My Top 3 Backseat Gaming Games Of 2022

Like I noted in my 2020 list, my husband plays a lot of video games. I tell him to. As a result, I end up watching him play a lot of video games. This year, however, we had the added complication of a brand new baby. This means that while there was lots of time for me to watch him play games while the baby napped on me (she is a hardcore Velcro baby) the fact that we're exhausted from this whole parenting things means we usually just turned on Bluey or the Dick Van Dyke Show so we could check our phones during the silence.

As a result, there were fewer games than previous years, or there were games that I wasn't around for a lot of. So, the following list contains the video games that he played that were the most fun, for me, to watch, but with some modified criteria. The criteria for this list is:

  • the game must have come out in 2022 (so Destiny 2 or Fortnite won't be on this list);
  • I must not have played it with him (so no Pentiment, Hobb's Barrow, or Immortality).
  • I don't have to have been there for the whole, or even majority of the game.

List is ranked with my most favourite at the end. Enjoy!

  • This game is so much fun to watch, with the added benefit of not missing much if I'm not looking at the screen. I don't think Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy has ever been so moving. What a majestic instrument. Toots for everyone.

  • I have played a lot of this. No, really, so much Snap. I play it with the sound off because I play it while the baby is sleeping, so I don't know what any of the cards say or sound like. I love this game (mostly because I'm actually pretty good at it). I have played about 3x more of this game than my husband, but it's on this list of backseat gaming because he and I trade screenshots of our wins (or epic losses) frequently. It's also a prime example of my being much more lucky at mobile games than my husband, mostly due to the cards I unlock.

  • This was my favourite game to watch him play this year. It's snappy, flashy, the story is good, the characters are fun, and it's just the right amount of anxiety watching him try to get Ace Medals. Even when he repeats the same level for 15 minutes, I still have a lot of fun with it.
