So which console really has the best exclusives?

Let me start by saying that ant 'system wars' stuff is not welcome anywhere, let alone here.  This blog is about the exclusives that each of the consoles offer and the one with the best games will always be the games you like the most - everyone is right, no matter how different their answer is.

Also, I need to add that any errors in my analysis are not intentional, as it took a bit of work to establish what I did, so if you find any errors, by all means let me know.  This does not include any download games, just retail ones.  Also, I did leave out some games like Naruto, where each console has a Naruto game so exclusivity isn't really applicable.  That applies to a few others I can't remember.  Ones that also come to mind are all the singing (Singstar/Lips) and quizz (Buzz/Scene It) games as they are an experience not really exclusive.  Yes, I know that applies elsewhere, but I had to make a line somewhere and that is  the line I chose.   Also, I am ignoring PC, this is just about consoles.

With that out of the way, I though that it might be interesting to have a decent look at which games are exclusive to a console and how that compares.  My expectations were that they would all be worth owning and looking at the results, I believe that I am right.

42 games in total.   I have managed to accumulate 12 of those 360 only games.  I still need to add Tales of Vesperia, Forza 3 and Fable II to my collection.  A pretty decent set of games, but I suspect the most popular ones are the ones I don't care for - Halo and Gears of War.

For some reason Liberty City Stories isn't on Metacritic (the individual DLC is) so that should be on this list.

28 games in total, so quite a bit short of the 360 total.  I am not in possession of a PS3 and to be honest, not a lot of the exclusives are really my kind of game, but a handful look like awesome games that I would be very happy to add to my library - Demon Souls, Disgaea 3, Folklore, LittleBigPlanet and Valkyria Chronicles.  Obviously there will be a lot of love for Unchartered, Resistance and Metal Gear.

Edit: whoops, forgot Ratchet & Clank  :-(

Of course, as expected I would include the Wii exclusives.  Sure, there will be a lot of the usual hate and that would be a pity, but there is clearly a large number of well received games to choose from.  Those who don't enjoy what is on offer are only missing out on the fun.

98 games, but that is not unexpected as the difference to the HD consoles means that many of those made for the Wii won't appear on those HD counterparts.  I have mamaged to accumulate 41 of these games and quite a few more will end up in my collection.

I believe in owning as many consoles as you can afford, but also that any single console can still satisfy your needs if you can't afford more.  The PSWii or Wii360 is clearly a good second choice though as it really does give you the best of most of what is on offer.  As for me though, the 360 still probably pips the PS3 at the post as far as exclusives are concerned, only because of JRPG.  I never thought that would ever be the case.  Don't get your knickers in a twist when I say that the Wii beats both, because it is just a personal view.

Now it is over to you.  With you own tastes, which one is leading the way at this point in time?

Which console has the best games over the holiday season?

Taking a look over the holiday season releases, being between now and March next year (yeah, it is a long season), I thought I would take a detailed look to see which console would be attracting the most interest for me.  True, I have a Wii and 360 only, I decided that taking a look at the PS3 would be a worthwhile exercise to see if it would be worth the while spending $500 on one based on the games that are exclusive.

I have broken the games into 3 groups, being those which I am certain to get, those which interest me enough to see how they come out or get cheaper later and those which I just don't care about.  For the sake of keeping things simple, all games that just look cheap and generic have been ignored.  Here we go:

No Caption Provided

 Must have games:
  1. Harvest Moon: Animal Parade
  2. New Super Mario Bros. Wii
  3. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers
  4. No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle
  5. Arc Rise Fantasia
  6. Fragile: Farewell Ruins of the Moon

Let's see how these turn out & those I will buy cheap later:
  1. A Boy & His Blob  ........................ looks sweet.
  2. Band Hero (also 360 & PS3) ........................ do we have enough band games already?
  3. Chaotic (also 360 & PS3) ....................... no idea, but I like strategy.
  4. LEGO Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues (also 360 & PS3) ............................ I didn't really play the first all that much.
  5. LEGO Rockband ............................. as long as it is compatible with Guitar Hero instruments, then yes, at a price.
  6. Rabbids Go Home ............................. no Rayman means a better game for me.
  7. Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles ..........................  I loved the first and I have a lot of fun with on-rails shooters.
  8. Silent Hill: Shattered Memories ............................ never played one and this may be a good place to start.
  9. LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4 ............................. could this be a good Harry Potter game for a change?
  10. Sakura Wars, So Long My Love ........................ I am intrigued and I love anime.
  11. Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces ............................ this looks very good as an Ace Combat style game.
  12. Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars ............................ not a big fighting game player, but this could be one I like.
  13. Red Steel 2 .................................. this will probably go in the must have list if the wii motion+ stuff works out and it looks brilliant.
  14. Sin & Punishment 2 .............................. another one with much potential.
  15. Trauma Team .............................. I enjoyed the first 2, so I am hopeful that this does something a bit different.
  16. Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing (also 360 & PS3) ............................ I want this to be Mario Kart good, but I am not optimistic.
  17. Lord of teh Rings: Aragon's Quest .............................. as long as it isn't too kiddy, this could be good.

