games. Publishers simply want to have their cake and eat it too. It shouldn't be a large upfront cost with lootboxes tied to progression. Want to have lootboxes? Go ahead and make your game F2P. EA make nearly a billion dollars a year just from Fifa's shitty card packs alone is a fucking joke and we're happily paying them for it. Give publishers an inch and they'll take a mile. The fact that EA are making so much money from actually very little work should mean that they take riskier moves. They could spend 10 million on a smaller, riskier title with a small team and be no worse off but they'd seem rather keen on doubling-down on being shit.
Every year I buy these because they're great fun to play around Christmas with the family or with friends throughout the year but the line up of games this time around is by far the weakest. I'd love a new You Don't Know Jack but it feels like they'd rather make a new Fibbage or Quiplash.
EA represents everything wrong with the games industry.
This right here. I know it was stupid that for several years they kept being voted the worst company in the world but you would've thought that would've been their wake up call but instead they double-down on being shitty. They shit all over Mass Effect, they basically own the market when it comes to sports titles so they can do as little as they please, they refuse to give customers what they want (Skate 4) and they take some of their best and most beloved developers and shut them down.
I feel absolutely gutted for Amy Hennig and the rest of Visceral. You're now apart of an exclusive club along with Maxis, Bullfrog, Mythic, Origin, Blackbox, Pandemic, Westworld and a few others. In the past 5 years, EA have shut down 7 studios (now including Visceral). So basically, if you're a game studio, don't even think about letting EA buy you as it's only a matter of time before they shut you down. You might get lucky and last 18 years like Maxis or you might be like Pandemic and get shut down within a year.
@burncoat: Destiny 2 coming to PC this month is probably why it's out this early. When PoE was shown off earlier this year, I think most people didn't actually expect it this year. It's such a huge update and it's one that's actually getting attention from mainstream gaming websites that typically ignore it despite having a large install base.
I didn't even realise it was going to be on Earth. It's a smart decision. I imagine this'll get quite a few new people coming into the game. Maybe even @Rorie will be able to play it as the requirements are quite easy for new players/people who haven't played much.
