Not much to add in the kpop department but a few weeks back Frederic came out with a new song which I think is off a mini album that they created this year. It is getting a lot of air time as it is an opening song to a big ish anime happening right now and I am happy that Frederic is getting introduced to a larger audience.

As an aside, I want to thank @wemibelle for introducing me to FEMM from this thread and I was lucky enough to spot them for some reason do a very intimate show in London a couple months back. They are awesome live and if anyone has the chance I thoroughly suggest they give it a go! (At the start of the set they have a couple of roadies carry them out like actual mannequinns which was a silly little neat touch).

Long time no post again. It is not because Kpop releases have slowed down because.... they have not at all. While we have had some recent notable depatures it seems like the Kpop world main names want to continue releasing stuff while they can.

What If - San E : Starting off with the latest release and the last artist Wemibelle listed San E has a really great type of sound to his name, I am not sure if he produces his own sound but I am sure he collaborates with the same person most of the time. His music video is colourful as always and is fun to listen to.

Kiss On The Lips - MelodyDay : A much slower song to fit in with the season this song is alright but does not hit me in the way I am searching the kpop threads for. It still is a nice tropical themed video even though clearly recorded in some studio.

Crazy - Skull feat. VerbalJint, KittiB : Speaking of tropical themes I really love anything coming out from Skull. Their summery vibes always catch me even in a downtempo song like this. This track also has some big featured names that I feel were underutilized. Still I really like this song and it would probably get played quite a few more times until summer.

Knock Knock - TWICE : Yes, TWICE continue to release mega song after mega song. I really like this songs cute nature and feel it is a pretty decent song audibly as well. It has grown on me a lot (especially that stop motion intro and J.Y. Parks cameo). I will also probably be listening to this a few times.

I Got Love - Taeyeon : Taeyeon continues to be releasing songs with great fanfare and I think this is good as personally I think she has a great voice. Sadly this song doesn't work for me, it seems too barebones and somewhat slow but I can totally understand its appeal to others.

Dont Recall - K.A.R.D. : Another group that has been pushing out new songs lately that I am interested in. KARD are one of the rare bands that have ladies and guys together which creates a good sound and can only help the choreography (as well as attempting to mesh that gendered fanbases together). I look forward to seeing future songs from them.

Not Today - BTS : Not satisfied with the absolute monster year they had in 2016 BTS are back to steal more hearts. Another super well produced music video this song follows in similar nature to Fire in that it has more of a club banger type feel. On first and second listen it is not quite clicking with me but being a dumb BTS fan im sure I will fall in love with it eventually. Going to a BTS concert nowadays you can probably expect the hottest 40 or so minutes of music and well done to these boys.

Rookie - Red Velvet : Remember when I said all the major groups are releasing music? Red Velvet are also taking their shot at ignoring winter and producing this super fun colourful song. This might be my favourite song of the list but it took a few listens to grow on me. I am an absolute sucker for well done wordplay like the stuff featured in this chorus (I am pretty sure they know and are fully playing into the whole stereotype of Asian people having trouble separating L in an R word and using that)

Figured I could update this with some new Jpop I have been listening to lately and it is entirely because of anime. I only really have one band to highlight called Radwimps.

Yes being a big anime fan I had to go watch Kimi No Na Wa (Your Name) at the cinema because I am lucky and in the UK and it was showing and felt that the music in the actual anime was really really well done and fit quite well

Yume Tourou - RadWimps = The opening song, this song has a nice uptempo rocky style of song which I like a lot and opens up the film well. Also has a very minor but fun clap section and I love clap sections.

Nandemonaiya - RadWimps (video might contain spoilers) = Can't quite remember where this was played but a really nice piano based song

Sparkle - RadWimps = End song or near enough the end/credits section this song hits at a really nice emotional point in the film, it really fits the film well and has a really beatiful sound to it.

I know these songs aren't the latest but given that anime film is making massive waves in Asia and the West these songs by default are getting tons of interest.

A new year and new kpop has been gifted to us. And boy so much of it already. It seems as if the kpop machine refuses to quit and accept it is winter ballad season.

Reason - Spacecowboy = This is a sort of club banger type track with possibly one of the longest build ups I have heard. Think of this song playing at 1am and you are drunk and this might fit right in.

Mysterious - HELLOVENUS = HelloVenus are back and seem to have completely removed their more adult risque style for a vibrant and cutesy song. I like the whistling

I think I Love U - Sonamoo = I think this song is a continuation from I like u too much with the title? It features Sonamoo doing Sonamoo things with decent dancing and a fun catchy song.