Not interested:
  1. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare ................................  war games don't interest me.
  2. Drawn to Life: Next Chapter .............................  looks too simple.
  3. Jurassic: Lost Island (also 360 & PS3) .......................... I am sure it will be crap.
  4. Naruto Shippuden: Clash of Ninja Revolution 3 ..............................  have the first, don't need any more.
  5. Need For Speed: Nitro ................................   car racing on the Wii?  No thanks.
  6. Shaun White Snowboarding: World Stage ..............................  I want 1080  or a new SSX.
  7. Tony Hawk Ride (also 360 & PS3) .......................... I am over Tony Hawk games.
  8. Guitar Hero: Van Halen .........................  oh lord no, horrible music.
  9. Super Monkey Ball Step & Roll .............................. I am over the monkey stuff, give me a new Billy Hatcher instead.
Conclusion:
6 must have games is pretty good for a single console and some of those in the second list show great potential.  Certainly enough to stop any dust collecting on the Wii.

Must have games:
  1.  Resonance of Fate .......................................... an RPG by Tri-Ace< yes, I am there and my faith in them puts it on my must have list.

Let's see how these turn out & those I will buy cheap later:
Assassin's Creed II .......................... didn't really play much of the first, so more likely a cheap buy much later.
  • Dragon Age: Origins ........................... it is an RPG, so I am interested to see how it plays.
  • Grand Theft Auto Episodes from Liberty City ................................ barely played IV, so it will wait for a very cheap price.
  • Left for Dead 2 ................................. it's banned anyway, but it seems like a cheap game later for me, if it ever gets a release.
  • Splatter House ................................ I know nothing, but the name sounds gruesome enough.
  • Bayonetta ............................ looks and sounds pretty good, so I will keep an eye on this.
  • Dark Void ........................... sci-fi, so maybe it will be good.
  • Divinity II: Ego Draconis .......................... this sounds pretty good and it is an RPG, so one to keep a close eye on.
  • Majesty 2: The Fantasy Kingdom Sim .......................... a strategy game that could be okay, but it kind of looks cheap.
  • Mass Effect 2 .................................. didn't like the first as much as I wanted to, but who knows.
  • Aliens Vs Predator ............................... I want an Aliens game that I enjoy, so here's hoping.
  • Bioshock 2 .............................. I kind of liked the first, but I have problems with FPS, so it is likely to be a cheap game later.
  • Lost Planet 2 .................................. I want this to be good, but am not overly optimistic.      R.U.S.E. ................................... it's an RTS, so I am very interested.  Singularity ................................... maybe this could interest me.
  • Two Worlds 2 .................................. stupid name, but as an RPG, I am hoping it is better than the first.
  • Dead Rising 2 .............................. didn't play the first, but I will keep an open mind.
  • Front Mission Evolved ....................................... I am hopeful that this will be a load of fun.
  • Supreme Commander 2 .................................... more RTS, so I am interested, even though on a home console.
  • Nier ................................ it is a Square-Enix game, so I am looking forward to it.
  • Alpha Protocol ................................. looks potentially appealing to me.

  •  Not interested:
    1. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 .......................... just not interest in war games.
    Rogue Warrior .............................. looks boring.
  • The Saboteur ................................ looks boring.
  • Army of Two: The 40th Day ......................... looks really boring.
  • Darksiders ............................. looks uninteresting.
  • Heist ........................... looks very boring.
  • Champions Online ............................. if it needs online, then I am out.
  • Dante's Inferno ............................... just does nothing for me.
  • Dead to Rights: Retribution ............................... looks boring.
  • Just Cause 2 .............................. not for me.
  • Mafia II ................................ didn't care about the first.
  • Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction ............................. NOT interested.
  • Battlefield: Bad Company 2 ................................. yawn, another war game.
  • Red Dead Redemption ............................. western cowboy game, no thanks.
  • Highlander ................................. not interested in the franchise.
  •
    Conclusion:
Only one must have leaves the 360 RRoD unlikely, but there is ome potential in the 20 games I will consider or buy later.  Too many war, shooter or action games for my taste.

