Really terrific post! I think the Halo games might have my favorite controller scheme in terms of feel. I’ve always used the one with punch on B, reload on right bumper, and grenade on left trigger. These three elements match Halo’s gameplay really well for me. Hitting B feels appropriate to throwing out my Spartan’s elbow, reloading with right bumper matches the animation of lifting the gun on the right side of the screen and reloading, and the left trigger grenade matches the left handed grenade throw in-game.

Weirdly though, I’ve never used a control scheme like this outside of Halo. It just fits that series well, though interestingly enough lots of people swear by different control schemes for those games.

Destiny is another good example of a game that feels outstanding on a gamepad (aside from menu navigation) due to how punchy its combat is. These days I play on PC with mouse and keyboard, which makes the combat feels snappier, but it doesn’t carry the same tactile feel that you get with a gamepad.

This is a great idea! Fun read, looking forward to more. My family had an N64 when I was young but somehow Super Mario 64 never made its way into that library. We had F-Zero X though, so all was good.

@manburger: Thanks! I get why it would be divisive for sure. It ends in a pretty interesting place so I'm really curious to see where they go next and how they might further fit things into the larger Resident Evil canon.