I Wish - WJSN (Cosmic Girls) = I am not really a cosmic girls fan but they are somewhat big so here is a link to their latest song. I will give it credit the video does look super nice.

She - TopSecret = A boyband here with a nice uptempo style song which seems alright. I have not given them a thorough listen but I am sure that is the same tennis court that I.O.I used for dream girls (I listened to dream girls more than this song).

April Story - April = Another popularity deal here, April do seem big so I should post that they have a song out now. April read the memo and this is winter ballad season but they went for a more active type of ballad song which works well. I also like this video.

Rainbow - Ina = Ina ignored the ballad message and decided a cutesy song was in order instead. I can't tell if i like or hate that chorus sampled bit but overall I do like this song.

Paradise - S.E.S. = A new name for me from SMTown. It seems like an alright song to me but it is not hooking me in any way.

Up & Down (Chinese version - EXID = Ok ok ok this is a Chinese version of a song that is two years old but damnnnn that video (also I really like how the lyrics sound in Chinese). Here is to hoping EXID have another great album lined up for us.

Bing Bing - AOA = A hot group with a new album AOA are back!. It seems like this might be their lead song which has a real nice classy sort of feel (Jimin has long hair now!!!!!)

Excuse me - AOA = However it is this song from their latest album that I prefer. The smoother tone to the beat and the video seem better produced in a fun 60s sort of setting. Im not sure if that lead dance in the chorus is either terrible or goes all the way around to be cutesy great.

Lets hope 2017 keeps up this pace

I haven't posted in a while and part of that is due to not finding enough new kpop (there actually is quite a lot out again but it is mostly ballads) and mostly due to myself focusing on my top 10 of the year which this post will cover.

This is an extension of what I aimed to do every year and usually I would declare my summer banger of X year, I forgot to do that this year so this list will also incorporate that.

First off I will declare that 2016 had so many songs that I enjoyed and it was hard for me to find a 25 song limit, but the hardest part of this process was actually finding the top 10, so without further ado, here is the best of the rest, the 15 or so who could not make it to the top 10. I will list them as I feel like they still deserve some form of mention, some more than others (Note some of these may be vevo links which might not work in your country). AOA - Give me the love, GAIN - Carnival, CocoSori - Exquisite, Bulldok - Why not, Oh My Girl - Liar liar, Wonder Girls - Why so lonely, Kitti B & Jace - So Busy, Dynamic duo - High five, Sistar - I like that, Hyuna - Morning glory, Stellar - Sting, Laboum - Shooting love, EXID - LIE, Oh My Girl - A-ing, Luna - Free somebody, Mamamoo - 1cm, TWICE - Cheer up. Special note goes to Hitchiker - $10 for an amazing song video that I couldn't put in my top 10, but it was close.

My actual top 10 will feature video links as well as short paragraphs as to why I felt they deserved those spots to beat all of the great songs listed above.

10. Tymee - Cinderella

Loading Video...

Arguably one of the least listened to songs in my top 10, but I have a real strong love for this song. What makes this song stand out to me from the other K-rap songs on my list is the juxtaposition between the pretty lady and the super style that this song oozes, not to mention that the entire song is generally just great k-rap. The black and white with specialized colouring in certain places is great and the sampled beat works really well for me (not to mention her deeper than expected vocal ability).

9. Skull & Haha - Dont Laugh

Loading Video...

At first I laughed, Korean reggae, it was a fun time when I found this song. Then this summer banger grew on me in a big way. The relaxed fun flow of this song is super easy to listen to and is a bonafide top 5 summer banger of 2016. The video is passable and could completely be ignored but the song in this one is what pushes this to 9th place.

8. Heize feat. Dean & DJ Friz - And July

Loading Video...

Heize came out with a few good songs this year but this easily is the best of them all. With an amazing break sample the song already starts off strong and using Heizes great vocals it expands it further. Having Dean (who featured on other songs) on this song adds to it further and the video has a fun story of a couple who prank each other to the most extremes. Make no mistake, the main draw of this song for me is the hip hop sample but it has been worked by everyone involved into a very fun listen.

7. I.O.I - Very Very Very

Loading Video...

