Year in Finished Games: 2018

My goals for this year are to play longer JRPGs from the PS2/PS3 generation, complete my Wii U backlog, and translate my way through one Japanese game from the SNES era.

List items

  • Finished January 2018: This has been in my 3DS for at least 10 months, I tried finishing it up in December but didn't quite make it. For my first Etrian Odyssey I really enjoyed it. I know the mainline EO games don't have story, but I actually enjoyed the plot to this. I have EO4, EO5, EOU:2, and Persona Q in my backlog. Not sure which one to play next.

  • Finished January 2018: I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this game and I'm a little sad I finished it. I don't play many visual novels, but I enjoyed this one. I was skeptical coming into this game because I was really disappointed with a similar game, 2064: Read Only Memories. Everything 2064 did wrong VA-11 Hall-A did right. The cyberpunk future felt realized and characters were likable. I grew really attached to the main protagonist Jill and all the characters in the game.

  • Finished February 2018. I had an itch for a base building game so I gave Subnautica a try when it launched. I finished it in 50 hours and came away conflicted. I wanted to see it through, but the story wasn't that great and the last few hours were difficult to get through. The deepest reaches of the ocean were annoying to navigate. Features such as better lighting upgrades for your ship or an in-game map would have helped me enjoy traversal a lot more.

  • Finished March 2018. Wow, I can't believe how much I loved this broken, unfinished mess of a game. Nothing about this game should have worked from the Nomura infused characters to the unfinished story to the janky controls but I really enjoyed playing this game and I can't stop thinking about it. The final campfire scene was the most emotional I've been playing a game. I finished all the DLC (excluding the Comrades multiplayer add-on) and can't wait for more from this universe.

  • Finished June 2018. I am making my way through the Sega Genesis Classics Collection. I've never played Gunstar Heroes and was impressed. Controls weren't as tight as Contra, but the art and level design are great.

  • Finished June 2018. Everything Amanita puts out is amazing. Great art, humor, and music. The game doesn't have as many puzzles, but it was still a joy to play.

  • Finished June 2018. At the 75 hour mark, I still wanted to grind for support conversations but decided to fight the last boss. I was really impressed with the localization. It was funny and endearing. I prefer Matsuno style Tactics games more than Fire Emblem, but I enjoyed playing it. If I didn't have an infinite backlog, I would keep going.

  • Finished August 2018. I got interested in Final Fantasy XIV after watching Danny's Noclip documentary on the death and rebirth of the game. It humanized SquareEnix in a way I didn't think possible. I really enjoyed the main story line. It's a shame your warrior of light doesn't talk or emote during cut scenes, but otherwise it felt like a mainline Final Fantasy more than an MMO. A Realm Reborn ends on a really strong note. I am going to let my subscription lapse for a month or so before I pick it back up to play Heavensward and Stormblood.

  • Finished September 2018. Not sure I'd count this as finished, but I beat the game with all 3 classes and I needed to move on because I was way too hooked on the game. I always wanted to get into a run based game like Binding of Isaac, but the aesthetic of Isaac turned me off. Slay the Spire has the same appeal, but is less gross.

  • Finished November 2018: I wanted to give visual novels a chance in between games so I started with one of the most highly regarded. Despite the slow start I really enjoyed Steins;Gate, really touching ending. I had no idea it would take me 40+ hours to complete.

  • Finished December 2018: Sadly I had more fun with the faerie management portion of Glittermitten Grove than the Frog Fractions 2 game hidden within. I was expecting a fun collection of minigames like the original Frog Fractions, but the Adventure-like nature of TXT World dragged on too long. Navigating around objects with your sword constantly colliding against walls made snaking around the screen a chore. The minigames often dragged beyond the joke being funny. Shaving Obama was funny for a few minutes but you do it over and over again until the joke is played out. Finishing it was satisfying. Not sure if there was more after the credits, but I was ready to call it done.

  • Finished December 2018: Played through REROLLED over Christmas Break. I remember playing the PS2 release over Christmas in 2004 and it blew me away. REROLL sadly doesn't add much beyond updated visuals. Considering the cost I was hoping for more.

  • Finished December 2018: Took some time off from FF14 but came back and crunched through the Heavensward content up until Dragonsong War patches. I'm counting this as completed because I hit credits. Story-wise this has been the best FF14 story line yet. A lot of nice parallels between this and Final Fantasy Tactics with a corrupt theocracy at the center of the plot. I hit level cap with my scholar might level up another job before continuing the story.
