Despite my near-constant bitching of Dan's playstyle, this has been one of my all time favorite GB series. I sincerely hope y'all continue with Yakuza.

I'm going to be incredibly bummed if Vinny ends up spoiling himself due to Dan's negativity at the end there.

I'm only a third of the way through, but watching Dan play is nauseating. YOU HAVE MORE THAN ONE ATTACK, DAN.

I wouldn't even care if he didn't whine and moan whenever he is stopped for even half a second from doing his exact same thoughtless combo. Dan, if you want to just do the same attack without consequence, play Dynasty Warriors or Batman.

Don't read this if you don't want to see picky and pointless whining.

I love this series to death, but is anyone else annoyed when dan does the exact same combo for the entire episode? Square, Square, Triangle. With the dance style. Over and over and over and over.

It's not like it's some super-deep DMC-level combat system, but come on, how is it even possible you didn't accidentally hit square another time EVEN ONCE? Or you didn't feel the need to experiment at all? I am honestly baffled at how someone can consistently pressing the exact same button sequence without any alterations for almost two hours. Not to mention the ground spin you activate with literally a single extra square press is literally just a better version of the standing spin- it's faster and combos fallen enemies too.

This isn't me trying to act like a l33t gam3r, but I didn't have any trouble with the end fights. Honestly I thought Sera and some of the tournament fights were harder. I didn't even end up using any recovery items for Kiryu's final fight- and I played on hard. Maybe it's because I was maxed on stats and leveled up the 4th style a bunch? But I never grinded. Just did substories and whatnot.

Different strokes I guess. To me, Yakuza 2 had the biggest spikes in difficulty of any of the games (discounting that one boss in 1 which isn't difficult, it's just cheap). By the end of 2 I had completely run out of my full stock of staminans and the ending fights were serious ballbusters.

Predictions:

- Dan will get needlessly frusrated with the final sections.

- The whole crew will crap on the ending because they won't remember or understand why the characters chose their respective paths.

- Alex will probably insist on a side story episode before the finale, ruining the momentum for everyone, and confusing the details for Vinny and Dan next week.

It's fun to watch Vinny, who hasn't even touched this series, have a better grasp of heat mechanics than Dan, who has played for 21 parts. Would've liked to see more than one of those two-person combo heat moves.

Edit: I stand corrected. Thanks to Vinny, we saw more than one. Cool beans.

I'll keep this incredibly vague since I can't spoiler on mobile (or at least don't know how to, if it's possible).

I agree with you 100%. I also anticipated what you described, and not getting it was my biggest disappointment in what might've otherwise been my GOTY so far. It just seems like such an obvious thing to me that I was left confused and frustrated by what had and HADN'T happened.

@maleel:

Spoilers Galore. Beware.

I'd chalk that up to there still being like a decade between the two games. If anything, I admire the dev's restraint (a restraint that is partially broken by having both characters in their signature outfits by the end- ugh). I think you can tell well enough where things are headed for Majima simply by the lengths he goes to work for Shimano again, who, to any normal person, seems like a real jerk. I think it was done pretty well overall.

That said, I see what you mean, and I still feel a twinge of disappointment for not seeing "THE" moment, the breaking point. It's the same kind of disappointment I have for MGSV. I just wanna see a guy go crazy, y'know? But I digress. Overall, handled pretty well, even if I didn't get the fanwank I wanted.

*does a full combo of damage to the boss then immediately keeps attacking instead of backing off for even like two seconds*

*gets punished for it*

@vhdblood:

You are incorrect. There definitely is important stuff gated behind the club and real estate minigames. I agree that they shouldn't bother since it's clear that Dan doesn't enjoy the actual GAMEplay, but for anyone who understands and enjoys the combat, there are very cool rewards for progressing those sidestories.