What happens when you mix a big k-pop idol group with a generic drum and bass breakbeat? An extremely cute, fun and hype song. The video is somewhat fun without being too generic and musically this song does not really do much different to the first 30 seconds. But MAN, that 30 seconds is great, from the extreme hype of the beat, the fun build ups that occur throughout the song and the chorus that I can’t get enough of (from someone who can’t speak Korean) which sounds like they are just repeating the same word over and over again. This song is infectious as hell and it infected me in a big way this year.

6. BTS - Save Me

Loading Video...

This was early in the year so it had not quite hit summer yet but in stead what came from BTS with this release was a great emotional style song. The video is different from most BTS songs which is set outdoors and while kind of focuses on their dancing, also focuses on mixing themes with the actual song. I don’t usually fall for these types of emotional songs, but this one really stuck with me. The chorus is great, the lyrics are pretty nice and I very much enjoy this song musically. Summer banger, this is not, but this song has a perfect place with me when I may not be looking for those uptempo songs and want to be a bit more moody, which has been a strong theme for 2016.

5. Red Velvet - Russian Roulette

Loading Video...

My first introduction to Red Velvet was with Dumb Dumb, and this song is extremely similar in infectious catchy k-pop-ness. Not to say thats a bad thing as it is superbly fun infectiously, catchy k-popness. I can’t really quite say why I like this song so much, in part, the music is fun and happy to listen to, the video has a superbly clean style to it and the video is very fun. Even the dancing to this song is polished and incredibly well done. Nothing extremely stands out with this song but as a complete product it is finely tuned to be one of my favourite songs of the year as I cannot help but keep coming back to it.

4. Rainbow - Whoo

Loading Video...

Another song that hit early in the year, another song which stuck with me the whole time and sadly is incredibly underrated. Sure this has a very generic setup to a kpop song but I have fallen for it hook, line and sinker. I think most of my enjoyment comes from it's 80s audio stylings with it's use of electric guitar, it's breakdowns (featuring a clapped breakdown!) and it's relaxed chorus. This is definitely one of my summer bangers of this year. Clap Clap!

3. Mamamoo - You're The Best

Loading Video...

As a self confessed big Mamamoo fan almost every song they released this year was super fun for me (1cm was definitely up there) but this was the song that stuck with me the most. Using an incredibly cute video this group created one of my favourite summer bangers of this year. Biggest highlight for me comes from the chorus dance moves as they just seem like the funnest thing to perform. I like Mamamoo for each performer in the group having very unique vocal abilities as well as generally having an air of they just want to have fun when performing more than anything. With a fun video, great vocals from everyone in the group and a fun beat that you want to bounce to, this song makes it to third on my list.

2. BTS - Fire

Loading Video...

These two places were the toughest for me to figure out. Both are incredible summer bangers to me and involve a ton of hype. In fact this song is my number one summer banger of 2016, and yet it is in second place here.

First of all, this song is an absolute banger, from the dance moves within the song, to the absolute hype beat that is shown throughout the song. This song from start to finish makes me want to just jump out of my seat and bop around foolishly trying to recreate the dance moves that those pros can only master. Whether in a club, in the car or just in your room this song works well. Now to why it is second, personally it is pretty one note with it's lyrics, it doesn’t quite hook me with the breakdown or the end section (even though the dancing is still top notch) not to mention the video around the dancing is pretty generic. The only theme to it is Fire and hype and Fire and hype. This worked the best when they performed the song at the Melon Music Awards this year with personally, the best live performance I have seen of 2016 in Kpop.

1. Kisum - No Jam

Loading Video...

I should preface this with me saying that I am a massive Kisum fan. With that out of the way Kisum came back this year and had a new mini album with this summer banger on it. While it is not my 2016 summer banger of the year, this is my number 1 kpop song of the year. This is not just because I am a massive Kisum fan over a BTS fan. This is because I think as a complete package this song is better than BTS - Fire.

What attracts me to Kisum is her mix of really fun and cute beats and lyrical themes with her ability to be one of the best rhymers in krap. This song leans heavily into the more cuter and fun style of songs. Like Fire, I cannot help but tap my foot to this and want to get up and boogie to it. Where this song excels is not only does it combine an extremely fun hype beat with a cute video, it has an incredibly fun theme of doing what is fun and feels fun to you in the moment. I think it tries to capture the early 20s life of just having fun for funs sake, and right now in this world, sometimes we just need that. Kisum also excels over BTS throughout the song lyrically whereas Fire does have some lull moments, No Jam is a constant fun groove for 3 minutes of bouncy party music. As simply as I can put it, Fire is something which you want to tear up a club dance floor with, No Jam is something you want to party with your friends and have a good time with.

