Balancing modules across three different game modes in Hades' Star is clearly not an easy task. So it's not really a surprise that the Hades' Star dev wanted to flesh out a separate game from Hades' Star that takes its most obvious cues from the Blue Star mode in Hades' Star (a short 5-minute PVP battle royale). There's a splash of Clash of Clans tossed in for good measure, as well as different types of battleships you can bring in to a match - each with its own special abilities. I've been participating in the open beta for a good chunk of the year and while I'm enjoying it, I'm not spending *too* much time with it, since there'll be a progress wipe when the game goes live. There's a lot of promise, though. Having gotten my top 50 Blue Star distinction in Hades' Star, I can see this game eating up some of the time I would traditionally devote to running Blue Stars in a given day.
Stripped down dungeon crawling at its absolute finest.
I'm absolutely astonished this game completely slipped past me when it was released on Steam last year. Yeah, it came out right as the pandemic was really starting to hit, so that probably didn't help. I didn't even realize it existed until I saw the trailer on the Nintendo Indie showcase and grabbed it that day. This sad and slow-moving idle/adventure game is so incredibly my shit that I can't stop thinking about it.
Big Vampire Lady.
Not quite as flashy as MHW, but as someone who was hankering for some more Monster Hunter last year, this is scratching that itch. It's cool to see some of the design and lessons from MHW make their way into a Switch version of the series. (It also still led to me reinstalling MHW so I could play more Iceborne.)
This would be much, much higher on my list if the devs weren't dragging their feet on fixing the ability for players to stream the game from another computer. My laptop, for whatever reason, is dismal at running this game, while my desktop has zero issues. I loved what I played of it so far, but I'd rather focus on games that didn't just make me sad every time I tried to play them.
Quake got released on a bunch of platforms this year, which means I can put it on my top 10 list.
I'm 50/50 on whether this actually hits in 2021. If it gets pushed, that'll probably be for the best. Two SMT games in one year is maybe a little too much SMT for me.
Every year, Hades' Star makes the case for being my game of the year in terms of sheer amount of time spent with it. 2021 is no exception. I've been playing this game since launch and even when I think I might be coming to the end of my time with it, something happens to keep me in there.
This year, it was joining up with some players organizing an alternate version of White Star matches called Drone Wars, where you're *only* allowed to spam modules that produce drones.
Also, after some weird changes to how the Blue Star scoring works, I managed to get top 50 in a Blue Star season. What's remarkable was that I managed to do this without cheating (e.g., deliberately removing modules from my ships so I'd match up against weaker players).
Yeah, yeah, it's coming out in 2022 (maybe) but the demo left such a great impression on me, I'd be remiss to not mention it.
