@alex I highly recommend tapping rmb to aim down sights when shooting at someone unless they're literally in your face. It makes you MUCH more accurate. Also standing still while shooting, even when being shot at, is preferable to moving, as it also affects accuracy a lot. That's counterintuitive but it helps you kill people before they kill you.
Dan starts by fixing the metagame and making smart choices, then promptly plays the mission in an impressively terrible fashion by putting units completely out of cover, or in flanked positions, and forgetting that run and gun exists at the most crucial moments.
All in all, very impressive stuff! I love and hate this feature.
Yeah not assigning research is literally throwing away free progress. It costs nothing to do and it advances while you do the scanning parts. Don't neglect the metagame.
For the sake of wanting this feature to last longer than 7 episodes: PLEASE learn the rules of flanking, at least. Don't leave yourself exposed (out of cover) in the direction where the enemies are.
Also, never ever ever ever move your guys into a position with zero cover at all. Any movement by another squad mate could reveal enemies who then have a perfect shot on you. Just never do it. Ever.
What fun would this be?
Don't get me wrong, I want them all to die! Just not quite so soon. Not like they're going to survive Mutons or Chryssalids anyway.

Honest question: if you're going to go out of your way to ignore everything going on in the game, why do this feature? Is that comedy? Am I old?
Yes it is and yes you are
No it isn't and no he isn't.
I mean the first part is subjective I guess, but he is definitely old. I happen to know for a fact that oni has been alive for 72 years. This is the truth.
