I was one of the early adopters who paid full price and tried playing when absolutely no one else was ever online... I'm not complaining, I'm just saying that because of that experience, I completely understand why he did this, and I commend him for it. It's exactly what was needed in order for Gun Monkeys to have any chance whatsoever of being successful (as a game, not financially). I haven't played the game in a while, but hopefully it is now doing better due to the changes, because it had potential.

My main issue is that even with this price drop, I think the price is still too high. There just isn't enough to the game to justify anything higher than that, and it kind of gets old pretty quickly regardless. The price should be under $5 and come with an extra copy, or at the very least should have some type of single player component. Just my opinion.

Fantastic and in-depth post. However, I am still not getting one. At least, not yet. And believe me, it's not from a place of hate... I have bought and owned every single Nintendo console when they first came out, own multiple game boys, DSs, stupid peripherals (I even have a goddamn e-reader for god's sake) and more. This is the first Nintendo console that I didn't buy at launch and frankly, doesn't really even interest me that much. I think a huge reason is I am much more into PC gaming now than I ever have been. But another main reason is I am frankly just underwhelmed with Nintendo's hardware and its decisions since the start of the Wii era. I know part of your argument is that horsepower doesn't really matter. And to an extent, I agree with you, but it also DOES matter to at least be powerful enough to be on par with other systems for the foreseeable future. Sure, Wii U is OK right now, at this one moment, but it's clear as day that it really can't do much beyond what a 360 or PS3 can do right now. And that's pretty sad. There are already a bunch of devs complaining about the hardware, and I expect we'll hear more of that as time goes by. I see dire consequences yet again for Nintendo's cheap-ass approach to building a gaming rig. In 2 years' time (or less), 3rd parties won't want to (or won't be able to) develop ports that match their Microsoft and Sony counterparts. And no amount of gimmicky Gamepad utilization will change the minds of hardcore gamers as to which version to get. It will be Wii all over again. The other thing that really pisses me off is their stubborn lack of getting wih the times in terms of network accounts. Sure, you can now create a Nintendo ID, or whatever. Great, but all your games are still locked to the consoles they were purchased on, and not to an account name. This is simply inexcusable in 2012. Leading up to Wii U's launch, I read in multiple places that Nintendo was going to change this, so I happily bought NSMB2, Professor Layton, and Sticker Star digitally. But apparently they lied. Those games are all stuck on my 3DS. Sure, they can be "transfered" to a new system if I get one, but seriously??? Is that really the way this sort of thing should work? Nintendo is stuck in the past and ridiculously stubborn on so many fronts lately, it just really pissed me off. These are just two of my main issues with Wii U, but there are plenty more, that when put together, just add up to me not feeling that "magic" I used to feel with all the previous consoles... it's not a "must have" device. I will get one eventually, because I need to play the next Mario, Zelda and Metroid games, but that is literally all I will ever likely use a console for nowadays... must-play games that aren't available on PC. So it's a bit hard to justify the $300+ asking price for 6-year old technology when the games I really want aren't even out yet. I'm glad you enjoy the console and that's great, but for me... I'm just not feeling it... yet. I wish Nintendo would get with the times and think forward a little bit in terms of technology. The fact that they are selling this old technology for so much is almost criminal. I'll wait a bit and see what happens. Who knows, maybe some "killer app" will come out soon that changes my mind, but I doubt it.

Also, don't craft the weapons you got via achievements. Since those weapons are untradeable, the metal you'd get by crafting them would also be untradeable, and crafting anything with that metal would make the resulting item untradeable, etc... and basically, that's not particularly desirable. I suggest just keeping those achievement weapons and only craft duplicate items you receive from drops.

Great post. I feel exactly the same as you, especially in regards to NSMB2. I am just not 'feeling it'. While technically fine, it doesn't inspire me in any way or compel me to keep playing. It's just the same old stuff in a new package. I just don't get what the point of this game was (and from what I've seen and heard of the new Wii U one, it's sounding like the same deal there)... very sad.

