I'm glad they didn't just run to a publisher, and I think this is really the best case scenario given the situation. Granted, the project should've been better managed, but it's not like game development is an exact science.
It might be cynical to say, but I sort of wish they did go to a publisher. This could end up a really big mess, not just for Double Fine, but other developers who want to go a similar route. The game should have been managed better like you said, which does not require exact science, just some restraint and foresight light any project. At this point this game has to deliver, the expectations are so high now.
Also, when is this game supposed to be out? Mid 2014? Maybe everyone will have forgotten about all this by the time it ships.
Still getting a PS4. While I'm happy for the people who want an XB1, I still trust Sony more than Microsoft at this point. Only thing I'm super bummed about, is not being able to play Killer Instinct. Here's hoping it's a timed exclusivity deal.
KI is being published/is owned by Microsoft. Doesn't really seem like a fit for a PC release to me, but I guess could happen technically.
I still don't believe that it was really a 60 minute time limit, that seems so stupid. They know PS+ offers 60 minute demos of the full game already, it had to be a bit more than that.
Unless they really thought that 60 minutes of the game for ANY game and not just some, like PS+, was really that great of a benefit. You'd have to be in so many families to get a library of collective parent accounts that had different games to make that a real benefit.
I just talked myself out of being annoyed about the 180. As long as there are download codes available for every release at retail, the only loss is family sharing (which may have been a glorified demo service anyways).
If I had to guess I think if you are offline you'll need the disk in to start up. If you are online I don't see it being needed assuming they still register the game to your account.
Wait, am I missing something. I thought that since they removed the DRM requirements you will not be able to play without the disc in the drive. The games won't register to your account anymore, right? I thought that was the whole point of their DRM before. Require codes to be redeemed which would lock the game to your account and prevent resale.
@jazzycola: Its a different thing if they offered a Planetside 2 PS4 bundle that came with the game preloaded and some in game currency. That would be more similar to the bundles they offer now. Something of value that the consumer would have to otherwise pay for if not for the bundle.
I like the idea of pushing the free games, either in advertising or straight on the box. Even go as far as to advertise the perpetually free games on PS+ and include a month free. But give consumers the choice to download the free software or not.
You get the same advertising effect of saying on the box "Every PS4 comes with Three FREE games", since they are free games that anyone who has a PS4 can access. I don't see the need to pre-load the games, especially since they require internet access to play anyways.
I don't think putting a F2P game on the system pre-installed is a good idea though, it makes it look like you are trying to push the consumer to spend money on something they may or may not want. If they included some free money to spend in that game it might work out better. But to a lot of people it'll just look like bloatware since its something that everyone gets for free, the benefit is fairly small.
There would need to be some benefit beyond, hey you don't have to download this to play it.
