For example if a game features a PS2 somewhere inside it, then it can have the PS2 object linked to it.

I do not feel that a species appearing as a selectable character in a party/sports game is really enough to justify it being a character, you're just controlling one of the many nameless Bloopers in the Mario universe. This is not quite the same case as Pikachu, who is a clearly defined individual of his race and intrinsic to the story of the Pokemon universe for example.
