Best of 2011

So here it is, the end of 2011 already! Good God, how did it come so fast? Well regardless of all the BS, here is a list I decided to put together to celebrate it all. RPG was a big draw for most, but how about some of the obscure genres, such as the newly formed "Insanely Funny" genre established by Saints Row 3?

List items

  • Outstanding in all ways. From the atmosphere, to the level design, to the sheer beauty of the combat, I was hooked. I can't remember the last time I sunk 90+ hours into any one game. I would say this may be by favorite game ever, right next to Symphony of the Night...

  • Exactly what the doctor ordered. a funny, insane game that does the impossible. A near clone of Grand Theft Auto, but so flawlessly revised that it topples it in all ways. One thing rarely talked about is how amazing the map system is. Now you don't even have to look at it! You can drive around and watch the arrows in the part of the game that matters the most, the playing field. Love.

  • Amazing open world zombie game I thought I'd hate before I picked it up. The combat is what Skyrim should have followed. Simply gratifying and gruesome. The island was a treasure to explore...

  • A over-hyped, but still great title. The combat is the only weak spot in an otherwise fantastic RPG filled with gorgeous scenery, fun missions, and a revised leveling system I had some joy with.

  • One of the most unique puzzle games in existence. The style alone made it a big reason why it's on my list, regardless of the insane difficulty at the end of the game. The story, voice acting and illustration style blew me away. Never have I felt I could relate to the experiences of a game character before. Brilliant!

  • A game that many reviewers threw to the side, but one that hooked me right away. Sure, it's a somewhat repetitive platformer, but it's one of the best around. The graphics and animation are gorgeous, and the level design is outstanding. I found myself playing from beginning to end nonstop. A perfect example of an overlooked title that needed more hype.

  • Quite simply the perfect simulation racer. 3 was great, but this one is exactly what I've wanted for years! Imagine showing this one to yourself ten years ago. I think heads would explode.

  • Fun, open and unique. A great game, that not too "new" in feel is super solid and rewarding.

  • Another overlooked title that spewed out so much style that it needs a second chance. A bit clunky, yes, but funny and weird. Something you won't see in many games out there.

  • A 10? no. An 8? yes. Here's another over-hyped title that falls a little flat, but still engages enough to make in the top ten. Now give us better graphics already Nintendo! Remember when 64 bits was the top of the line? Well let's do a little better now, and we'll all be in love, and games like this will hit the #1 position.
