Dpad is not a button it's a direction, same reason why there are not an infinite number (or whatever angular resolution of the electronics) of buttons from an analog stick -- 13.
I'd say wrestling games have gotten more complex, still stuck being shit though.
I've had some real bad issues with audio and environment streaming. About 2-3 times the audio will start to stutter and lag, then the environment will just completely stop being rendered. An example is when you're chasing down Carter in Yemen across the rooftops -- it ended up with us running across bright blue polygons in a vast white wasteland.
I completely agree with the OP, there is just something missing from this that the original had. I suppose it was just that AA was such a fresh take on a classic formula with fantastic production values. Arkham City has even better production values, but well, there is so little new here that it just kinda feels stale, I am only a few hours in however (came out today in UK) and as I get used to the glide controls and quick gadget combat, I may warm to it more.
I was hoping this would be an Assassins Creed Brotherhood to AC 2, if you know what I'm saying, but yet to be convinced.
