Game of The Year 2014 Users Choice

I have not had time to finish most the games on this list but two of them help explain that to a degree. Diablo III and Smite are both endless in nature, one for its skill ceiling and the other for its repeatable design. The rest of my list are games I enjoyed for however long I was able to spend time with them. I have intentions to revisit each of them.

List items

  • Hideo Kojima's next entry in the MGS series. Short and sweet, but excellent in every detail hidden in all the corners of this game. I am extremely excited for the next full entry in the series. Releasing the games on Steam is a great step forward and makes the future of Konami games very interesting to me.

  • "What if batman was open world?"

    - "Like Arkham City?"

"Sure, but where batman kills people...with a sword."

    - "Uh, Batman doesn't do that."

"We have the LoTR license right?"

    - "Sorta..."

    "Done, print it"

    Ahem.

  • Beautiful world, great music, and a strategy based combat system that is fun to tinker with. I was initially somewhat cold on this game and specifically the soundtrack. As such I have only spent a handful of hours with the game to date.

I have listened to the Bastion soundtrack easily hundreds of times compared to the 15 or so hours of the game proper I actually played.

The Transistor soundtrack did not "Wow" me out of the gate like Bastion's and I put both away to sit for awhile.I returned to the Transistor soundtrack recently and, separate from the comparison between the music of each game, it is truly great; just in its own way. I look forward to completing Transistor soon and continuing to enjoy the soundtrack much like I do Bastion's.

  • Interesting game with very piecemeal battles that are short and easy to pick up and put down. I have found myself playing much more of this game than I expected.

  • Great music, fun and addictive game play, fast restarts and a premise that is silly but entertaining. I lost the majority of a Saturday with the "one more run" mentality, it was great.

  • Faster than Dota 2 and with more explicitly explained mechanics, I have enjoyed my hours with Smite. I have also hated my hours with Smite. You know, MOBAS... The WASD control scheme also gives my mouse wrist a break from all the click click clicking of a standard Dota match. I enjoy Dota 2 as well, but I find Smite much more approachable. More hours to come I am sure.

  • The best Amazon Instant game out there, expect for perhaps Dynasty Warriors 8. "Fixing" the loot system has resulted in the addictive loot treadmill that Diablo pioneered way back when.

  • A surprisingly well written game with interesting mechanics. Kickstarting during the Kickstarter boom granted me a boxed copy with excellent production value. I look forward to truly delving into the depths of this game.

  • More Dark Souls. Even as a more casual fan of the series I can tell that the first game was superior for that unnamed "feel". Despite that, the environment is still fancinating and fun to explore. Also, dying...still lots of dying. So its still Dark Souls.

  • I enjoyed XCOM: Enemy Unknown and Within and wanted to explore the genre more. The original games are tough to fight through the UI so Xenonauts felt like the next best thing. Its punishing and obscure, but rewarding and satisfying.