I wrote most of this while pretty drunk so some of it may be pretty repetitive or not make sense but I hope I was able to express how I was able to order all of these songs for 2016. 2016 was a great year for Kpop and while some new bands have been created (Twice, Blackpink etc.) some have gone on hiatus so 2017 will be a very interesting year. The best I can ask for is a new Primary album.

Im not sure what car in BC you use to take your tests but heres a fun shitty tale that I had to endure for the last three weeks.

Learning to drive with AA in the UK means you can use your instructors car for the test taking, so I had got used to it. Fun thing is it was a nice engined Ford Fiesta that didn't weigh anything. So once I finally pass I am testing used cars to buy one and can't help but stall every time im moving off from stationary position.

Turns out driving instructors in the UK if they have those kinds of cars they just get lazy and tell you to just use the clutch to get you going, and in a small car like that it works almost all the time. I had to do my own research and have my parents shout at me saying use some accelerator pedal when going you dummy.

It's crazy because this story is not such a rare thing in the UK and could probably explain why a lot of young drivers get into accidents early. Even people who are meant to teach you how to drive can totally mess your driving style up so I dunno, just practice and confidence

I passed on my second test, but had something like 15-20 hours of driving lessons before i did my first test. Part of that is because the UK has some stupid 8+ weeks waiting time for doing your test but mostly it was because I was not confident.

Take your time with it but I know half of my friends are terrible drivers and a few of them have tried 5 times already and failed. Also even though I have passed recently and obtained a car, I am still going out every couple nights to do more practice, I would suggest you just keep practicing at it.

I think 2 things helped me pass my test. I started learning when I was 25 and I feel a hell of a lot more mature and observant of the road in my current age than say 7 or so years ago. Most importantly I like to cycle around as much as possible so cycling on the road has made me both crucially observant of the behaviour of cars (and their drivers) and how to predict traffic will flow and the right procedure (so as not to get killed).

I still take the bus to work each day. It takes about the same time, is slightly cheaper when I take gas money into consideration AND i get to spend that time playing video games/watching trash on my phone. I find public transport wholly better than driving my lonesome self somewhere.

Long time, no post, I took a big break from Kpop for a while and while there is not too much appearing that is new in my eyes, the stuff that is coming out is coming from some of the more well known groups.

Decalcomanie - Mamamoo : New Mamamoo! I have enjoyed this group through the whole year and it is interesting they have been super active the whole year able to release two albums. This song pulls from their strength of singing with a classy atmosphere in the music video with a great verse from Moonbyul.

Why Not - Bulldok : A new group with their debut lead song it is not a bad start from the group. Definitely aimed at being a club style song but has good sections throughout including their second lady rapper.

You bad! Don't make me cry - Matilda : A really weird mix which starts as a downbeat almost reggae based song but then very quickly turns into a generic club style backbeat. The group themselves are not bad but it is nothing special either.

Paradise - Hyolyn : Sistar lady Hyolyn appears to have dont some effort into making a solo side push and it starts with some decent vocal ability and follows a Hyuna styled sexual attempt with Sistar like bright themed colours. Another song called One step with Jay Park was also released.

Blood Sweat & Tears - BTS : My last post I listed some teaser type MV and this is the lead song from that teased album. Quite a difference the seasons make, from a hot banger Fire the Autumn period highlights a very downbeat housey style club song which definitely highlights their dancing skills.

TT - TWICE : Same deal, A surprise to me, the super hot girl group TWICE also kept very busy this year and released another mini album with this lead single that is halloween themed (it gives then a simple excuse for each member to dress up again). The song it self ramps up as it goes but doesn't reach the peaks the other two lead songs had.

Playing With Fire - BLACKPINK : The other lady group to rival TWICEs hot fire release is Blackpink and they also released two new songs. Playing with fire is better than the other to me which features more focus on their singing and a very club like feel to the song. Stay, the other song, is much more of a ballad and I am not really into Kpop for those.

Very Very Very - I.O.I. : OK, I saved the best for last. I initially wrote off IOIs latest mini album with Whatta man, but ohboy this song is extremely infectious with its super cute music video and repetitive but extremely fun chorus and song structure. All that combined with a high bpm styled backing track makes this one of my favourite songs within the last couple months.
