This is bad for games, bad for people who play games, and bad for anyone else in your dorm/apartment building trying to use the internet. I have my computer in my home office with an ethernet cable running to my Nvidia shield in the living room and streaming games to my TV still feels like garbage (subjectively) so I can't imagine using anything less. I'm also saying this as someone who has Google Fiber in my home.
Now I keep seeing the argument that this isn't for people who already play games but I've seen people who almost never play games pick up controllers and say that something feels like shit way more often than people who play games all the time.
Brad unironically saying that it takes about 30 hours for RDR2 to really dig its claws into you while simultaneously criticizing people for not getting into the game in 10-12 hours is a perfect crystallization of how these discussions go every year.
RDR2 is like the Witcher 3 of this year in terms of this comment section (makes the list despite some staff members actively disliking it but wasn't #1 so everyone's still pissed). Dan being disappointed is more than enough reason for it to make the "most disappointing" list. Since he was hired you could count on him mentioning RDR at least once a month with nothing but praise. I haven't enjoyed a Rockstar game since GTA2 but watching his opinion of the game change over the months was genuinely depressing. We've all wanted to like a game from our favorite series but been soured on it.
In response to all the "Jeff is cynical and doesn't even bother giving games a chance" comments: this isn't Gamespot circa 2005 where every game has to be played to completion to have an opinion on it. The fact that GB staffers can play games the way regular people do is one of my favorite things about the site (I think Dan, Alex, and Brad are the only ones who actually finished the RDR2 campaign). As I've gotten older if I don't like a game, I'll just stop playing it. Jeff is a man in his 40s and I think he's pretty dialed in on what he likes and can tell if he's going to like something or not. I would much rather hear his opinion on CoD because he actually cares about it unlike most other staffers.
And to the people saying "lol how can you trust him when CoD is his #1" and that's just ridiculous. I know that CoD has become a bit of a meme over the years and it's certainly not as revered as it was but Black Ops 4 is by far the best release since Black Ops 2 in 2012 (which made Jeff's list that year). I find myself having very little interest in slow paced story-centric games so I'm glad there are still people in the "yo gameplay is pretty cool" camp.
I can't believe that in a year where 50% of categories were eliminated that one of the ones that made the cut was Best Style. I don't think anyone has ever been on the same page as far as that category goes.
