There is a pretty huge difference between quirky pixie girls and crazy/bipolar ones in movies and IRL. the quirky pixie will take you to see their stand up routine at an open mic (or in a movie their ukelele band). The crazy one will make out with her friend (boy/girl) then yell at you then make up with you later in sexy ways (in a move this would be possibly doing it on the street on the way home or more likely in a car).
Ive dated 2 of each, long term, and i'm still with the last quirky one, we have been together for a really long time now.
The crazy ones are way more work you and they seem to gain all their necessary sustenance from attention, but and its a really big but, for like a significant period of time, its never boring, ever, there is no down time.. If shes moody then there's drama and if shes up its 24/7 fun.
Quirky pixie on the other hand is way more even keeled they are just generally normal girls with non-traditional hobbies and a bit more uniqueness in comparison to "regular girls". You still get regular girl problems but they most assuredly aren't crazy girl problems.
I only have one guess why the trope of crazy girl is loved by the academy, thats because acting as an actual crazy person is probably kinda hard. and most movie roles people are playing likeable characters or 1 note characters, they might feel like they need to reward actors who bring to life more nuanced characters.
