Top 5 Worms Games!

Here's the Wikipedia blurb about the series:

Worms is a series of artillery strategy computer games developed by British company Team17. Players control a small platoon of earthworms across a deformable landscape, battling other computer- or player-controlled teams. The games feature bright and humorous cartoon-style animation and a varied arsenal of bizarre weapons.

The game, whose concept was devised by Andy Davidson, was described by the Amiga gaming press as a cross between Cannon Fodder and Lemmings. It is part of a wider genre of turn-based artillery games in which each player controls characters who duel with projectile weapons.

Long loved Worms, but I feel it's best days are behind it. I say behind, but I still play the No 1 game on my list regularly online. C'mon Team 17 I wan't a game to top this list that's not 15 years old! (Worms 5, PC first, hand drawn animation, complex animated parallax scrolling backgrounds, and all the features that have been added to WA!)

List items

  • This game is now 15 years old, but (sorry to say Team 17) it's still the best Worms game by far.

Even in the years after it's initial release, this was the pinnacle of 2D worms. It built on the original game, and tweaked the flaws in Worms 2, but the reason this is still the best after 15 years are the patches that have been released over the last few years.

Team 17 have allowed 2 coders (Deadcode & Cybershadow) to keep updating the game. Adding user requested features and tweaks that have just perfected the game. It will reportedly also include all the features of Worms World Party. The games resolution can now be set far higher than when originally released, making the game look sharp on modern PCs. Map sizes have virtually no limit, allowing for the game to evolve in so many ways that it's creators could not have envisaged. (Checkout my maps on http://www.wmdb.org/users/ohms)

To Team 17's credit the game is still playable online via their servers, and it's never been so much fun. I wonder how Team 17 will ever create a worms game that will lure us WA players away from it. I don't see how, but I kinda hope they succeed one day.

  • The Director's Cut was an enhanced version of the original game by Andy Davidson. The engine, graphics ( with 9 level parallax scrolling!!!) and game play were all perfected.

Features that appeared in Worms 2 made their first appearance here, like the Holy Hand Grenade, Cavern levels and the graffiti style level editor.

Unfortunately it was only made for Amiga systems and despite positive reviews only sold 5,000 copies worldwide.

  • The original Worms already had a winning formula, but with the Reinforcements addon, and the ability to edit the games' soundbanks added a whole new level of customisation.

It may have been bettered by The Directors Cut, but it was still the first, and most widely available version.

    A true classic.

  • The DS seemed an ideal platform for turn based strategy, but the first Open Warfare was lacking. This sequel wasn't. The game is perfectly suited to the dual screen handheld. Vertical levels, new features like magnets and sentry guns, plus online ranked matched were the icing the cake.

  • Well. I've not played it yet.

    Wishful thinking including it here.