    No Caption Provided

     On the 360 anyway:
    Assassin's Creed II
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
    Dragon Age: Origins
    Splatter House
    Bayonetta
    Dark Void
Star Ocean: The Last Hope International ........................ unless it is really different to the 360 game.
    Aliens Vs. Predator
    Bioshock 2
    Lost Planet 2
    R.U.S.E.
    Singularity
    Two Worlds 2
    Dead Rising 2
    Front Mission Evolved
    Nier
    Resonance of Faith
    Alpha Protocol

    Must have games:
    1. White Knight Chronicles .................................. an RPG that looks stunning.

Let's see how these turn out & those I will buy cheap later:
    1. Heavy Rain .............................. looks good, but not really my thing, but certainly worth a look.
    2. Gran Turismo 5 .................................... I am not paying full price for a racing game, but eventually, I am sure I will have a lot of fun with this.
    3. Last Rebellion ..................................... it is an RPG from Japan, and I know nothing else, but still interested.

    Not interested:
    1. Buzz Quiz World ............................... not interested in the franchise.
    2. God of War Collection .............................. have the first and never played it, plus the PSP game didn't do anything for me, so no.
    3. SingStar Latino ...................................... oh lord NO.
    4. MAG ................................ online action with 256 players?  Not for me i the slightest.

    Conclusion:
Not enough to push me over the line into buying one yet, but it is getting there, one game at a time  ^_^

    In closing:
Most of my gaming fun into the first quarter of next year is still coming fro the Wii and most of my 360 gaming is still in the clearance or price reduced section.

Feel free to critique my observations, but remember this is based on personal tastes and clearly, I am not a shooting kind of gamer.  Also, feel free to let me know what interests you as I am sure we can have a decent conversation about it.

A bushfire outside my front door - early summer?

On what was a lovely Spring evening, we were a little surprised to see a bushfire outside our front door.  The surprise is that it is still spring and we have had nothing but wet weather until a week ago.  The fire was about 100 metres from our house.  Reality is that were not at any serious risk as there was no real wind blowing, to carry any embers or push the fire.  No idea how it started, but I am guessing a burn-off gone wrong.  It was contained pretty quickly and oddly enough, it was right behind out volunteer fire station.

I hope this won't be a bad fire year.  Here are some shots:
This shot will give you some perspective of what I am talking about.  This is how you see my house from the mountain behind us at 1200 metres.  You can see the patch that went up is right next to my house.

We had a major bushfire on the mountain about 2 years ago that took helicopters 3 days to put out, so this one is a little one.

816 games and counting! Today, I did a stocktake of my life ^_^

I had some free time on my hands yesterday and decided to do a full stocktake of my games collection.  Yes, I was that bored.  You have all seen the picture before, but I put this photo in again for context, to go with the full collection of the games.  Keep in mind, I have daughters and a lot of the 'cartoon/movie' games were bought when they were a great deal younger.  I don't get rid of games.  They just sit in the library with everything else.

For the record, my current collection now spans 816 games, although some are duplicates, but not many (some for multiplayer, others bought with a bunch of games as a lot).  I figure I should review the collection.  One game a day - I should be finished in 3 years  ^-^  I won't be doing that.

The vast majority of the games have been collected since 2001 when  the gaming bug really took hold, even though I have been gaming since 1975.  Not a single game has ever been bought at full price.  I am happy to wait for a price reduction and clearance.

I usually add about 50 games a year to my collection, so 1,000 isn't too far away  ^-^

Proof that old school gamers never die - they just geekier.

Many of you know my birthday went from the "shittiest birthday ever" thread.  Well, with that out of the way, I got the real birthday fun this evening, with present time.  Just to show how much of a geek I am, here is what my family gave to me.  They know me well:

My games related t-shirts is out of control man.  I already have so many, especially Nintendo ones.   I have my DSi connected to the internet and still trying to figure it all out.  I have managed to download Flipnote, which seems awesome.  Now I need to download the internet browser and look for a couple of games.

Look closely fellow geeks, that is you in those photographs in 20-30 years time.  Change your ways now before it is too late  ^_^

Possibly my shittiest birthday ever - literally.

Tomorrow I have a birthday.  The good news, I am getting a DSi.  However, this isn't looking like a good birthday though.  There is nothing bad as such, so prepare and feel free to laugh at my expense  ^_^

I am taking the day off work.  Good idea, birthday, no work.  Not really.  Our sceptic tank has backed up and is on the precipice of entering our house.  At this stage, there is some overflow in the 2 vents outside the house.  Nothing solid, but not a good smell.  So have it pumped out you say?  Oh, how I wish it were that easy.

