Games That Could Have Been Great, But Aren't

Its a real shame when a good idea is taken down by shoddy execution, or vice-versa. This list is of a few games that just aren't as good as they should have been.

List items

  • The underlying concept of this game, that the Nazi's made it into America, is a great premise for a game. Unfortunately that is the only good thing about the game. Awful graphics, a shoddy framerate, dreary combat design, zero character and plot development and really obviously timed set pieces do not do justice to what this game could have been.

  • A video game based on evolution? Colour me there? There is no better way to express the complexity and beauty of the evolutionary process. Only problem is, Spore has nothing to do with evolution. Rather it portrays a form of stepped creationism. So Will Wright took an already widely misunderstood idea and proceeded to confuse it even more. On top of that, I at least didn't find the underlying gameplay of the different stages very fun (except for the cell stage, which would have been a fun little flash game).

  • There are a lot of good ideas in here, but most of them never come together into a cohesive, engaging experience. The pinnacle of this is an ending which at first appears to be a stroke of genius, if a tad implausible. Then, when they give control back to the player, it becomes fantastically disappointing.

  • the game that was in the designer's heads is obviously an epic sprawling quest full of ideas and cleverness. the actual game is buggy and ugly. Further, it mishandles many of those great ideas in ways that suggest that the designers didn't really know what they were doing.

  • Sometimes the action in this game is as thrilling as the movies that it apes, but some of the graphics are very last-gen, and the camera freaks out in enclosed spaces, i.e. everywhere in the game. The definition of this list.

Spore didn't have anything to do with creationism. The idea was create your creature however you want it. That was the idea from the first time they showed off the game. The only saving grace of Spore WAS the creature creator and had you evolved naturally you would have even less to do. I spend a lot of times designing games (need to learn how to program beyond Game Maker) and not that that MEANS I know what I'm talking about but the challenges of designing a semi-realistic evolution based game where you don't have direct control over the environment or the organisms evolution are daunting. First example, not having your species die out.

Far Cry 2 was missing something I could never put my finger on. Could have used more animals. I didn't see any zebras? until like 10 hours in when I hit one with my car.

@gorkamorkaorka: I've put a lot of thought into how such a game would work, and I know it has challenges. However, Will Wright used the word evolution one too many times when discussing Spore. If you look at what you are actually doing in the game, it is more or less straight-up creationism. That would be fine if they had never mentioned evolution in the run-up to the game, but they did and here we are.

Anyway, the work that went into building the creature creator could have just as easily gone into some sweet-ass evolutionary-simulation nonsense.

By the way, I recently became a fellow gamemaker-er. How long have you been using it? Any pro-tips?

I honestly loved the StrangleHold game but I agree with your other choices.