Well, that was a quick turnaround!!! Didn't he say not so long ago that the game was ONLY meant to be played on a couch with a controller, and basically "F#@k Steam!" when asked about a PC port??? Hey, I'm not complaining (because I want it on Steam)... it's just sad that it took this long for him to realize that XBLA was the wrong choice from the start. Steam is a haven for indie developers and the game should have been developed to release there from the start. They sure as hell don't charge $40,000 to patch a game, either, that's for sure. I'm pretty sure there is no cost at all, aside from a review, and you can patch your games as much s you want to (just one of the many up-sides to working with Valve). Anyways, I'm just glad to hear that he may have had a change of heart and hope it does get released soon on other platforms.

You're right about the launch and launch history. I wasn't expecting too much at day one launch honestly, but since they have had so much time to prepare this console, I would have thought there would be more than just one 2D Mario game (I'm just talking first party here) on day one. And when they start talking "launch window" to try and make everyone feel better, I'm not buying it. Reggie just stated in an interview that when they say "launch window" they are really talking about months past launch. I am sorry, but something released 3-4 months after launch shouldn't be using the term "launch" as part of describing its release date. It's just marketing BS.

Anyways, the majority of my disappointment doesn't even have to do with the launch. Honestly I am OK with just a Mario game on day 1. I just would have really liked to have some announcements of additional 'hardcore' games, even if they wouldn't be released until 2013. I just want to know it's going to be more than just a series of mini-game collections and normal games with gimmicks tacked on, like with Wii. So far I'm not seeing it...

As far as 3rd party, I don't really care at all. I have never bought a Nintendo console for 3rd party games. With very few exceptions, there have never been any multi-platform 3rd party games that are better on a Nintendo platform and whenever possible, I always go for PC as my first option anyways. I really only buy Nintendo consoles to play Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Pikmin, etc. 3rd party WiiU-exclusive games might potentially interest me, but as of yet, I don't see any that do, except maybe Rayman Legends (depending on how critical the tablet is to it).

I agree and disagree. I'm also a huge fan of Mario and Pikmin, and a few of the other things you mentioned, but frankly, it's just not enough. They've had years to prepare for this system, and its launch, yet it's only as powerful as other current-gen systems, and all we're getting at launch is NintendoLand and a new Mario game that, while I am sure it will be good, is yet another seemingly cookie-cutter 2D platformer (which will be the 3rd one) in as many years. Aside from Pikmin (which they did not even specify would be at launch), there were no other AAA games aimed for the hardcore that were even mentioned (Metroid, F-zero, whatever... just a mention of anything like that, even if it is a 2013 game, would have been welcome). Instead, all we got was a ton of time wasted on 3rd party games that have either already been released or will just have tacked on 'gamepad'(tm.) gimmicks, and worst of all.... NintendoLand. I'm sorry, but I am sick of Nintendo mini-game collections... and it's not like I haven't given them a chance. I own every single one up to this point. They just do nothing for me anymore. If it comes with the system for free or releases as a $15 download, then OK, fine. But if it's a $50 retail game?... I'm sorry, but just, no. The most embarrassing thing was the time they devoted to explaining in mind-numbing detail the Luigi ghost mini-game. I was honestly feeling sick to my stomach at that point with embarrassment for them. Yeah, WE GOT IT after like 30 seconds... but they went on and on and on about it... and that was the finale of the conference! It was just incredibly underwhelming. They had years to prepare for this, and Sony and Microsoft both had mediocre showings. It was their show to take, but they just fell flat on their face. But sadly, I am not surprised.

Anyways, while I can see where your optimistic viewpoint comes from, I am just finding myself with less and less patience and enthusiasm for Nintendo nowadays... it makes me sad, because like many people, I grew up with them and have been a HUGE fan since the NES (I own every system, tons of handhelds, almost every big 1st party game, etc)... but at this point, I just find myself not every excited for WiiU at all. I am not even sure I will even buy one at this point, which is saying a lot. I guess I'll just wait and see.

PS - what the fuck is Retro Studios working on????? If I knew the answer to that, my whole outlook might change on a dime. The lack of any info on that has been perhaps my biggest disappointment so far...