You see, as usual, the tank is underground.  Trouble is, it is completely underground, including the opening where it would pumped.  Now, I am talking all of it underground and no plan or marker that tells me where the opening is.  This means I have to keep digging holes until I find it!  Get  earth moving equipment you say?  Yes, if I want to risk damaging the entire system and the massive cost that goes with it.  No, I have to dig holes.

I got home from work today to find my neighbour had already dug several holes, all to no avail.  Keep in mind, it is winter here and very cold and raining.  The rain may be at the heart of the problem as we have had an extremely wet 6 weeks with rain more often than not.  In fact, we are in flood again.  So, there I am, in mud, near freezing conditions and soaked, digging a trench.

Good news though.  I did find the sewer pipe from the house.  Now, my task tomorrow is to follow that pipe.  It is about 18" down, but I have no idea how far or direction.  Based on some local knowledge, I think I will be digging about 4 metres of trench to follow it to the final destination.

So yes, my birthday is shitty  :-(    Added to this, I do have a condition that when I am pushed to hard physically, I suffer low blood pressure and a racing heart.  I nearly fainted digging the holes I have already done.  It won't kill me, but it can slow me up.  Lucky though, all the rain has made the ground softer.  Hey, we have to find the sunshine where we can  ^_^

Stop laughing at my pain.  That's just mean.

So why should I buy a PS3? - my subjective look at the library.

Now that the price of the PS3 has dropped, and whilst it is still too expensive in my opinion, I thought I would do an analysis of the library and see how close the games were getting to drawing me in.  So, it was off to Metacritic and a look through the entire list.  This is how I see it.

A+ games - those that I would absolutely have to have:

    1.  Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice (what a great series)
    2.  Valkyria Chronicles (looks awesome)
    3.  Demon Souls (also looks awesome)

A games that I will certainly want, but could wait quite a while for a price drop:
    1. Civilisation Revolution (I can get that on the 360 anyway)
    2. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (I can just get that on the 360)
    3. Folklore (seems interesting enough)
    4. Little Big Planet (looks like fun)
    5. Resident Evil 5 (I can just get it on the 360)

With just 3 must have games for me at this, despite the fact that they look awesome, and 2 more exclusive games that I want, apart from the cost of the system being too high, there needs to be more games I love before I start some serious consideration.  However, it was a good exercise for me as I consider myself better educated for it.  My 360 is still giving me enough HD gaming it seems.

Bioshock and Nine Inch Nails: Closer video clip - feel the same?

I was recording some video clips that make up the Triple J 100 Hottest Songs of All Time and there was Nine Inch Nails, Closer, at 50 something. Now, I confess to be a fan of NIN and in particular, this song and film clip. As videos go, it would probably be the best video clip of all time.  Having only recently played Bioshock and not having seen the video of Closer for a while, it immediately struck me how much Bioshock "felt' like Closer.

Yes, I realise that they are both copying a architectural style from long ago, but it is more than the basic mechanics.  It is the colour, the graininess of the film and, well, just more - it is hard to describe a feeling.

Warning: Video has adult content (the good stuff).

So a question for players of Bioshock.  Is it just me or do you get the same vibe when you are watching the video clip?  Watching it made me want to play Bioshock  :-)

Music I love, that I feel never got any appreciation.

This is not a video clip -  just audio to a static image (?).  The song is epic and runs for 9 minutes.  !!! are a New York band I think and massively funky, in my view.

Metronomy are an indie garage electronica act from England (the singer is a major producer for pop singers though).  This song is one of my favourites of all time.  I love that bass line and the weirdness of the lyrical style is fantastic.  It reminds me of early Talking Heads and B52's in the feel, not so much the music.

Butterfingers is one strange dude.  His lyrics are a little odd and I love him for it.  I really dig the end of the song as well.

Good old Machine Gun Fellatio  :-)  They are awesome.  This is a song unlike anything I have heard in contemporary music.

Bliss N Eso do hip hop Australian style and do it very well.  I love the sampled grooves and the attitude.  They are excellent at what they do.

I have pretty much always been an alternative music fan since the late 70s when I got into punk.  I only listen to an alternative youth radio station for my music fix and I am constantly delighted by what I hear.  I mention bands like these to my friends and they stare blankly -their loss.  So what do you think of some of oldschools under appreciated picks?

Nintendo has won this generation well beyond console sales.

Why Nintendo not only won this generation for console sales, but why it won much, much more.

    No Caption Provided
It is clearly obvious to all and sundry that this generation is over.  It has been won.  There is virtually zero chance that either the PS3 or 360 will capture enough market share to catch the Nintendo Wii.  But, there is more to the story as to why Nintendo has won this generation, besides the sales.

