My favorite racing game is the original Need for Speed Most Wanted that I played on the 360 with the ranking ladder, the wild FMV, the cop chases, the open world with weather cycle - just everything about it was perfect for what I hope to get out of a racing game. Forza Horizon and Burnout Paradise have nailed aspects of it, and Need for Speed has tried to do some of that again, but nothing has ever nailed it like that first Most Wanted game.
GTFO, Prodeus, and Age of Darkness I played a bunch of in early access, and Hell Let Loose I've been playing for a couple years now - it's hard to think of it as a 2021 game. Anyways I didn't include them due to the wiki release dates not showing 2021 in the dropdown. During the steam winter sales I got Inscryption, Deathloop, Death's Door, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Echos of the Wild but I haven't gotten to play any of them yet - If I had played them, my top 10 list might be radically different.
I thought Hitman 3 was a lock as my GOTY for sure until December rolled around when I played Psychonauts 2 and it completely swept me off my feet. What a game.
Also, I'm making my own hottest mess category, and I'm awarding it to Battlefield 2042. Battlefield has been my go-to franchise for nearly 2 decades, I own and have played every entry, and I'm straight up embarrassed I paid $90 for this trainwreck of a game.
There was a lot of pc or other console overlap with some of these games, so I'll just leave this with the first thing that comes to mind for my list of fondest memories of ones that I actually played on the OG xbox.
I got Battlefront 2 for my birthday that year and was utterly consumed with it for months. Me and my buddies would do LANs for that. Of course Halo was obviously the game we LAN'd the most, but I was shocked but how much we ended up playing battlefront 2.
Well, the plan is to knockout Deathloop, Disco Elysium, and and Horizon Zero Dawn next... (with about a dozen other games I should be finishing first). But Halo comes out this week so I'm just figuring I won't get around to finishing anything anytime soon
I think the gameplay (it really clicked with me) is stronger in Doom Eternal, but as a complete package, Titanfall 2 just absolutely slaps on all cylinders. The story, characters, set pieces, and environments are all top notch, so I gotta go with that one
It's tough, the gameplay in Eternal is really a fantastic achievement that leans heavily into a particular gameplay style that clicks with me. In that particular facet I guess I would say it's "better" because it would be so hard to go back to 2016 after playing eternal and not having that increased game fidelity.
However I mirror the sentiments of others that the story is kinda flat and alot of the ancillary stuff isn't as good. Doom 2016 was a revelation and it's simplicity was so good. It didn't reach for the sky and in turn it doesn't miss the mark literally anywhere. It's closer to a perfect game than eternal, even though it doesn't set its sights as high as Eternal did.
My vote is going Eternal for the gameplay but hot damn, 2016 is about as close to a perfect FPS game as there is