What the hell is this motion crap?
When Nintendo came out with the Wiimote, they were not taken seriously by the gaming 'purists'.  In fact they were outright ridiculed.  "A toy" they cried.  "It will never catch on" they continued.  Along with the jokes about the name of the console, they futher attempted to marginalise the Wii.

Sony were a little concerned about the possibility of the Wii catching on with its motion controller.  They quickly dumped their Batterang controller and even more quickly, added motion control.  Monkey see - momkey do.

The Wii is not a competitor to the PS3 & Wii.
So many times it was told - the Wii is not in competition with the bigger and better HD consoles.  Of course, this was the catch-cry when it became obvious that the Wii was becoming a sales sensation.  Microsoft would boast that they were winning theconsole sales as the Wii didn't really count.

Then there was the constant cry of "fad" and how that fad would suddenly die.  In fact, they held on to that mantra for quite a while, but it seems to have disappeared from the vocabulary.

    Sales apparently equal profit.
As it became painfully obvious to all, the Wii was commanding massive sales, not just of its console, but the games as well.  With both Microsoft and Sony losing money on their consoles, their respective marketing strategies had to be revisited.  That casual market had to be syphoned a little in their direction.

Microsoft kicked in with their much cheaper Arcade console.  Surely the Wii sold more because it was cheaper?  Make the 360 cheaper than the Wii, throw in some Lips and Scene It and surely gamers would choose a HD 360?  Apparently not.  So console cost wasn't the problem it seems.

Sony just pushed Singstar and hoped for the best.  It didn't work.

    Motion control is the future.
This is where Nintendo wins far more than the console sales race.  When Microsoft showed us Natal and Sony kicked in with Ball-in-a-cup, they had given up - total capitulation.  Yet again Nintendo had shown the way, only to be followed.  No longer were Nintendo and their little Wii not a competitior, they were THE competitor and had to be beaten at their own game.

Even more remarkable is the fanbiy types who constantly derided the Wiimote and clung tightly to their traditional controller (which owes everything to Nintendo as well) like a fat cop holds on to his doughnut.  They now talk about the possibilities that this technology will bring to their respective consoles.  With rose tinted glasses firmly embedded on their faces, they truly espouse the theory that it could work with hardcore games.  Truly a remarkable quantum leap.  Will they accept and acknowledge that Nintendo got it right?  Not likely.  No, Nintendo screwed it all up apparently and that is why Microdoft and Sony must come in and do it right.

If Nintendo had failed in its marketing, then none of this would be happening.  It is the only reason for the change.  It shows the value and absolutely critical nature of needing a strong and innovative 3rd player in the market.  Without Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony would cause the games market to wither and die on the vine.

This catch-up is all about positioning for the next generation.
Forget this generation.  It is all over.  Sony may or may not have a better motion controller.  What does it matter?  How will they market it?  How much will it cost?  It is an additional peripheral, so it has be marketed accordingly.  What exactly is Sony's demographic now?  They are very expensive and many, many parents have already settled for a Wii as a family console.  Can Sony get the price low enough to be appealing to the right demographic?

So many questions and all open to what the market will do and react to any Sony marketing push.

What of price though?  Sony are already making a loss on each console.  In a recession, can they risk a bigger loss?  Even if they do, Nintendo make a profit on every console and have a much greater margin for a significant price reduction if they choose.  This will negate anything Sony try.  Who is to also say that Nintendo don't release a HD Wii upgrade next year and level the playing field?  I doubt that myself.

As for Microsoft, they have delivered a very good Eyetoy it seems.  How will they market it?  No controller at all comes with may limitations in gaming.  Sure, it would work in party games, but what about a serious game?  Who really wants to be pretending to be a soldier in COD 5?  Are you going to set up the loungeroom to pretend you are 5  again, playing war games?  I doubt it.  This has problems written all over it.  It is all good and stuff to have the technology, but how you apply it matters.

One last factor is the Nintendo Magic factor.  They make great games and have brilliant and recognised characters.  People want them.  they love them.  It isn't just the Wiimote selling the Wii, it is the classic franchises.  Sony and Microsoft will have difficulty pushing their own characters.  Maybe Halo Kart and Metal Gear Party would sell, but I kind of doubt it.

This is all about positioning as I said.  They are clearing the decks making room for their consoles to be motion controllable out of the box and marketed that way from the beginning.  Of course, the marketing will look familiar.  After all, Nintendo did it.

The world thanks Nintendo, even if the haters won't.

All comments here are simply my opinion.  They are based on a lifelong gaming habit that dates back to 1974.  If you don't agree, that is your right - it isn't personal.
